Not as a permanent free copy. Forza Horizon 5 is sold through the Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Steam. The legitimate way to download it without buying the game separately is to use an eligible Xbox Game Pass subscription. That gives you access while the subscription and the game entitlement remain active; it does not give you permanent ownership.
Be cautious with websites promising a “full free download,” cracked installer, or product key. There is no verified official method to download and permanently own Forza Horizon 5 for $0.

What “free” means for Forza Horizon 5
| Option | What you get | Permanent ownership? |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Pass | Download and play while your eligible subscription and entitlement are active | No |
| Microsoft Store or Xbox purchase | A digital license for the account that bought the game | Yes, subject to Microsoft’s digital-license rules |
| Steam purchase | A Steam license, with Xbox Live account linking required | Yes, subject to Steam’s license terms |
| Unofficial download or crack | Unverified software and an illegal copy | No legitimate license |
The official Xbox listing presents purchase and Game Pass options. Its Download Now button is entitlement-dependent: it does not mean that every visitor can download the full game for free.

How to download it with Xbox Game Pass
You need an eligible Game Pass subscription, a Microsoft account, and a compatible Xbox console or Windows PC. The game is also available through supported Xbox Cloud Gaming access, where offered by the applicable Game Pass plan and region.

On a Windows PC
- Sign in to the Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account that has the Game Pass entitlement.
- Open Microsoft Store from the Windows Start menu.
- Search for Forza Horizon 5 and select the official game listing.
- Choose Download, Install, or the Game Pass option shown for your account.
- After installation, launch the game and sign in when prompted. Xbox services may require the same or a linked Microsoft/Xbox account.
Microsoft’s support instructions use this general route: open the Store app, search for the game, and select its listing. An item that is not installed may show a Download icon.
On an Xbox console
- Open the Microsoft Store on the console.
- Search for Forza Horizon 5.
- Open the game page and select the Game Pass installation option if your account is eligible.
- Allow the download to complete, then start the game from My games & apps.
The Xbox mobile app has also documented a Download to Console option for remotely starting an installation. App labels and layouts can change, so use the current Store or Xbox app interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Can I download the Steam version with Game Pass?
Do not assume that a Game Pass entitlement unlocks the Steam edition. Steam lists Forza Horizon 5 as its own product and requires a third-party Xbox Live account link. A Microsoft Store or Xbox Game Pass installation is not documented as granting the separate Steam license.
If you want the Steam edition, open the Forza Horizon 5 Steam page, purchase it through Steam, install it from your Steam library, and link the required Xbox account when prompted.

PC requirements before you install
The current Steam listing gives the following requirements. The Microsoft Store version may have its own compatibility checks, but these figures are useful when assessing whether a Windows PC is suitable.
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher, 64-bit | Windows 10 version 18362.0 or higher, 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel i5-4460 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 | Intel i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Nvidia GTX 970, AMD RX 470, or Intel Arc A380 | Nvidia GTX 1070, AMD RX 590, or Intel Arc A750 |
| DirectX | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 110 GB available | 110 GB available |
| Internet | Broadband internet | Broadband internet |
Keep more than the stated 110 GB free if possible. Updates and temporary installation files can require additional working space.
Why the Download button may not work
Your account has no entitlement
If the signed-in account does not own the game and does not have an eligible active Game Pass subscription, selecting Download may lead to a purchase screen or fail to provide installation access. Check the account shown in the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Xbox services.

Xbox console, Microsoft Store PC, and Steam access are not interchangeable in every situation. A Game Pass entitlement may offer the Xbox/Microsoft ecosystem version without granting the Steam product.

The PC is not supported
Microsoft notes that Store availability can vary by device. A game may appear in search but still be unavailable for a particular PC because of Windows version, hardware, region, or device compatibility.
There is not enough storage
Forza Horizon 5 requires 110 GB of available storage according to the Steam listing. If the drive is nearly full, clear space before starting the installation rather than relying on the installer to report the problem late.
The subscription has ended
Microsoft describes Store games as using device-based and user-based licenses, with access governed by the applicable digital-game or Game Pass rules. If a Game Pass subscription expires or the title is no longer available under your entitlement, the installed files do not become a permanently owned copy. You may need to renew access or purchase the game.
What to avoid
- “Forza Horizon 5 free full version” download sites offering an executable outside Microsoft, Xbox, or Steam.
- Cracks, torrents, key generators, and modified installers.
- Offers claiming that a random product key permanently activates the game for free.
- Guides that treat a visible Download Now button as proof that no purchase or subscription is required.
These downloads can contain malware, steal browser or Microsoft account credentials, or install an altered game client. They also do not provide a valid game license.

Bottom line
You can download and play Forza Horizon 5 without buying it separately through eligible Xbox Game Pass access. You cannot legitimately download and permanently own the full game for free. For permanent access, purchase it through the Microsoft Store, Xbox, or Steam; for temporary access, use the supported Game Pass route and keep the subscription entitlement active.
FAQ
Is Forza Horizon 5 free-to-play?
No. The official Xbox listing supports purchase or access through Xbox Game Pass; it does not list the full game as permanently free-to-play.
Can I keep Forza Horizon 5 after cancelling Game Pass?
