A local command hook is not itself a model prompt, but hook output or other event data may be processed or added to Claude’s context. Anthropic’s guidance does not quantify token costs or establish that a hook configuration adds exactly zero tokens, so keep context-producing output concise rather than relying on a guaranteed savings figure.
Choose where the hook settings belong
Claude Code supports hooks in user, project, and local project settings. Choose the narrowest scope that matches who should use the hook:
~/.claude/settings.json— user-level settings..claude/settings.json— project settings..claude/settings.local.json— local project settings.
Enterprise-managed policy settings are also available. For the documented settings locations and hook structure, see Anthropic’s Claude Code hooks guide.
Set the event and matcher narrowly
Hooks are defined in a top-level hooks object, keyed by lifecycle event. An event entry can include a matcher and one or more handlers. The event determines when the handler is eligible to run; the matcher narrows which instances of that event trigger it. For tool matchers, capitalization matters: Write matches that tool, while Write|Edit matches either.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, this pattern runs a repository formatter after write or edit operations:
{
"hooks": {
"PostToolUse": [
{
"matcher": "Write|Edit",
"hooks": [
{
"type": "command",
"command": "./scripts/format-changed-file.sh"
}
]
}
]
}
}
Save the JSON in the settings file for the intended scope and adapt the command to a formatter and script that actually exist in your repository. This is an illustrative configuration pattern, not a tested script recipe. Anthropic’s examples and hook guidance describe event and handler configuration in the hooks guide.

Choose the lifecycle event that fits the job
PreToolUse: use when a command should inspect or log a tool action before it executes.PostToolUse: use for follow-up work, such as formatting after a write or edit.SessionStart: can be used to load context at the start of a session.Stop: can be used for deterministic checks at the end of a turn.
These are different trigger points, not interchangeable labels. Pick the event that matches the work, then use its matcher to avoid invoking the handler for unrelated instances. Anthropic discusses these patterns in its hook examples and power-user workflow tips.
Keep hook output from needlessly filling context
A command hook and the information Claude Code may process are separate parts of the behavior. A local command can run when its configured event fires; structured event information and hook output may be processed as JSON or added to Claude’s context. If the handler’s output is context-producing, emit only information Claude needs. Suppress routine success messages and avoid dumping verbose logs unless the model needs them to make a decision.

Narrow matchers also reduce unnecessary handler invocations. This is practical configuration guidance based on the documented matching and output behavior, not a measured token-saving result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What can—and cannot—be claimed about token usage
Anthropic’s reviewed hook documentation does not state a per-hook token cost, quantify the token accounting for hook metadata or event inputs, or guarantee that any configuration is token-neutral. It also publishes no comparison or savings figure for narrower matchers or shorter output. Therefore, configuring a shell command does not by itself establish that a hook adds exactly zero tokens. Keep the trigger scope and returned context minimal, but treat any token effect as unquantified by the cited guidance.
