Keep shared rules in the repository’s formatter configuration, select that formatter in the editor, and verify changes with the project’s command-line formatter and checks. Treat an assistant’s formatting as a draft unless you have confirmed that its specific version follows the same rules.
Why make the editor and project formatter the authority?
A project formatter provides a repeatable rule set that can be applied to code whether it was written by a person or generated by an assistant. Prettier recommends using configuration files to set formatting options, so its extension, command-line interface, and other IDEs can draw on shared project rules. Its VS Code extension documentation states: “Using Prettier Configuration files to set formatting options is the recommended approach.”
By contrast, GitHub describes Copilot’s code suggestions as inline suggestions; that documentation does not establish a separate formatting policy for AI-generated code. Nor do these sources compare the formatting quality of assistants and editors. The practical choice is therefore not which formatter is universally “better,” but which one reliably applies the repository’s agreed rules.
When should you rely on the editor-invoked formatter?
- The repository already has a formatter and shared configuration.
- Contributors need consistent output in the editor, command line, and continuous integration.
- You want a format command or format-on-save to apply to routine edits as well as AI-assisted edits.
An assistant’s built-in formatter may be convenient if it follows the repository’s configured rules. Confirm that behavior for the particular assistant and editor version: the available documentation does not establish universal behavior for Cursor, Windsurf, or other assistants. If the assistant and editor produce different output, designate one project formatter as authoritative, select it explicitly in the editor, and confirm the result with the project’s command-line formatter.

How to set up a VS Code and Prettier workflow
- Install or enable the formatter extension the project uses.
- In VS Code settings, set
editor.defaultFormatterto that formatter. Use a language-specific setting when different languages need different formatters. - If you want files formatted automatically when saved, enable
editor.formatOnSave. VS Code also supports format-on-type and format-on-paste where the formatter supports them. - Commit the project’s Prettier configuration so contributors and command-line runs can use the same rules.
- Review
editor.codeActionsOnSaveif formatting and lint fixes both run on save. Prettier’s explicit fix action respects the selected default formatter; choosing a different default can prevent that action from running. - After an assistant edits code, run the project’s formatter and its tests or other validation. A file that looks formatted in the assistant’s output is not proof that it meets repository rules.
VS Code lets you format a document or selection and choose a formatter when multiple options are available for a language. It also allows its built-in formatter to be disabled for a language when an extension should handle formatting. The exact settings and behavior can change with releases; consult the current VS Code editing documentation and Prettier VS Code extension documentation.
What to compare if both options are available

For assistant integration, check the specific product and version rather than assuming that one tool’s behavior applies to others. The available documentation does not establish comparative productivity gains, fewer errors, or superior formatting quality for either option.
