You can use one Apple Account for iCloud, iMessage, Photos, and other services while using a different Apple Account for App Store and media purchases. On Apple’s newer support pages, “Apple ID” is called “Apple Account”; the email address, password, and sign-in process remain the same.
On an iPhone running iOS 17, the App Store account is controlled from Media & Purchases. You do not need to sign out of iCloud or remove the main account from the iPhone.
Switch the App Store to another Apple ID
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen.
- Tap Media & Purchases.
- Tap Sign Out.
- Tap Sign Out again to confirm.
- Tap Media & Purchases again.
- Tap Not [your name]?
- Enter the email address or phone number and password for the other Apple Account.
After authentication, the second account becomes the account used for App Store downloads, updates, and other Apple media purchases. The iPhone’s main Apple Account remains signed in for iCloud and other services.
Check which account the App Store is using
To confirm the active purchase account, open:
Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account

Authenticate if prompted. The account shown there is the account currently used for Apple media and App Store purchases. Apple also displays the purchase account in the Media & Purchases section when it differs from the account used for iCloud.
You do not need to sign out of iCloud
Changing the account under Media & Purchases is separate from signing out of the iPhone’s main Apple Account. Do not use Settings > [your name] > Sign Out unless you intend to remove the primary account from the device.
For this task, you can leave iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, Photos, Contacts, and other services connected to the original account. Signing out of the purchase section only changes the account used for Apple media and App Store transactions.
What happens to existing apps and purchases?
Switching accounts does not combine or transfer purchases. Every app, song, film, book, or other purchase remains attached to the Apple Account that originally obtained it.

If an app requests the old account during an update, signing into the new account will not change that ownership. You may need to keep using the old account for that app, or obtain the app again with the new account where appropriate.
Using two accounts with Family Sharing
Family Sharing has an additional account requirement. Apple recommends that the account used for Family Sharing and the account used under Media & Purchases match.

On iOS 17, check the Family Sharing purchase account here:
Settings > Family > [your name] > Purchases > Apple Account for Purchases
If the account is different, Apple may show Share using secondary Apple Account. Tap that option and enter the alternate account’s email address or password.
Family Sharing does not share every type of content. Individual Apple Music and Apple One plans are excluded, as are in-app purchases from apps that do not participate in Family Sharing. Also, if a family member hides a purchased app, that app—and its in-app purchases and subscriptions—is hidden from the entire family group.
When Apple says the iPhone is associated with another account
Signing in with a different purchase account and associating a device with an Apple Account are related but different actions. Apple permits an Apple Account to have up to 10 associated devices, including no more than 5 computers.
You may see a message such as:
“This device is associated with another Apple Account. You cannot associate this device with another Apple Account for [number] days.”

The waiting period can be as long as 90 days. This commonly matters when switching accounts for previously purchased media or other account-linked content.
To remove the current device association, use:
Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Remove This Device
If the device cannot be removed, Apple instructs you to sign out of the Apple Account on that device and try again. The waiting period may still apply, so removing the device does not necessarily bypass the 90-day restriction.

Migrate Purchases is not required to use a different App Store account temporarily. It is a separate feature for consolidating purchases from a secondary Apple Account into a primary Apple Account.
The migration option is located at:
Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Migrate Purchases
It appears only when the accounts are eligible. Apple’s current instructions require the iPhone or iPad to be updated to the latest available version of iOS or iPadOS, so migration should not be treated as an iOS 17-only feature.

Important migration requirements include:
- Two-factor authentication enabled on both accounts.
- The same purchase country or region on both accounts.
- No remaining balance on the secondary account.
- Completed rentals and pre-orders.
- A valid payment method.
Migration is unavailable in India and does not work with several account states, including child accounts created through Family Sharing, locked or disabled accounts, deleted or deactivated accounts, certain employer or volume-purchase accounts, and secondary accounts currently being used for TestFlight testing.
After migration, the secondary account can no longer be used for Media & Purchases. Deleting that account also removes access to its purchases. Use migration only when you intend to consolidate the accounts, not simply when you need to download an app from another account.
Common problems after switching

FAQ
Can I use a different Apple ID for the App Store without changing iCloud?
Yes. Sign out only from Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases, then sign in with the other account. Your iCloud account and other Apple services remain connected.
Will switching App Store accounts delete my purchases?
No. Purchases stay linked to the account that made them. However, downloaded Apple media can be removed from the iPhone when you sign out, and you may need to sign back into the owning account to download it again.
Why does an app ask for my old Apple ID after I switch accounts?
The app was likely obtained with the old account. App ownership is not transferred when you change the Media & Purchases account, so updates or redownloads can require the original account.
Can I keep two Apple IDs signed in to the App Store at the same time?
Only one account is active for Media & Purchases at a time. You can switch between them, but you must sign out of the current purchase account before signing in with the other one.

What is the difference between Apple ID and Apple Account?
Apple renamed Apple ID to Apple Account. Existing email addresses, phone numbers, passwords, and credentials continue to work.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases to change the App Store account. Sign out there, choose Not [your name]?, and sign in with the other Apple Account. Leave the main iCloud account alone, and remember that purchases remain tied to the account that originally made them.
