Mining shares and physical metals have different return drivers and risks. Bullion gives more direct exposure to a metal’s price, but its owner earns no income from the metal and must account for premiums and ownership costs. A mining share represents ownership in a company: metal prices can affect its results, but costs, operations, financing and other company-specific factors also matter. The evidence here does not establish that either approach will deliver superior future returns.
What are you actually buying?
Physical gold
With a gold bar or coin, you own a physical product whose resale value is tied closely to the gold market, subject to the product’s price premium, resale spread and other costs. Unlike a bond, property or a company that pays dividends, gold itself provides no regular income or promise of repayment. Any return therefore depends on price appreciation exceeding the costs of buying, holding and selling it.
A mining-company share
A mining stock is an ownership interest in an issuer, not a claim to a set quantity of metal. The company’s sales and financial results may respond to gold or copper prices, but investors also bear the company’s business and financial risks. Its mines, production, costs, projects, debt, financing and jurisdictions all matter.
Physical copper is a separate question
The case for copper-producing companies can be assessed through their filings and financial results, but retail physical copper is not established here as a directly comparable, practical holding in the way that gold bullion coins and bars are. Copper is also used as an industrial material, so do not assume that buying and storing it resembles buying a bullion coin. Any proposed physical-copper product needs its own checks on form, quantity, purity, storage and handling requirements, resale market, fees and legal structure.

How do their risks and return drivers compare?
| Exposure | Main return driver | Risks and costs to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Physical gold | Change in the gold price, less the costs of owning and selling the product | Purchase premium, resale spread, delivery, storage and insurance |
| Gold- or copper-mining shares | Company results and equity valuation, influenced by metal prices and the business’s performance | Operating costs, production, projects, financing, jurisdictions and other issuer-specific risks |
| Physical copper | Not established here as a directly comparable retail investment return | Product form, purchase size, purity, handling, storage, resale and fees must be assessed for the specific offering |
| Commodity futures | Changes in the price of a contract with a specified quantity and future delivery date | Leverage, contract terms, margin requirements and account costs; this is not physical ownership or ordinary mining-company equity |
The World Gold Council’s Gold as a strategic asset: 2026 edition describes gold as volatile and notes historical years with gains close to 30% (2010) and losses close to 30% (2013). These are historical illustrations, not a forecast or an expected range; the Council’s cited return chart uses monthly returns and reports data through 31 December 2025.
Why doesn’t a mining share simply track the metal?
Metal prices meet company economics
A higher realized gold or copper price can help a producer’s revenue, but it does not guarantee a higher share price or profit. Results also depend on how much the company produces and sells, the costs of extracting and processing ore, capital spending, debt, hedging and how investors value the company. Operating margins can magnify or soften the effect of a metal-price move. Company-specific news can matter more than the underlying metal on a given day.

Mine and project risks
Barrick Mining Corporation’s 2025 annual information form, filed in 2026, says the company is strongly affected by gold and copper prices and warns that a significant, sustained decline in realized prices could harm profitability and cash flow. It also identifies risks including volatile or unavailable fuel, electricity and materials; infrastructure constraints; long development timelines and cost overruns; permits; political and country conditions; operational breakdowns; labor and community matters; water and environmental issues; currency; capital needs; and financing.
Barrick is an example, not a proxy for every miner. Before judging a particular stock, read that issuer’s current filings for its metal mix, mines and jurisdictions, development projects, debt, hedges and stated risks. A diversified producer and a single-project developer can have very different exposures even when both are described as mining companies.

Read cost measures with their definitions
Barrick describes all-in sustaining costs (AISC) and total cash costs as supplemental non-GAAP measures that do not have standardized IFRS definitions. It cautions against using them alone or as substitutes for IFRS measures. When comparing miners, check each company’s metric definition, scope, reconciliation and treatment of by-product credits, then consider it alongside the financial statements and cash-flow measures. A headline cost figure is not a complete measure of profitability or investment risk.
What does physical gold really cost?
The quoted spot price is a market reference, not necessarily the price a retail buyer pays or the amount they can receive on resale. Dealers may sell bullion above spot and buy it back at a different price. Delivery, storage and insurance can add to the gap between a buyer’s outlay and eventual proceeds. Price appreciation must cover that gap and any other ownership or sale costs before the investment produces a net gain.

The World Gold Council describes bars and coins as a direct physical route, while noting their premium, delivery, storage and insurance considerations. It also describes physical gold exchange-traded funds as vehicles that invest in bullion and let shareholders trade fund shares without personally handling or safeguarding bars. Fund shares are a different legal and custody structure from personally possessed bullion; they should not be described as the same form of ownership.
Questions to ask before buying bullion
- What is the full retail price, including the premium over spot and all commissions or fees?
- What is the dealer’s current buy-back price for the same product, and what would an immediate resale yield?
- What delivery, storage, insurance or administrative charges apply, and how often are they charged?
- If the seller says the metal will be stored, who holds it, what evidence confirms the customer’s ownership, and what are the delivery and withdrawal terms?
- Can the dealer’s history and any relevant state records be checked?
The CFTC and FINRA consumer advisory recommends obtaining fees, commissions, costs and the retail price in writing, comparing the metal’s spot value with the asking price, and asking for the dealer’s buy-back price. It says retail metal dealers are not federally regulated in the United States, so consumers should check relevant state records and dealer history. The advisory reports more than $500 million in alleged precious-metals sales in CFTC cases over the prior decade; that is an aggregate of alleged sales in those cases, not a measure of all market fraud or yearly losses.

How are futures different from owning metal or shares?
A commodity future is a contract specifying a quantity, price and future delivery date. Exchange contracts have set unit sizes and expiration dates and use centralized clearing, according to Investor.gov. This is neither personal possession of bullion nor ordinary equity in a mining company. Futures are leveraged: leverage can magnify losses as well as gains, while account fees and commissions can accumulate.
In the United States, the CFTC regulates commodity futures; the SEC says it does not regulate them. Registration checks for futures professionals are distinct from checks on a retail bullion dealer. The CFTC warns consumers to be wary of high-pressure offers, guaranteed returns, seller-financed metal purchases and claims that metal is being stored for them. Understand whether metal is actually delivered and what the full costs and contract terms are before entering an arrangement. These U.S. regulatory statements should not be assumed to apply in other countries.
How can you compare a specific investment?
- Identify the structure. Is it a coin or bar you take possession of, a fund share backed by bullion, a mining-company share, or a futures contract? The legal rights, custody arrangements and risks differ.
- Map the return mechanism. For bullion, start with the metal price and calculate the effect of the purchase premium, resale price and ownership costs. For a miner, examine how metal prices, production, operating costs, capital needs and company valuation feed into results.
- Read issuer documents for a mining stock. Use the company’s current filings and financial statements to check operations, projects, debt, hedges, jurisdictions, cost definitions and cash flow. Do not assume one miner’s disclosures describe another.
- Get transaction costs in writing. For a physical-metal offer, request the total purchase price, fees, delivery or storage terms, insurance costs and buy-back quote. For a fund or futures account, review its own documents for charges, custody or contract terms.
- Set the comparison period and currency. Returns depend on the dates and currency used. A comparison over one period does not establish what either exposure will return in another.
There is no universal winner in the evidence reviewed. It does not establish a forecast of future returns or a suitable allocation for any individual. Tax treatment, retirement-account eligibility, estate rules and investor protections depend on the jurisdiction and product; the U.S. consumer cautions above are not a substitute for local rules or qualified advice.
