As of August 8, 2026, the best phone depends on what you value most. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the strongest all-around choice for buyers invested in Apple’s ecosystem, while the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the most feature-packed Android flagship. Google’s Pixel 10 Pro leads for point-and-shoot photography, and the Google Pixel 10a delivers the best balance for shoppers who want to stay below $500.

This guide compares unlocked U.S. list prices, not temporary carrier credits or trade-in promotions. Those offers can make a premium phone appear inexpensive, but they often require an installment plan, an eligible trade-in, and a specific wireless service.

Our top recommendations

1. iPhone 17 Pro Max: best phone overall

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the safest premium recommendation if you want the best blend of speed, cameras, display quality, video recording, and long-term software support. It uses Apple’s A19 Pro chip and the Pro Fusion camera system. The iPhone 17 Pro line also adds a 120Hz Super Retina XDR display, an 18MP Center Stage front camera, and either a 6.3-inch or 6.9-inch screen depending on the model.

The Pro Max is the better choice for people who want maximum screen and battery capacity, but it is also a large, expensive phone. Consider the smaller iPhone 17 Pro if one-handed use matters more than the largest display. Apple’s current U.S. pricing starts at $1,099 for the Pro; storage upgrades can push the final price substantially higher.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max, US Version, 2TB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Choose it if: you want the most complete iPhone and already use services such as iCloud, Apple Watch, AirDrop, or FaceTime.

Skip it if: you prefer Android customization, need a lower price, or want a phone that is easier to handle.

2. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra: best Android flagship

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the Android equivalent of a top-spec workstation. It has a 6.9-inch QHD+ display, Android 16 with One UI 8.5, up to 1TB of storage, and Samsung’s new Privacy Display feature. Samsung lists the U.S. starting price at $1,299.99, with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB versions available. General availability began March 11, 2026.

This is the right phone for buyers who want a large screen for documents, split-screen apps, games, and media. Samsung’s software and Galaxy AI tools are also a major part of the experience. However, AI features can differ by country, language, account, and subscription, so do not choose the phone solely on a feature shown in a launch presentation.

Choose it if: you want the most versatile Android phone, maximum storage, and a large productivity-focused display.

Skip it if: you want a smaller phone, a simpler Android interface, or the best point-and-shoot photography.

3. Google Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL: best for photography

The Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL are the camera-focused choices in this list. Both use Google’s Tensor G5 platform and LTPO OLED displays with adaptive refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz. The Pro has a 6.3-inch screen, while the Pro XL increases that to 6.8 inches. Google advertises peak brightness of up to 3,300 nits.

The two models are primarily a size and battery decision rather than separate camera tiers. Choose the Pro XL if you want the larger viewfinder and longer endurance; choose the standard Pro if you want a more manageable flagship. Pixel phones are particularly appealing for people who take children, pets, people, and night scenes without wanting to adjust camera settings manually.

Choose it if: photography, Google’s Android experience, and intelligent editing tools are more important than gaming performance.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Silver- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)

Skip it if: you need the broadest accessory ecosystem, the fastest sustained gaming performance, or Samsung’s productivity hardware.

4. iPhone 17: best mainstream iPhone value

The iPhone 17 is the better buy than a Pro model for many ordinary users. It starts at $799, includes a 120Hz display, and runs on Apple’s A19 platform. Apple also introduced its N1 wireless chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

You give up some Pro camera hardware and premium features, but the everyday experience remains fast and polished. It is a strong choice for messaging, streaming, mobile photography, gaming, and years of iOS updates without paying for features you may not use.

5. Samsung Galaxy S26: best smaller Android flagship

The Galaxy S26 is the compact pick among Samsung’s conventional S26 flagships. It has a 6.3-inch display, measures 149.6 × 71.7 × 7.2mm, and weighs 167g. Its U.S. starting price is $899.99.

“Compact” needs context: this is smaller than the S26 Ultra, but it is not a small phone by the standards of older mini models. It suits buyers who want flagship performance and Samsung’s software without carrying a 6.9-inch device.

6. Google Pixel 10a: best budget Android phone

The Pixel 10a starts at $499 in the U.S. and is available with 128GB or 256GB of storage. Its useful features include a 6.3-inch 120Hz Actua display, dual rear cameras, IP68 water and dust resistance, and Google’s seven-year guarantee for operating-system, security, and Pixel Drop updates.

It is the budget phone to buy when long-term support matters. The 120Hz screen also makes scrolling feel smoother than on many inexpensive phones. Remember that $499 is Google’s unlocked retail starting price; a carrier deal may reduce the effective cost, but that is not the phone’s normal list price.

7. iPhone 17e: best budget iPhone

The iPhone 17e starts at $599 and includes 256GB of base storage, an A19 chip, a 6.1-inch display, USB-C, and a 48MP Fusion rear camera. Apple specifies up to 26 hours of video playback.

It is a good route into the current iPhone generation if you prioritize performance, software support, and storage over camera flexibility. The important compromise is the display: the iPhone 17e is not a 120Hz phone and is specified at up to 60Hz. Its single rear camera also makes it less versatile than the iPhone 17’s dual-camera system.

Foldable phones worth considering

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has an 8-inch internal display and a 6.4-inch outer display. Its wide exterior screen makes it more usable while closed, while the internal panel is useful for reading, multitasking, maps, and video. It is the strongest foldable recommendation for buyers who want a phone that can become a small tablet without adopting Samsung’s software style.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, and Z Flip8

Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8 at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, 2026. The Fold8 Ultra is Samsung’s first Ultra-branded foldable. The Fold8 uses a wider form factor, while the Flip8 keeps the clamshell design and expands the functions of its FlexWindow cover display.

Best phone for gaming: Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro

The Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro remains the specialist choice for serious mobile gaming. Its strengths are sustained performance, gaming controls, cooling accessories, and unusually strong battery life. It is a better gaming tool than a conventional flagship when long sessions and physical controls matter.

It is not a current-generation 2026 flagship, however. It is an older model approaching its second birthday, and Asus is not expected to release a new phone in 2026. Its camera system, software-support outlook, and mainstream-network package are not the reasons to buy it. Buy it for gaming-specific hardware.

How to choose the right phone

  1. Set a real unlocked budget. Use the phone’s retail price before trade-in credits. The meaningful price steps in this lineup are $499 for the Pixel 10a, $599 for the iPhone 17e, $799 for the iPhone 17, and $899.99 for the Galaxy S26.
  2. Pick an ecosystem. Moving between iOS and Android affects app purchases, password managers, accessories, watches, tablets, and cloud storage. An Apple Watch, for example, is a strong reason to stay with an iPhone.
  3. Choose screen size deliberately. Large phones are better for video and multitasking but harder to use one-handed. The S26 is 6.3 inches; the S26 Ultra is 6.9 inches; the Pixel Fold adds an 8-inch internal display.
  4. Check storage before comparing deals. A low starting price can become much higher when you select the storage you actually need. This matters especially with the iPhone 17 Pro Max, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Galaxy S26 Ultra.
  5. Buy for your camera habits. Pixel is the straightforward choice for computational photography. iPhone remains especially attractive for people who record a lot of video. Samsung offers the broadest flagship feature set and flexible camera hardware.
  6. Verify AI requirements. Apple Intelligence, Gemini, and Galaxy AI do not provide identical tools. Availability may depend on supported languages, region, account settings, internet access, or a subscription.

What not to use when comparing phones

  • Do not compare manufacturer battery hours with independent test hours. A manufacturer video-playback estimate and a web-browsing endurance test use different brightness, apps, networks, and settings.
  • Do not treat carrier credits as the unlocked price. A $0-per-month promotion may require 24 or 36 months of service and an eligible trade-in.
  • Do not assume the iPhone 17e equals the iPhone 17. The 17e has one 48MP Fusion camera and a 60Hz display; the iPhone 17 has a more advanced dual-camera system and 120Hz display.
  • Do not reuse old foldable rankings. Samsung’s July 2026 launch changed the current Fold and Flip lineup. Articles calling the Z Fold7 or Z Flip7 the newest Samsung foldables are out of date.

FAQ

What is the best phone overall in 2026?

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the strongest all-around pick for many buyers because of its performance, cameras, display, and Apple ecosystem. The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the better overall choice for Android users who want maximum features and a large productivity-focused screen.

Is the Pixel 10a really $499 in the U.S.?

Yes. Google lists the Pixel 10a from $499 with 128GB of storage. Carrier promotions and trade-in offers may lower the effective price, but they should not replace the unlocked retail price in comparisons.

Is the iPhone 17e a 120Hz phone?

No. The iPhone 17e is specified at up to 60Hz. The iPhone 17 has a 120Hz display, making it the better choice if smooth scrolling and animations are important.

Which phone is best for photography?

The Google Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL are the best camera-focused choices in this guide. They use the same general Pro camera platform, so choose between them mainly by preferred screen size and battery capacity.

The Bottom Line

For the best premium all-rounder, buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra for the most capable Android flagship, the Pixel 10 Pro for photography, the iPhone 17 for mainstream iOS value, and the Pixel 10a for the strongest budget Android package. The iPhone 17e is worth considering when you want a lower-cost iPhone with 256GB of storage, but its 60Hz display and single rear camera are important compromises.
