On Windows 11 24H2 and newer, Microsoft has moved the main battery and energy controls into Settings > System > Power & battery. The most useful starting point is Energy recommendations, where Windows groups settings that can reduce power consumption on your particular PC.
You do not need Command Prompt, PowerShell, Registry edits, or ViveTool to enable these features. The available controls depend on your Windows version, hardware, display, drivers, and existing settings.
Check your Windows version first
The instructions below apply primarily to Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer. Microsoft documents a different, older layout for Windows 11 24H1 and earlier, where some battery controls appear under Settings > System > Battery.
To check your version, press Win+R, type winver, and press Enter. You can also open Settings > System > About and check Windows specifications.

Windows 11 version 26H1 was released on February 10, 2026 for selected new devices. Microsoft says it is not offered as an in-place upgrade to existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs, so do not assume that every Windows 11 computer can be upgraded to 26H1 through Windows Update.
Apply Windows 11’s energy recommendations
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Power & battery.
- Open Energy recommendations.
- Select Apply all, or apply individual recommendations one at a time.
Depending on the computer, recommendations may include lowering display brightness, shortening the time before the screen turns off, shortening sleep timers, and enabling other settings that Windows identifies as using more-than-average power.
This page is not a universal switch that activates every energy-saving feature. It applies only the recommendations currently available for that device. A desktop PC, a laptop with no battery detected, and a laptop with a high-refresh-rate display may show different options.
If Energy recommendations is missing
- Confirm that the PC is running Windows 11 24H2 or newer.
- Install available Windows updates and restart the computer.
- Check whether Windows detects the battery under Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Look for the individual controls described below. Some settings may still be available even when the recommendations page has little or nothing to suggest.
Turn on Energy saver and set its battery threshold
Windows 11 uses Energy saver as the current name for the battery-saving feature. Older guides may call it Battery Saver; that is older terminology.
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Energy saver.
- Set the battery percentage beside Turn energy saver on when the battery level is at.
To enable it immediately, turn on Energy saver on the same page. You can also open the taskbar’s battery control and select the Energy saver quick setting.

Energy saver automatically manages system processes and power usage to balance performance with longer battery life. It can therefore be useful when you need extra runtime, but it may not be appropriate during demanding work where maximum performance is more important.
Find apps using significant battery power
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Select Battery usage.
- Review Battery usage per app.
The list can identify apps using substantial power, including apps that continue working in the background. Use it to investigate an unexpectedly short battery runtime rather than disabling background activity for every app at once.

- In Battery usage, find the app you want to control.
- Select More options (…) > Manage background activity.
- On the app’s settings page, change Let this app run in the background.
- Choose one of the available options: Always, Power optimized (recommended), or Never.
Power optimized is the sensible default for most apps. Use Never for an app that does not need to refresh while you are not using it. Keep at least one necessary app set to Always if the device must maintain connectivity and receive app updates or notifications while apps are inactive. Setting every supported app to Never can stop background notifications and updates.
Not every app supports this control. If Manage background activity is not present in the app’s More options menu, Windows does not expose background-activity management for that app through this interface.
Choose a less demanding power mode
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Find Power mode.
- Select the mode that best fits your needs, such as a power-saving option when available.
Power mode is not available on every PC. Its presence and choices depend on the device’s hardware and the manufacturer’s firmware or software.

Shorten screen and sleep timers
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Screen and sleep.
- Adjust On battery power, turn off my screen after.
- Adjust When plugged in, turn off my screen after, if required.
- Set the corresponding sleep options for battery and plugged-in operation.
A practical setup is a shorter screen-off timer on battery and a longer timer when plugged in. Sleep saves more power than leaving the display on, but a very short timer can interrupt reading, presentations, or long-running tasks.

Lower the display refresh rate
A high refresh rate can make scrolling and animation look smoother, but it can also increase power use. If the display and driver provide more than one refresh rate:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select Advanced display.
- Choose a lower value under Choose a refresh rate.
If you do not see the refresh-rate selector or only one value is listed, Windows is not being offered another rate by the display or its driver. An external monitor may also expose different choices from the laptop’s built-in screen.
Assign an app to the power-saving GPU
Some laptops have both an integrated GPU and a more powerful discrete GPU. Assigning a suitable app to the power-saving GPU can reduce battery use, although graphics-heavy applications may need the higher-performance GPU.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the app.
- Select Options.
- Choose Power saving, then select Save.
If the app is not listed, use the option to add its desktop application before changing its graphics preference. The exact choices Windows presents depend on the GPUs and drivers installed in the PC.

What to do when a setting is unavailable

Do not try to convert a PC between S3 sleep and Modern Standby by changing a BIOS setting. Modern Standby is defined by the device’s hardware, and Microsoft does not support switching between those power models in Windows without a complete operating-system reinstall.

Where are the new battery settings in Windows 11?
On Windows 11 24H2 and newer, open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery. The main grouped page is Energy recommendations, with separate pages for Energy saver, Battery usage, Screen and sleep, and other controls.
Is Energy recommendations a single battery-saving switch?
No. It applies the recommendations currently available for your device. Windows may suggest brightness, screen timeout, sleep, or other changes, but the list varies by hardware, display, battery presence, and current settings.
Do I need a command to enable these features?
No. Microsoft’s supported instructions use the Windows Settings interface. No Command Prompt, PowerShell, Registry, or ViveTool command is required for Energy recommendations, Energy saver, Battery usage, or background-activity management.
Why can’t I find Battery Saver?

Will disabling background activity stop notifications?
It can. Microsoft says that if apps must receive updates or notifications while inactive, at least one required app must be set to Always. Setting every supported app to Never can prevent background updates and notifications.
Can I enable Energy recommendations on Windows 11 23H2 or 24H1?
Do not assume so. Microsoft documents the Energy recommendations path in its Windows 11 24H2-or-later instructions. Older releases use legacy guidance and may place battery controls under Settings > System > Battery.
The Bottom Line
For a current Windows 11 PC, start at Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations and select Apply all or choose individual changes. Then review Battery usage, limit unnecessary background activity, set sensible screen and sleep timers, and use a lower refresh rate or the power-saving GPU where your hardware supports it.
