A PS2’s SCPH number alone cannot confirm that a security chip will work. Record the full model number, identify the motherboard’s GH-xxx marking, and match that exact board revision to an installation diagram for the specific chip variant. Compatibility references show that one console model can contain different boards, and that a chip family may have version-specific limits.
Which modchip works with your PS2 model?
There is no reliable one-line answer based only on “PS2” or a broad SCPH family. Treat compatibility as a match between the console’s exact motherboard revision and the exact chip variant, supported by a wiring diagram for that board. The Modbo V1 installation guide notes that the same console model can be found with multiple board numbers. The Matrix Infinity diagram index is also organized by board and model revision.
Modbo V1 example: SCPH-30001 and GH-004
The Modbo V1 guide documents an SCPH-30001/GH-004 example for NTSC-U/C consoles. It also warns that the earliest V1 board may not support newer Modbo 4.0, 5.0, or 750 variants. That example is not a blanket compatibility promise for every SCPH-30001 or every Modbo chip: verify the board marking and the variant you have.
Do not treat chip-family names as interchangeable
“Modbo” covers multiple versions. A diagram for one chip or a similar board does not establish support for another version. Commercial listings may also use inconsistent naming, and the references here do not verify any particular seller’s current stock or a chip’s authenticity.

How to find your PS2 motherboard revision
- Read the console label. Record the full SCPH model number, including its regional suffix. Use it to narrow the search, not to make the final compatibility decision.
- Identify the GH-xxx marking. The motherboard revision is printed on the board, so confirming it requires opening the console. If you cannot safely open the console or locate the marking, do not infer the board from a nearby model number.
- Find the exact board diagram. Look for a diagram matching the GH-xxx revision and the chip variant. References such as the Matrix Infinity index help locate revision-specific diagrams; they are not manufacturer guarantees.
- Read notes tied to that board. Check the diagram and reliable repair documentation for any board-specific protection or repair requirements before installation.
Check for board-specific protection notes
The Matrix Infinity index flags a Romeo Mod/LA-chip protection note for V9 and V10/V11 boards, and a laser-fix requirement for V12. These are revision-specific leads to verify against the exact diagram and reliable repair documentation—not universal instructions for all PS2 consoles. Do not apply a fix to another revision merely because it is mentioned for a similar model.
Compare compatibility before choosing a chip

Modchip installation is an expert-level, high-risk job
For its BIOS-dumping use case, the PCSX2 BIOS-dumping guide rates modchip installation “Expert” difficulty and “High” risk. It lists documentation, wires, tools, and a soldering iron among the materials. This is a risk assessment for that use case, not a compatibility list or a measured failure rate.

If your goal is to dump a PS2 BIOS for PCSX2, the project recommends FreeMcBoot or FreeDVDBoot as alternatives. Those software-based approaches address that particular task; they are not necessarily substitutes for every reason someone may want a modchip.
If you are replacing an optical-drive part instead
Drive and laser compatibility is a separate model- and revision-specific question. The ConsoleMods PS2 model differences reference documents different Slim drive assemblies and compatible laser families. Do not assume a laser or drive assembly from one PS2 model fits another; compare the exact assembly and model family before buying.

What the references do—and do not—establish
The direct compatibility details cited here come from specialist installation and community references, not a Sony third-party modchip certification. Sony’s Japanese PS2 accessories compatibility page is an accessory table; it does not certify modchips. The available references identify useful board-specific checks but do not establish support for every chip sold under a given name, guarantee an installation outcome, or verify current listings.
