For the broadest documented Linux support, start with a Wacom model covered by the Linux Wacom Project. If you prefer Huion, choose only a model on Huion’s current support list and note its stated Ubuntu limitation. For an XPPen option, the Deco Pro Gen 2 is listed for Linux over a wired connection. These recommendations are based on published support information, not hands-on testing; check the exact model and revision, Linux distribution, connection type, and drawing application before buying.

These are support-path recommendations, not a claim that one brand is universally best. The Linux Wacom Project says its drivers are preinstalled in most major distributions and support virtually all Wacom tablets and TabletPCs out of the box; “virtually all” is not a guarantee for every new or unusual model.
What to know about each driver route
Wacom: the Linux Wacom Project
Wacom says it does not offer a Linux driver directly and points users to the Linux Wacom Project. The project describes broad device coverage and distribution-provided drivers. Start with the drivers included in your Linux distribution, then consult the project documentation if your device is not recognized or expected features are missing. Tablet input involves several layers: the kernel initializes the device; Wayland desktops commonly receive events through libinput; Xorg uses its tablet input handling; and libwacom supplies tablet metadata. A device moving the pointer does not by itself prove pressure or tilt is reaching your art application. The Linux Wacom Project documents these components.

Huion: model-specific support with an Ubuntu limitation
Huion lists selected Inspiroy pen tablets and Kamvas pen displays for Linux, while noting that other models may be supported in future. Its current help page states that the listed Linux driver support is for Ubuntu. Do not infer support for an unlisted model from the brand name or from another Huion model’s success: compare the exact product against the live support list and follow the current driver instructions.
XPPen Deco Pro Gen 2: a wired Linux option
XPPen lists three Deco Pro Gen 2 variants: MT0962B (MW, 9 × 6 inches), MT1172B (LW, 11 × 7 inches), and MT1592B (XLW, 15 × 9 inches). Its product page lists Linux compatibility over a wired connection; its Bluetooth compatibility list names Windows and macOS, not Linux. The series is specified with 16K pressure levels and 60-degree tilt recognition, but those hardware specifications do not establish that pressure or tilt will work in every Linux desktop and drawing application. Review the manufacturer’s product details for the specific variant and connection.

OpenTabletDriver: a model-by-model alternative
OpenTabletDriver is an option when the precise model and revision appear in its database. The project warns that revisions can differ, so check the identifier on the tablet or packaging against the tablet list. Its Linux FAQ says to use Artist Mode for pressure output. Its general FAQ warns that another active tablet driver can cause duplicate cursor movement.
How to check compatibility before you buy
- Identify the exact tablet. Record the full model code and revision from the device or box. This is especially important for OpenTabletDriver, whose database warns that revisions can vary.
- Match the driver route to the model and distribution. For Wacom, check the Linux Wacom Project’s current device guidance and first try your distribution’s built-in support. For Huion, confirm the exact product appears on the manufacturer’s list and account for its stated Ubuntu limitation. For XPPen Deco Pro Gen 2, treat Linux support as wired. For OpenTabletDriver, check the exact model and revision in its database.
- Confirm the connection you intend to use. Do not assume a model’s Bluetooth support on Windows or macOS extends to Linux. If the documented Linux route is wired, plan to use a cable.
- Check the desktop session and application. Pressure, tilt, buttons, screen mapping, and application recognition are separate checks. Consult your desktop environment’s tablet settings and the drawing application’s current input guidance; test the features you need rather than relying on pointer movement alone.
- Avoid competing drivers. If you choose OpenTabletDriver, do not leave another tablet driver active; duplicate cursor movement can result. Follow the project’s Linux FAQ for Artist Mode when pressure output is needed.
What “reliable support” can and cannot tell you
Published compatibility guidance helps identify a plausible driver path, but it is not a guarantee for every combination of tablet revision, distribution, Wayland or Xorg session, and drawing application. No comparative reliability statistic is established for these brands, and pressure-level specifications are not evidence of driver reliability. The practical standard is whether the exact device is documented for your setup and whether the features you need reach your application.
