For a clear demonstration of propulsion, try a balloon rocket on a string. A fizz-tablet rocket is another option, but it uses a sealed canister that builds pressure and needs extra precautions.
Choose the right rocket experiment
| Activity | Materials and launch | Best for | Precautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper straw rocket | Paper, pencil, scissors, tape, straw, and a way to measure distance; launch by blowing through the straw. | Making and comparing designs. NASA JPL lists grades 4–8 and an estimated time under 30 minutes. | Clear the launch area of people and hazards. |
| Balloon rocket | Balloon, straw, tape, and taut line; escaping air propels the balloon along the line. | Observing propulsion direction. NASA JPL presents a K–2 lesson; Smithsonian lists a balloon activity for ages 9+ at 20 minutes and a design challenge for ages 6+ at 20–30 minutes. | Secure the line between supports and keep the launch path clear. |
| Fizz-tablet rocket | Paper rocket, 35-mm film canister with a suitable lid, water, and part of an effervescent antacid tablet. | Seeing gas pressure pop a lid and propel a rocket. | Wear eye protection. The Canadian Space Agency says to stand back at least 2 metres and not aim at anyone. |
Age ranges and durations above are the publishers’ estimates, not guarantees that an activity suits every child. The paper and balloon rockets use air for propulsion, so neither requires vinegar or a chemical reaction.
Make a paper straw rocket
This is the easiest choice for an at-home activity: it uses common craft supplies, needs no chemical launch materials, and lets children change the design and compare how far it travels. NASA JPL’s project is intended for grades 4–8 and is estimated to take under 30 minutes.
What you need
- Paper, a pencil, scissors, and tape
- A plastic or reusable soda straw
- A meter stick or measuring tape
- Optionally, NASA JPL’s template and data log
Build and launch
- Wrap a paper rectangle around a pencil to form a tube. Tape the tube so it holds its shape.
- Make two fin units, attach them to the paper tube, and bend the fins at right angles.
- Pinch and twist the front end closed, then tape it to make the rocket’s nose.
- Slide the rocket off the pencil and onto the straw.
- Clear people and hazards from the launch area. Blow through the straw to launch the rocket.
- Measure how far it travels and write down the result.
NASA JPL’s template rocket is about 13 cm (about 5 inches) tall; that is the size of that particular template, not a proven ideal size for every design. To explore what affects distance, change one feature at a time—such as rocket length, fin shape, fin size, or fin angle—and record each result.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a balloon rocket on a string
A balloon rocket demonstrates propulsion without vinegar or a tablet reaction: air rushes out one way, and the balloon moves the other way. NASA JPL explains, “The balloon will travel in the opposite direction from which the air escaped.”
What you need
- A plastic milkshake straw
- A long party balloon
- Clear tape
- Nylon monofilament fishing line
- Two supports to hold the line taut
Set up and launch
- Thread the line through the straw and secure the line taut between two supports.
- Inflate the balloon, but do not tie it. Pinch the opening closed to keep the air inside.
- Tape the balloon to the straw, keeping its opening pointed along the line.
- Release the balloon opening and watch it travel along the line.
Before release, ask children to predict which way the balloon will travel. Repeat the launch and note the direction. For a controlled variation, turn the balloon so its opening points the opposite way, then observe what changes.

Try a fizz-tablet rocket only with added precautions
NASA Space Place and the Canadian Space Agency describe a vinegar-free rocket made from a paper rocket and a 35-mm film canister, using water and an effervescent antacid tablet. The reaction releases carbon dioxide in the enclosed canister; pressure builds until the lid pops and propels the rocket. This is a pressure-based activity, not just a paper craft, so use adult oversight and follow the safety directions.
Safety before setup
- Wear eye protection, as both agencies specify.
- Use the simple activity as described; do not improvise a pressure vessel or add fuels or other chemicals.
- Never point the rocket at anyone. The Canadian Space Agency says to stand back at least 2 metres.
- Do the messy activity outside or prepare paper towel, as the Canadian agency recommends.
Documented proportions
NASA Space Place specifies filling the canister one-third full of water and adding half an effervescent tablet. The Canadian Space Agency gives the same proportions. Both sources require a lid that fits inside the rim; NASA says the fit is required, and the Canadian agency says it gives better results. Follow the activity’s directions and keep clear while the lid pops.

These are older official instructions: NASA Space Place says its page was last updated in 2014, and the Canadian Space Agency says its page was modified in 2016. Neither source establishes a typical launch height or a reliable performance comparison, so do not treat one launch as a guaranteed result.

For either air-powered activity, or for repeated paper-rocket launches, make observations under a consistent setup. A simple record helps children distinguish a design change from an accidental difference in how a launch was done.
