There is no single best VPN for every job. NordVPN is the strongest all-rounder in this shortlist, Surfshark is the better household bargain, Proton VPN is the privacy-first choice, and Mullvad is the simplest option for users who care more about anonymous signup than a large server network.
These recommendations reflect testing and product information available in 2026. Prices and features change, so the figures below include dates where they matter. A VPN changes the route between your device and the internet; it does not make you anonymous, prevent every form of tracking, or increase the speed of your underlying broadband connection.

1. NordVPN — best overall
NordVPN is the safest recommendation when you want one service to cover everyday browsing, public Wi-Fi, streaming, downloads, and several household devices. Its balance is better than choosing a provider that excels in only one category. Testing reported strong speed, usability, security, and streaming results, while its network reached 211 locations after an April 15, 2026 expansion.
That “211 locations” figure is not 211 countries. Providers count countries, cities, locations, and physical or virtual servers differently, so network-size comparisons are approximate. NordVPN also reported servers in every U.S. state after the expansion.

NordVPN supports NordLynx, NordWhisper, and OpenVPN on current Windows documentation. NordLynx is the normal starting point; OpenVPN is a useful fallback when compatibility matters. On Windows, the relevant controls are under Settings → Connection and security → Protocol.
NordVPN limitations
- The service allows ten simultaneous connections, but its protocol limitation permits only five devices to connect to the same server at once.
- Custom DNS disables SmartPlay and can cause website problems.
Stay invisible on LANcan prevent access to printers and other local devices.- Users with manual configurations may need to update server details after network IP changes. App users should not normally notice this.
For a reliable emergency stop, use Settings → Kill Switch → enable Internet Kill Switch. This is separate from adding individual programs to the app kill switch list.
2. Surfshark — best value for families
Surfshark’s most compelling feature is unlimited simultaneous connections. That makes it a practical choice for a household with phones, laptops, tablets, televisions, and game consoles, assuming the relevant apps or router configuration support the devices you own.

Surfshark says the subscription renews annually after the introductory period. Treat that as a promotional price, not the long-term cost.
Surfshark’s Bypasser feature is its split-tunneling tool. On Windows, open Settings → VPN Settings → Bypasser. You can route selected apps outside the tunnel or send only selected traffic through the VPN. Bypasser is also available on macOS; platform support is not identical, especially for website-based rules.
Its kill switch has two distinct behaviors:
- Soft kill switch: blocks traffic when the VPN unexpectedly disconnects.
- Strict kill switch: blocks internet access whenever the VPN is off, including after a manual disconnect.
Surfshark is not our first choice for users whose priority is the most consistent streaming access or the strongest blocking performance. Testing found weaker streaming results than NordVPN and lower scores for malware, phishing, and ad blocking. It remains the better value pick when the number of devices matters more than extracting the best result from every category.

3. Proton VPN — best for privacy
Proton VPN is the strongest mainstream choice for readers who want privacy features they can inspect and a provider with substantial audit documentation. Its apps are open source, and Proton’s fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit was published on April 29, 2026. The Securitum review reported no evidence of browsing, DNS, destination-service, traffic-content, or user-identifiable connection metadata logs in the infrastructure examined.
That is useful evidence, not a permanent guarantee. An audit covers a defined scope and period, and a server-side no-logs audit is not the same thing as a complete audit of every app, account system, payment record, or diagnostic process.
Proton also has one of the more useful free VPN plans. Proton Free restricts users to randomly selected servers in 10 countries and one simultaneous device. It is suitable for occasional browsing and testing the app, but not for choosing a specific country or covering a whole household. Paid plans unlock more locations and advanced capabilities.
Proton’s advanced kill switch
On Windows, open Settings → Connection → Kill switch. For the stronger mode, enable the kill-switch settings, select Advanced kill switch, then click Reconnect if connected or Apply if disconnected.
Advanced kill switch blocks all internet traffic unless a Proton VPN connection is active, including after a restart. That is valuable for a device that must never communicate outside the tunnel, but it has an unusual failure mode: Proton warns that certain Windows password changes, updates, hardware changes, or BIOS changes can require online Microsoft-account authentication before login. Keep a backup local offline Windows account before enabling this mode.

On Windows, Proton says standard and advanced kill switches can work with split tunneling. That compatibility does not apply across most other platforms.

4. ExpressVPN — easiest Windows experience
ExpressVPN remains a good choice when a clean interface and dependable Windows setup matter more than the lowest promotional price. Its Windows app includes Lightway, split tunneling, an advanced kill switch, and routing rules for websites or IP addresses.
ExpressVPN now has Basic, Advanced, and Express Pro tiers rather than one universal plan. The current simultaneous-connection limits are 10, 12, and 14 respectively. Check the checkout page for the exact price and renewal terms because those tiers and promotions can change.
To configure the Windows kill switch, open Profile → under Settings, choose Internet Kill Switch → Enable when connected. For the stricter behavior, enable Enable at all times.
Split tunneling is under Profile → Split Tunneling. Select Add App, choose a program, click Add, and then select Bypass VPN or Only VPN. You can also use Add IP Address for an IPv4 address, IPv6 address, or CIDR subnet.
IP-based exclusions are unreliable for large websites because their addresses can change or be shared with unrelated services. If you use WireGuard, ExpressVPN requires a disconnect and reconnect after split-tunneling changes. Lightway Turbo is Windows-only, cannot be combined with split tunneling or Lightway TCP, and its dual-tunnel mode may cause problems with some websites, apps, or games.
5. Mullvad — best for anonymous account creation
Mullvad takes a different approach from providers that emphasize bundles, long introductory discounts, and large feature lists. You can create an account number without providing an email address, and Mullvad accepts cash as well as other payment methods. Its price is a simple €5 per month including VAT, whether you pay monthly or for a year. It offers a 14-day money-back guarantee, except for cash payments.

This makes Mullvad particularly attractive when you do not want your VPN account tied to an email address. It is also easy to budget for because there is no need to calculate whether a two-year discount will renew at a much higher rate.
The trade-off is a smaller network. A February 2026 review counted 85 locations in 49 countries and 649 servers, though counts vary as providers add and remove capacity. Mullvad also does not offer port forwarding, which can matter for some advanced peer-to-peer setups.
Mullvad’s desktop kill switch is always active while connected and cannot be disabled in the app. To configure split tunneling on Windows, click the gear icon in the top-right corner → Split tunneling → click the plus icon beside an application. If it is not listed, scroll down and choose Find another app.
Excluded programs use the ordinary connection and expose the real IP address. Mullvad also warns that another VPN’s driver can interfere with split tunneling and produce an unable to communicate with Mullvad kernel driver error. Uninstalling the conflicting VPN and restarting the computer is the documented workaround.
6. PrivadoVPN Free — best limited free option
PrivadoVPN Free is worth mentioning only with its limits clearly stated. Testing reported 13 locations and a 10-GB monthly data cap. That is enough for occasional browsing, travel, or checking whether a VPN works on a particular device, but it is not a practical replacement for a paid plan if you stream regularly or download large files.

The free plan also has less evidence behind its privacy claims than Proton VPN. Testing reported no third-party audit of PrivadoVPN’s no-logs claim. Do not choose it solely because it costs nothing; choose it when the usage limit matches what you actually need.

How we evaluated these VPNs
A VPN ranking based only on a single peak speed number is not useful. Results depend on the test connection, server distance, protocol, time of day, hardware, and the VPN’s own network conditions. A VPN cannot deliver more than the user’s underlying internet connection.
A meaningful comparison should record:
- Baseline speed without a VPN.
- Nearby and long-distance server speeds.
- Latency and connection time.
- Performance using a modern protocol and OpenVPN TCP or UDP where available.
- DNS, IPv4, IPv6, and WebRTC leak behavior.
- Standard and strict kill-switch behavior.
- Split-tunneling results and local-network access.
- Streaming by service and country rather than a single “works” claim.
- P2P behavior, crashes, reconnects, stalled connections, and app usability.
Privacy claims also need careful wording. “No logs” is not one universal technical category: a provider may retain account, payment, support, diagnostic, or operational information while not retaining browsing activity. A VPN provider can see some information about the connection, while destination websites generally see the VPN server’s IP address instead of the user’s ordinary address.

Does a VPN make me anonymous?
