Check the title and plan first, allow adaptive playback time to increase quality, then inspect the network and every device and HDMI link between the streamer and TV. A soft picture alone does not prove the TV is faulty.
First, confirm the stream can be 4K
Check the exact title’s information page and the streaming plan attached to your account. Availability is title- and plan-specific: Netflix says most, but not all, titles are available in HD or 4K, and recommends checking the plan and title labels in its video-quality guidance. If the source is offered only in HD, a 4K TV can scale it to fit the screen, but that does not restore native 4K detail.
Where the service provides a playback-quality setting, set it to Auto or High if appropriate. Sony includes this check in its streaming picture-quality troubleshooting guidance.
Give adaptive playback time, then check the connection at the TV
Some services start playback at a lower resolution and increase it after the stream begins. Netflix says it adapts video quality to connection speed and may lower quality when the connection is slow or unstable. Wait briefly after starting the title before judging its sharpness; if quality never improves, check the connection on the TV or streaming device itself when possible. A phone or laptop speed test elsewhere in the home may not reflect the connection at the playback device.

Use service-specific recommendations as a diagnostic reference, not a guarantee. Netflix currently recommends 15 Mbps or higher for UHD 4K, while Google recommends 20 Mbps for its listed 4K Chromecast and Google TV Streamer setups. These are different providers’ recommendations, not a universal threshold; stability, concurrent network use, service, and device also affect playback. Check the whole path from streamer to screen
The TV, streaming device, and any receiver or soundbar in between must support the resolution and formats you want. For Netflix 4K/HDR, the relevant HDMI connection needs an HDCP 2.2-or-later port and a suitable cable; Netflix specifies Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI for its Premium plan’s 4K/HDR quality. Google’s 4K setup guidance also calls for a high-speed HDMI cable. Check the specific device and service requirements rather than replacing a cable without evidence it is the limiting link.

If a receiver or soundbar sits between the streamer and TV, temporarily connect the streamer directly to the TV. If the picture improves, inspect the intermediary device’s supported formats, ports, and settings.
Verify the TV’s HDMI input settings
Some TVs require an enhanced or HDMI 2.0-or-later mode to be enabled separately for each input. Roku warns that an incompatible HDMI port or incorrect TV HDMI settings can leave a player at 1080p even on a 4K-capable TV. Check the setting for the exact input used, then repeat for any receiver or soundbar in the chain. Menu names and capabilities vary by model, so use the TV and intermediary device manuals. Check HDR separately from resolution
4K and HDR are distinct features. A title may be 4K without HDR, and an HDR label does not prove the stream is 4K. Check the service’s labels and whether HDR is enabled across the device and TV path. Netflix notes that HDR availability and settings vary by device; Google says some TVs require HDR to be enabled in TV settings. A missing HDR indication is not, by itself, evidence that resolution has fallen below 4K.

Once the title, playback quality, device output, and HDMI path check out, softness alone still cannot identify a single cause. The result depends on the specific title, TV, viewing distance, and picture settings. The cited service and manufacturer guidance establishes possible delivery, content-availability, network, and compatibility problems, but does not determine why an unspecified 4K picture looks soft. Avoid assuming that a new cable, faster Wi-Fi, or a new TV will fix it without identifying a limiting part of your setup.
