A Wi-Fi soundbar can stream music, join a multiroom system, accept app control, and sometimes connect wirelessly to rear speakers. It does not usually mean a completely cable-free TV setup: the soundbar still normally connects to the television through HDMI ARC or eARC, while the subwoofer and rear speakers still need power.
For most buyers, the Samsung HW-Q990F is the strongest complete home-theater package. The Sonos Arc Ultra is the better standalone bar and music platform, while the JBL Bar 1000MK2 offers detachable surrounds at a lower complete-system price. This guide uses U.S. specifications and prices checked on August 8, 2026; availability and discounts can change.

1. Samsung HW-Q990F: best Wi-Fi home-theater system for most buyers
The HW-Q990F is the best choice when “soundbar” really means a complete cinema system. The box includes the main bar, a separate subwoofer and wireless rear speakers, with an 11.1.4-channel layout and up-firing drivers for height effects. It supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, HDMI 2.1 passthrough, 4K at 120Hz, VRR, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision passthrough.

Samsung lists the U.S. model as HW-Q990F/ZA. Samsung’s direct page listed $1,999.99 when checked but showed the product out of stock, so compare retailer stock and sale prices before treating that figure as a realistic street price.
Why buy the Q990F instead of the Q990H?
The newer Q990H keeps the same basic 11.1.4 hardware. Independent testing found that its main changes are software and processing features rather than a substantial physical redesign. The Q990F is therefore the better buy when it is meaningfully cheaper.
The Q990H becomes more interesting if you specifically want Sound Elevation, which is designed to position dialogue higher toward the screen, or Auto Volume. Testing found that Sound Elevation can improve vertical dialogue placement but may reduce horizontal dialogue precision, so it is not an automatic upgrade for every listener.

- Open Home screen → Settings → All Settings → Sound.
- Select Q-Symphony Setup.
- Choose the soundbar or speaker.
- Select Apply.
The TV and soundbar must be on the same Wi-Fi network for the Q-Symphony 4.0 setup described by Samsung. Q-Symphony is not guaranteed to sound better in every room or with every type of content; compare it with the soundbar-only mode.
2. Sonos Arc Ultra: best standalone Wi-Fi soundbar and music platform
The Arc Ultra is the cleanest choice for buyers who want one premium bar now and the option to build a larger system later. It has 14 Sonos-engineered drivers, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, AirPlay 2, Trueplay room tuning and access to Sonos multiroom features.
It is a standalone bar, not a bundled surround package. Sonos’s spatial processing can create a wide presentation, but the box does not include a subwoofer or rear speakers. Add a Sonos Sub and compatible Era speakers if you want stronger bass and genuine rear-channel effects.

Connectivity is more limited than on the Samsung or JBL:
- One HDMI eARC/ARC connection.
- No full HDMI input for passing a console or disc player through the bar.
- Optical connection only through a separately sold adapter.
- Dolby TrueHD and other lossless Atmos formats require eARC; regular ARC is more restricted.
For music, the Arc Ultra is exceptionally flexible. It works with AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth and can be grouped with other Sonos products. It uses the home Wi-Fi network or Ethernet where supported rather than SonosNet as a dedicated wireless network.
Trueplay setup and its iPhone limitation
To tune an Arc Ultra, open the Sonos app and go to Settings → select the Arc Ultra under Your System → Sound → Trueplay → Trueplay Tuning. iPhone and iPad users can select Quick tuning or Advanced tuning. Android users receive Quick tuning only, and some older or unsupported Apple devices cannot run Advanced tuning. If you add a Sub or surrounds later, retune the system.
3. Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 (HT-A9000): best for a Sony BRAVIA TV
The BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9, also sold under the model number HT-A9000, is a 7.0.2-channel bar with 13 speaker units. It supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced, Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping. Its listed direct price is $1,499.99.
Its main advantage is integration with compatible Sony BRAVIA televisions. Acoustic Center Sync can use the TV and soundbar together as the center channel, while Voice Zoom 3 is intended to make speech easier to hear. You can add Sony’s optional wireless subwoofer and rear speakers later rather than buying a full surround system immediately.
The Bar 9 supports 4K/120Hz and 8K/60Hz passthrough, VRR and ALLM, but it has only one HDMI input and one HDMI eARC/ARC output. If you have several consoles and source devices, connect them to the TV or add an HDMI switch.
Fixing interruptions from optional Sony speakers
Walls and furniture can interfere with the wireless subwoofer or rear speakers. Sony recommends placing a speaker more than 2 inches from a side wall and more than 4 inches from a rear wall. If audio still cuts out:

- Open the BRAVIA Connect app.
- Go to Settings → Wireless Speaker Settings → Wireless Channel.
- Leave it on Auto; if necessary, try Group.
- Set Wireless Playback Quality to Priority on Stable Connection.
4. Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar: best for dialogue processing and simple operation
The Bose Smart Ultra is aimed at buyers who value clear speech, voice control and straightforward operation more than a box full of discrete surround speakers. It supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Dolby Atmos, and includes microphones for voice features and ADAPTiQ room calibration.
Bose TrueSpace processes non-Atmos material into a wider, Atmos-like presentation. That does not turn the original program into a native Dolby Atmos mix, but it can make ordinary TV and stereo music sound less confined to the bar.
Run calibration in the Bose app by selecting Audio. If Audio is not visible, tap the product-control icon in the lower-left corner, then select ADAPTiQ → Run ADAPTiQ Now. Run ADAPTiQ again after adding a Bose bass module or surround speakers so the new hardware is included.
If the app cannot connect the soundbar to Wi-Fi, Bose’s alternate process is to hold the remote’s Mute button and Bose app button until the light bar glows amber. Then select Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar in the phone’s Wi-Fi settings and return to the Bose app.
5. JBL Bar 1000MK2: best balance of price, bass and detachable surrounds
The JBL Bar 1000MK2 is a 7.1.4-channel system with a 10-inch wireless subwoofer and detachable wireless surrounds. JBL lists it at $1,199.95. The surrounds can be removed from the bar and placed behind the seating position, making them useful for movie night without requiring permanent speaker cables across the room.

They still need charging or docking, and the main bar and subwoofer require power outlets. This is wireless audio, not a wire-free electrical installation.
For source devices, the JBL has three HDMI inputs and one eARC output, along with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ passthrough. Its Wi-Fi networking supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax. The JBL One app supports Google Cast, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Roon Ready streaming.

When JBL One cannot find the bar
During first setup, the display shows HELLO, followed by SETUP WIFI. Keep the phone running JBL One within 10 meters, or 33 feet, of the bar. If the app still cannot find it, hold the two soundbar buttons specified in JBL’s manual for more than 10 seconds to re-enter Wi-Fi setup mode. If your network name is missing, enter the SSID and password manually.
6. Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Max: best for wired connectivity in a single bar
The AMBEO Max is an older design, but it remains a sensible option for someone who wants large single-bar sound and more physical inputs than most modern Wi-Fi bars provide. It has three HDMI inputs, HDMI eARC, optical, Ethernet, USB for updates and an RCA subwoofer pre-out.

It supports Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, Chromecast, multiple streaming services, Dolby Atmos Music and Sony 360 Reality Audio. Its large enclosure can produce an expansive soundstage without rear speakers.
The important limitation is the subwoofer connection. The original AMBEO Max does not support a wireless connection to Sennheiser’s AMBEO Subwoofer. It uses a wired subwoofer output. Sennheiser’s wireless-subwoofer support applies to the newer AMBEO Plus and Mini, not the Max.

Confirm the TV connection
Look for an HDMI port labeled ARC or, preferably, eARC. A Wi-Fi connection does not replace this cable for TV audio. eARC is the safer choice for lossless Atmos formats and high-bandwidth audio.
Count HDMI inputs
The Arc Ultra has one eARC/ARC port and no full HDMI input. The Sony Bar 9 has one HDMI input. The JBL Bar 1000MK2 has three, while the Samsung Q990F provides HDMI 2.1 passthrough. If you own multiple consoles, a media player and a disc player, this difference can determine whether you need an HDMI switch.
Separate wireless audio from electrical power
A wireless subwoofer still needs an outlet. Rear speakers usually do too. JBL’s detachable surrounds are an exception while detached because they run from internal batteries, but they must be recharged.

Match the ecosystem to your phone and TV
Choose Sonos if multiroom music and gradual expansion are central. Choose Samsung if you have a compatible Samsung TV and want Q-Symphony. Sony’s strongest features are reserved for compatible BRAVIA models. Bose is the simplest fit for users who prioritize voice features and dialogue processing.
Which Wi-Fi soundbar should you buy?

FAQ
Does a Wi-Fi soundbar need HDMI?
Usually, yes. Wi-Fi handles streaming, app control, multiroom audio and some wireless speaker connections, but the TV normally sends audio to the soundbar through HDMI ARC or eARC.
Are wireless soundbar speakers completely cable-free?
No. Wireless speakers do not normally need an audio cable to the soundbar, but the bar and subwoofer need power. Rear speakers also generally need power, except battery-powered designs such as the detachable JBL surrounds while they are being used away from the bar.

Is the Samsung Q990H better than the Q990F?
It is newer, but not automatically better value. Both use an 11.1.4-channel design, and independent testing found that the Q990H’s main improvements are software features such as Sound Elevation and Auto Volume. The Q990F is often the better purchase when discounted.
Can the Sonos Arc Ultra connect directly to a game console?
Not directly through an HDMI input: the Arc Ultra has one HDMI eARC/ARC connection and no full HDMI input. Connect the console to the TV, then send audio from the TV to the soundbar. Check that the TV supports the audio formats and passthrough features you need.
Does the Sennheiser AMBEO Max support a wireless AMBEO subwoofer?
No. The AMBEO Max uses a wired RCA subwoofer output. Wireless AMBEO Subwoofer support applies to the AMBEO Plus and Mini, not the original Max.
Which soundbar is best for a Samsung TV?
The Samsung HW-Q990F or Q990H is the natural match if your TV is on Samsung’s compatibility list and you want Q-Symphony. The TV and soundbar must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network for the supported Q-Symphony 4.0 setup.
