Set Shopify’s default link preview image from Online Store > Preferences. In Social sharing image and SEO, click Add image (or Change image), choose the file, and click Save. This image is the store-wide fallback; product, collection, and blog URLs can use their own featured images instead, and a custom theme can override both.

After saving, check the exact URL you plan to share. Social networks cache previews, so a correct Shopify change may not appear until the platform refreshes its stored data.

Set the default Shopify link preview image

  1. Sign in to your Shopify admin.
  2. Open Online Store > Preferences.
  3. Scroll to Social sharing image and SEO.
  4. Click Add image if the field is empty, or Change image to replace the current file.
  5. Select the image from your device.
  6. Click Save.

Shopify calls this a “social media image.” It supplies a default image when the page being shared does not provide a higher-priority image. The official workflow is documented in Shopify’s social media image guide and the online-store preferences guide.

Know which image Shopify will actually use

The Preferences upload is not a universal override. Shopify documents three possible sources, in priority order:

Priority Source Typical scope What to check
1 Image hard-coded in the theme files Any URL handled by that code Inspect the theme’s social or Open Graph markup if you have a customized theme.
2 Image selected in theme settings Theme-defined pages or layouts Look under the theme editor’s social, sharing, or related settings.
3 Online Store > Preferences > Social sharing image and SEO Store-wide fallback Confirm the file is present and the preference was saved.

For Shopify’s free themes, Shopify says a product, collection, or blog page normally uses that page’s featured image when one exists. Pages without a featured image, such as a homepage or About page, use the store social sharing image. A custom or heavily modified theme may resolve images differently, so do not assume every theme follows the free-theme behavior exactly.

Choose the right image for a fallback

Use an image that still makes sense when it appears beside your store name and URL without page-specific context. A logo with readable padding, a concise value proposition, or a consistent brand graphic is generally easier to recognize than a busy product collage. Keep important text away from the edges because social platforms may crop or resize the preview.

The retrieved Shopify instructions do not provide a social-preview-specific pixel dimension. Shopify’s separate image-upload guide covers general image handling and limits, but it is not a recommended size for link previews. Follow the requirements of the social network where the link will be posted rather than treating a general upload limit as a preview specification.

Test the exact URL, not only the homepage

Open the URL a customer will share and identify its page type. A product URL can select the product’s featured image; a collection URL can select the collection image; and a blog post can select its featured image. Testing only the homepage can therefore give a false impression that the default image controls every link.

  1. Copy the complete public URL, including any path, into a private browser window.
  2. Confirm the page loads without an account or cart session.
  3. Use the relevant social platform’s preview or inspection tool.
  4. Record which image, title, and URL the tool reports before changing anything else.

Shopify names Facebook’s Sharing Debugger, Twitter Card Validator, and LinkedIn Post Inspector as tools for checking previews. Their labels and availability can change, so use the current tool offered by the platform where you will publish the link.

Troubleshoot a wrong or missing preview image

The preview shows a product, collection, or blog image

This is expected when the shared URL has a featured image in Shopify’s free themes. The page-specific image has higher priority than the store preference. To change that preview, edit the featured image on the product, collection, or blog post, or share a URL whose page does not supply one.

The store default seems to be ignored

Review the theme’s configuration and code. Shopify’s documented order is hard-coded theme image first, theme settings image second, and the Preferences image last. In the theme editor, inspect social-sharing settings; in a custom theme, ask whoever maintains it to check the metadata or Open Graph image reference generated for the page.

The Preferences field is blank even though a preview appears

A blank field does not prove that no image is configured. Shopify notes that a theme may use its checkout logo or an image selected under theme settings such as Social media or Social sharing. Check Theme settings > Checkout > Logo and the social settings in the theme editor before assuming the store has no preview image.

Facebook still shows the old image

Facebook saves preview data for a period of time. Shopify recommends opening Facebook Sharing Debugger and refreshing the saved information for the page URL. Shopify does not specify an exact cache duration, so repeated refreshes or waiting may still be necessary after the debugger runs.

LinkedIn, X, or another service shows something different

Each platform fetches and caches page metadata independently. Run the exact URL through that platform’s current inspection tool. Shopify specifically names Twitter Card Validator, Facebook’s Crawler or Sharing Debugger, and LinkedIn Post Inspector; platform names and interfaces can change.

The image works in one theme but not another

Selection behavior documented by Shopify is specifically for its free themes. A paid or custom theme can add its own settings or markup. Compare the theme’s social-sharing controls, publish the intended theme, and then inspect the live URL rather than the preview inside the theme editor.

Separate Shopify configuration from social-platform caching

There are two independent states: Shopify’s current page metadata and the social network’s saved preview. Changing the image fixes only the first state. If an inspector shows the new image but a normal post still shows the old one, the platform’s cache is stale. If the inspector itself shows the old image, investigate Shopify’s page type, theme settings, or theme code.

  • Shopify state: preference saved, featured image present, theme settings active, and live page metadata generated.
  • Platform state: crawler has fetched the URL recently and replaced its stored preview.

Always validate after publishing the change and again after the social platform refreshes its cache. Do not judge success from a previously published post, which may retain its original preview permanently.

When you need different images for different pages

Use page-level featured images where Shopify supports them instead of trying to make the store-wide preference perform that job. The default image is best treated as a fallback for pages such as the homepage, About page, or other templates without a featured image. If a theme supplies a global social image in its settings, document that location for anyone who will maintain the store so future edits do not appear to have no effect.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to verify what a public Shopify page looks like before sharing it, ScreenshotNeo can capture the rendered URL through one request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, so it does not replace the Shopify setting; use Shopify admin to choose the image, then use a capture to check the live result at a chosen viewport or device.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the capture. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server supplies take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. One thousand screenshots per month are free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is included on every plan.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication and all capture options. Replace the example URL with your store or the exact product, collection, or blog URL you want to inspect.

Operational checklist before sharing a link

  • Save the image in Online Store > Preferences > Social sharing image and SEO.
  • Check whether the URL has a higher-priority featured image.
  • Review theme social settings and custom code if the fallback is not used.
  • Inspect the exact live URL with the platform where you will post it.
  • Refresh the platform’s crawler or debugger after changing the image.
  • Verify again from a clean browser or an automated capture, not from an old social post.
