ABBYY lists support for 198 recognition languages, with dictionary support for 53 of them. It accepts PDF, PDF/A, PDF/UA, TIFF, JPEG, JPEG 2000, PNG, BMP, and GIF files. Output formats include PDF, PDF/A, and PDF/UA.
Recognition runs locally, which is useful for confidential invoices, contracts, research papers, and other documents that should not be uploaded to a web service. The main limitation is that the Mac edition runs on Apple Silicon through Rosetta 2 rather than being described by ABBYY as native Apple-Silicon code. ABBYY lists macOS 12 or later, 4 GB of RAM, and roughly 3 GB of available disk space.
The current Mac edition also does not provide native Mac handwriting recognition. If handwritten notes are central to your workflow, Prizmo is a better candidate.

2. Apple Preview and Live Text
Best free OCR option for occasional use.
macOS Live Text is built into macOS Monterey 12 and later. It can recognize text in Photos, Preview, Safari, and Quick Look, so you may already have a useful OCR tool installed.
A simple workflow is:
- Open a photo or scanned page in Preview, Photos, Safari, or Quick Look.
- Drag across the recognized text.
- Press
Command-C, then paste the text into Notes, Pages, a text editor, or another application.
To capture text visible elsewhere on the screen, press Shift-Command-4, select the relevant area, and open the captured image where Live Text can recognize it.
Live Text is excellent for a receipt number, a short quotation, an address, or text in a screenshot. It is not a replacement for a document-OCR application. Large documents, complex layouts, tables, and batch scanning are outside its main workflow. Preview can display and interact with recognized text, but it is not a full editor for reconstructing existing PDF text.
Do not assume that opening every scanned PDF in Preview automatically creates a fully searchable PDF. That behavior is not established as a universal feature by Apple’s current documentation.

The basic command is:

Tesseract does not recognize handwriting, low-quality scans can produce gibberish, and multi-column documents may receive the wrong reading order. OCRmyPDF 17.10.0 no longer strictly requires Ghostscript. The default automatic rasterizer prefers pypdfium2 when available, and you can select one explicitly:

ocrmypdf --rasterizer ghostscript input.pdf output.pdfPDF/A output may be larger and can remove or disable active content such as JavaScript and some hyperlinks. Image cleanup options such as --remove-background and --clean-final can also remove legitimate content or create artifacts, so inspect the finished PDF.

- Cons: Command-line only, no handwriting recognition, weaker layout handling, requires language packs and setup.

4. Adobe Acrobat Studio
Best for OCR inside a professional PDF suite.
Adobe’s current higher-tier product is called Adobe Acrobat Studio, introduced in 2025. It combines Acrobat Pro features with Adobe Express Premium and additional AI tools. Older articles may call the product Acrobat Pro DC, so check the name and plan shown in your Adobe account before subscribing.

Acrobat’s advantage is not OCR alone. It is the surrounding PDF workflow: editing, redaction, signing, comparison, form work, and document manipulation. If you already use Adobe tools and need to turn scans into editable or searchable PDFs as part of a business process, Acrobat is a logical choice.
The trade-off is cost and weight. Current comparisons describe the Mac application as relatively heavy and subscription-dependent. The reported Acrobat Studio offer is approximately $35 per month or $300 per year. The free Acrobat Reader is useful for reading and filling PDFs, but it does not include the full paid OCR and PDF-editing feature set.

Adobe’s interface changes between releases and plans. Avoid relying on old instructions that promise a particular Tools > Enhance Scans > Recognize Text path; verify the commands in the Acrobat build you have installed.

5. Readdle PDF Expert
Best for a polished Mac PDF editor with built-in OCR.
PDF Expert is a simpler alternative to Acrobat for users who primarily work on a Mac. Its OCR is integrated into the PDF viewer and editor, so you can recognize a scanned document and then select, copy, highlight, search, or manually correct recognized text.
Readdle documents two current ways to start OCR:
- Open the PDF and wait for the message “There is no selectable text on this page.” Click Recognize.
- Alternatively, click Scan & OCR in the toolbar and choose Recognize text.
Choose the document language, select the pages to process, and click Apply. PDF Expert supports more than 20 OCR languages, including English, German, French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Portuguese.
OCR can make best-effort guesses for unclear words. Treat those guesses as text to proofread, not as guaranteed transcription—especially when the scan is blurred, skewed, or printed in an unusual typeface.

How to choose OCR software for a Mac
For occasional text extraction
