Homework support should target the specific barrier a student faces—such as understanding directions, reading, writing, staying organized, or getting started—while preserving access to the learning goal. A parent can discuss options with the teacher or case manager, including clearer instructions, assistive technology, shorter task segments, or a plan for late work. The right support depends on the student, assignment, and school process; a diagnosis or unfinished homework does not automatically qualify a student for a particular accommodation.

What homework accommodations can address

An accommodation changes how a student accesses, completes, or organizes learning—for example, the format of directions, the tools available, or the timing of work. A modification may change the task itself or the expected level. Those choices should be tied to the learning objective and the student’s needs, rather than used as a blanket reduction in expectations.

Federal guidance offers examples, not a universal checklist. An individualized team can consider whether an adjustment addresses the student’s actual barrier and supports access to the general curriculum. The U.S. Department of Education’s January 16, 2025 letter on inclusive educational practices discusses clear directions, breaking longer assignments into parts, checking understanding, alternate formats, assistive technology, and adapting homework when a student needs it.

When directions or task understanding are the barrier

Possible supports include written steps, a visual example of a completed task, color-coded directions and due dates, or asking the student to explain the first step before beginning. Colorado’s dyslexia handbook suggests, for example, photographing instructions instead of copying them and providing a visual model. These are state-resource examples, not requirements that apply nationally.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When reading or written output is the barrier

For reading access, an audiobook or text-to-speech may let a student engage with material without changing its subject matter. For written output, speech-to-text, a scribe, a graphic organizer, or a note-taking tool may help the student express what they know. Colorado’s handbook also lists spellcheck and word prediction for spelling-related tasks. The team should consider whether the tool supports the intended skill or bypasses it: a reading task meant to assess decoding, for instance, may call for a different approach than a task focused on understanding content.

When organization, attention, or work initiation is difficult

A homework folder, binder, or planner can help keep track of materials and assignments. For some students with ADHD, CDC guidance also suggests making assignments clear, checking understanding, reducing distractions, allowing breaks, using technology, and communicating with parents. The CDC notes that information is limited on which accommodation types are effective, so these are possibilities to consider—not proven solutions for every student or guidance specific to dyslexia.

Examples of supports to discuss with the school

The table compares examples by the barrier they may address and whether they ordinarily preserve the learning goal. It is not a ranking: an option’s fit depends on the task and student. An adjustment may be an informal classroom strategy or, when individually determined as necessary, included in a formal plan.

Support example Barrier it may address Does the learning goal usually remain the same? Who provides or teaches it
Clear, segmented directions; check that the student understands the first step Task understanding or getting started Yes; it clarifies access to the task Teacher can establish the directions and check-in; the student can practice using them
Photographed instructions, visual model, or color-coded steps Copying directions, sequencing, or remembering steps Usually; the format changes, not necessarily the objective Teacher may provide the materials; student uses them to work more independently
Text-to-speech or audiobook Reading access Depends on whether decoding is the skill being assessed School team can identify and teach appropriate tools; student uses them for access
Speech-to-text, graphic organizer, or word prediction Written output or spelling Depends on whether handwriting, spelling, or composition is the target School team can select and teach a tool; student uses it to produce work
Shorter segments, breaks, or a reduced-distraction work setting Sustaining attention or managing a long task Potentially, if the same objective and appropriate challenge are retained Teacher or school team may structure the task; student completes the segments
Homework folder, binder, or planner Keeping track of papers, assignments, or due dates Yes; it supports organization School staff can help set up routines; student uses the system, with prompting as needed
Late-work allowance Timing or disability-related barriers to completing work by the usual deadline Often, but the team should clarify expectations for the assignment School team or teacher sets the arrangement; it may be included in an individualized plan

The U.S. Department of Education’s Section 504 resource guide lists late homework, tutors, and assistive technology among examples of possible supports or policy changes. These examples do not mean every student automatically receives them. A planner or folder is one optional organizational aid, not a replacement for support the school determines is needed.

Can a student get less homework because of a learning disability?

Possibly, but there is no universal homework limit or automatic reduction established by the sources cited here. Shortening repetitive work, dividing a long assignment into parts, or adapting a task may be appropriate for an individual student. The key questions are what the assignment is intended to teach or assess, which barrier is getting in the way, and whether the proposed change preserves appropriate access and challenge. A change to the task or expected level is different from changing its format, timing, or support.

Ask the teacher or case manager how the student’s current plan applies to homework and how the team will review whether a support is helping. Do not assume that a fixed number of minutes, percentage reduction, or late-work rule applies to all students.

How IEP and Section 504 support differ

In U.S. public schools, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is part of the special-education process under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Section 504 is a civil-rights framework that may require individualized modifications and services for eligible students. The frameworks differ, but neither makes a specific homework adjustment automatic based only on a diagnosis, low grade, or difficulty finishing work.

What an IEP covers

IDEA requires an IEP to address matters including the student’s present levels, how the disability affects progress in the general curriculum, measurable goals, and the special education, services, and modifications the student needs. It also specifies anticipated frequency, location, and duration of services, and records required accommodations for assessments. Homework supports should be considered in relation to the student’s individual needs and educational program. See the U.S. Department of Education’s IEP content requirements.

What Section 504 covers

Section 504 eligibility and needed supports are determined individually. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights explains that a student with a disability may be entitled to reasonable modifications for meaningful access. A label alone does not establish that a particular accommodation is required. See OCR’s Section 504 guidance for students with disabilities and its parent and educator resource guide.

What to ask when homework takes hours

Bring specific examples to a teacher, case manager, or school support team. Describe the assignment and where the process breaks down, rather than relying only on the total time or a general statement that homework is hard.

  • Which kinds of tasks are difficult: reading, writing, copying, math steps, remembering materials, starting, or staying with the work?
  • What happens at the point the student gets stuck? Are directions misunderstood, materials missing, or written responses unusually difficult?
  • How often does this occur, and does it happen with particular subjects or formats?
  • What has helped so far, and how much adult prompting or direct help is needed?
  • How does the current IEP or Section 504 plan apply to homework, and how will the school review whether the support is working?

This concrete account helps the team discuss a support that matches the barrier. A folder may help a student who loses worksheets; it is unlikely to address a student who cannot access the reading in the assignment.

Requesting an evaluation or a plan review

If a student has no evaluation but disability-related needs are suspected, a parent can ask the school about an evaluation. OCR states that public schools have an affirmative obligation to evaluate when they know or have reason to believe a student has a disability or needs special education or related aids and services. The school cannot shift the burden or cost of that obligation to parents. Parents can also ask the school to review whether an existing plan addresses homework barriers. Procedures and eligibility decisions depend on the applicable process; this is general U.S. public-school information, not legal advice. See OCR’s Section 504 parent and educator guide.
