An iPhone photo can be both captured by its camera sensor and processed on-device. The sensor records light; the camera pipeline may then combine frames and transform the data to create the viewable image. Apple describes computational processing as part of its standard photo-capture pipeline, so a HEIC, JPEG, or ProRAW label—and an image’s appearance—does not by itself prove the file’s complete history.
What “captured” and “processed” mean
These terms describe different stages, not mutually exclusive outcomes. A conventional camera image starts with light recorded by a sensor. The camera software can then combine information from multiple frames and render the result before saving a viewable file. Apple’s developer material describes processed HEIC and JPEG output as ready for display and says the pipeline may use Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, or Night mode to fuse frames. Apple’s ProRAW documentation also explains that computational processing can be part of an image even when RAW information is retained.
- Capture: Light is recorded by the camera sensor.
- Capture-pipeline processing: The iPhone computationally combines or renders image data to produce the saved photo.
- Later editing: A person or app changes the saved image after capture, for example by cropping or adjusting color.
- Photos analysis: Photos can use on-device machine learning for library tasks such as scene classification and photo-quality analysis. That analysis does not, by itself, authenticate how a particular image was captured. Apple’s Photos privacy information describes these library features.
So the useful questions are: Did a camera sensor record the scene? What processing occurred in the capture pipeline or afterward? And is there evidence that the current file preserves that history?
What the file format can—and cannot—tell you
| Format or workflow | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Processed HEIC or JPEG | It is a rendered image output. Apple says its pipeline may computationally process and fuse multiple frames to produce these files. Apple’s developer session on capturing photos explains this workflow. | That no processing occurred, that only one exposure contributed, or that the current file is an unchanged original. |
| Apple ProRAW | It retains RAW information while incorporating iPhone image processing. Apple says ProRAW can work with Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, or Night mode, and provides flexibility when editing exposure, color, and white balance. Apple Support: About Apple ProRAW | That the image is untouched sensor data or that computational processing did not happen. |
| Apple Reference Image | On supported devices, Apple documents a workflow for developing and authenticating reference information and comparing the minimally processed reference image with the conventional photo. Apple Support: About Apple Reference | Universal authentication of arbitrary files, unsupported devices, screenshots, or copies separated from their reference information; those capabilities are not established by Apple’s documentation cited here. |
RAW is therefore a format distinction, not a complete provenance record. An image may retain RAW information and still reflect computational photography; edits, conversions, and sharing can change the file further. A filename or ordinary metadata field may offer clues, but the cited Apple documentation does not describe a universal verifier for the history of any exported iPhone image.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How to examine a sample
- Clarify the question. Decide whether you mean computational processing during capture, later editing, or Photos’ library analysis. These are different operations.
- Check the format. Treat HEIC and JPEG as rendered outputs, and ProRAW as RAW-oriented information combined with iPhone processing—not as proof of an untouched image.
- Check for an Apple Reference Image workflow, if applicable. Apple says supported Reference captures appear in Photos under Media Types > Reference. The image must be developed before it can be viewed or shared, and development requires an internet connection. Apple’s instructions describe the process.
- Compare the reference and conventional photo. Apple says the reference image is minimally processed and can look less contrasty and saturated. Its comparison can show edits such as a crop, color adjustment, or generative-AI adjustment.
- Be cautious with derivatives. A screenshot, recompressed copy, or file separated from its reference information may not preserve the evidence in Apple’s documented workflow. Apple does not establish a universal third-party procedure for authenticating every derivative.
Apple Reference Image: the specific provenance option
Apple documents Reference Image capture for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. In this opt-in workflow, the user captures in Reference mode and develops the image in Photos. Apple says the associated sensor signature and secure timestamps are sent to Private Cloud Compute to develop and authenticate the image. This is evidence for that supported workflow, not a general claim that every iPhone photo can be authenticated.
Apple’s privacy notice says Reference Image is off by default and user controlled. It says the raw photograph and device information may be sent to Private Cloud Compute for authentication, while Apple cannot access the raw photo during authentication; Apple also describes an on-device check when the authenticated image is viewed. This is not accurately summarized as either “everything stays on the device” or “Apple can see the photo.” Apple’s Reference Image privacy notice describes the data flow.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
There is also a sharing risk before development: Apple warns that an undeveloped Reference mode photo may include sensitive device information, such as a serial number, and the full frame regardless of zoom. Develop the reference image and review the available sharing options before sending it.
ProRAW settings and compatibility
Apple says ProRAW is available on iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models running iOS 14.3 or later. To enable it, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and turn on Apple ProRAW & Resolution Control; in Camera, select RAW when capturing. ProRAW is unavailable with Live Photos, Portrait mode, and video. On iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models, Apple documents 12 MP and 48 MP ProRAW options. These are compatibility details, not evidence that ProRAW disables computational processing. Apple Support provides the current instructions and limitations.

Can you turn off all iPhone computational photography?
The Apple documentation cited here describes computational photography as part of the default capture pipeline and does not establish a general setting that disables every computational step. Choosing ProRAW changes the kind of image data saved and gives more editing flexibility, but Apple explicitly says ProRAW combines standard RAW information with iPhone image processing. A format choice should not be treated as proof that all processing has been switched off.
