Check the local connection between your PC, router and headset before buying new gear: connect the PC to the router with Ethernet where possible, confirm the headset uses a suitable Wi-Fi band, and make sure both devices can reach each other on the same local network. A broadband speed test alone cannot tell you whether that path is healthy.

Start with your streaming app’s network requirements

Requirements vary by app, so treat a minimum as a compatibility floor—not proof that your room’s wireless connection will be reliable.

App Published network guidance What to check
Steam Link Steam’s current support guidance lists a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as minimum router capability for supported Meta, HTC and PICO headsets; Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E is recommended. Its 2023 announcement also called for a router wired to the PC and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset. Steam’s announcement and current support FAQ. Check the router’s supported Wi-Fi generation and band, and whether the PC can use Ethernet.
Virtual Desktop The computer requirements specify a wired computer-to-5 GHz AC or AX router connection. Its FAQ says the PC and headset should use the same network; public apartment or office Wi-Fi may prevent them communicating. Virtual Desktop. Confirm the PC is wired to the router, the headset is on the same network, and the network permits device-to-device communication.
Meta Air Link The cited Meta material identifies network interference as one possible cause of late or dropped Air Link frames, but does not establish a universal Wi-Fi band, signal percentage or throughput threshold. Meta’s Air Link Framerate Insurance article. Check local signal, placement and reachability; do not treat a single number as a universal pass mark.
Microsoft Mixed Reality Link Microsoft recommends moving from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz or 6 GHz during Quest 3 virtual-display troubleshooting. Its pixelation guidance calls for at least 75% signal in that specific context. Microsoft Support. Where supported, try 5 GHz or 6 GHz, inspect signal, and confirm subnet reachability when the PC is wired.

Steam’s 2023 announcement also listed a GTX 970 or better and Windows 10 or newer for its announced setup; those are PC and software compatibility details, not network-readiness tests.

Check the PC’s connection to the router

For Steam Link and Virtual Desktop, wiring the PC to the router or access point with Ethernet is recommended in the cited guidance. This reserves Wi-Fi for the headset side of the connection and is a sensible first change if the PC currently connects wirelessly. Make sure the cable goes to the router or access point the headset uses.

For Meta Air Link, whether Ethernet is necessary is not established by the cited sources as a universal rule. A wired PC is still a useful troubleshooting step when practical, but do not infer that every Air Link setup must use Ethernet.

Confirm the headset’s Wi-Fi band

Check the headset’s Wi-Fi details or your router’s app to see which band it is using. Steam Link’s published guidance calls for 5 GHz and at least Wi-Fi 5 capability, with Wi-Fi 6 or 6E recommended. Microsoft suggests trying 5 GHz or 6 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz for Mixed Reality Link troubleshooting. Availability depends on both the router and headset.

On Windows, you can inspect the PC’s own Wi-Fi connection by opening Command Prompt and running:

netsh wlan show interfaces

Look for the Signal and Band fields. This reports the Windows PC’s Wi-Fi interface; it does not directly reveal the headset’s connection. For Microsoft’s Quest 3 Mixed Reality Link pixelation troubleshooting, the stated signal guidance is at least 75%. That is specific to that Microsoft troubleshooting context, not a universal threshold for other wireless VR apps.

Make sure the devices can see each other

The PC and headset need to communicate over the local network. Put them on the same home network, rather than placing the headset on guest Wi-Fi. For Mixed Reality Link, Microsoft says a wired PC and Wi-Fi headset should share a subnet. Virtual Desktop also advises checking that both devices use the same network.

Guest-network restrictions, client isolation, public apartment or office Wi-Fi, firewalls and VPNs can block discovery or connection depending on the app and network configuration. If the network is managed by a landlord, school or workplace, ask its administrator whether devices are allowed to communicate locally. Avoid disabling security software broadly; use app-specific firewall exceptions only when appropriate.

Test signal and placement where you play

Run the first test near the router or access point, then move to the usual play area. Walls, floors, distance, metal, interference and nearby electronic devices can weaken or disrupt the wireless signal. If the connection improves near the access point, placement or obstructions may be part of the problem.

A high internet speed-test result does not confirm that the local PC-to-headset route is sound. The cited vendor guidance focuses on local wiring, Wi-Fi band, signal and device reachability rather than a broadband speed target.

Troubleshoot in a controlled order

  1. Check network membership. Confirm the PC and headset are on the same home network, not a guest or isolated network. For Mixed Reality Link with a wired PC, check that both are on the same subnet.
  2. Verify the headset band. Use the headset or router app to confirm 5 GHz or supported 6 GHz where the app’s guidance calls for it; check the PC’s Wi-Fi band separately with netsh wlan show interfaces if needed.
  3. Wire the PC where practical. This is the recommended arrangement for Steam Link and Virtual Desktop. Connect it to the router or access point serving the headset.
  4. Move closer and retest. Reduce distance and obstructions, then retry from the intended play space.
  5. Check discovery blockers. Review guest isolation, firewall rules and VPN or proxy settings. Prefer app-specific exceptions over turning off protection, and consult the network administrator for managed Wi-Fi.
  6. Separate network symptoms from rendering symptoms. Meta identifies network interference as one cause of late or dropped Air Link frames; stutter can also arise from PC rendering or application behavior, so a network change may not address every case.

Decide whether new equipment is warranted

Change one condition at a time so you can tell what helps. Try Ethernet for the PC, a closer headset position, the appropriate Wi-Fi band, and a check for local isolation before replacing hardware. A Wi-Fi 6 router may be useful if the current router lacks a capability your app recommends or requires; the cited Steam guidance makes Wi-Fi 6/6E a recommendation, not a blanket requirement. No router model or universal throughput figure is established by these sources.
