If Microsoft Teams keeps asking you to sign in, do not repeatedly enter the password at random. The prompt is often caused by opening Teams before connecting to a required VPN, damaged New Teams app data, a stale Microsoft 365 account, or an organization policy that needs administrator action.
Try these fixes in order. Keep the required work network or VPN connected while testing, and note any sign-in status code Teams displays in the lower-left corner.
1. Connect to the required network, then sign in again
Some organizations allow Microsoft 365 sign-ins only from a company network or VPN. Microsoft also lists sign-in-risk checks, forced password changes, and device-compliance requirements as possible reasons Teams repeatedly requests authentication.

- Close or quit Teams.
- Connect to your organization’s required VPN or network.
- Open Teams without switching networks.
- Select the Sign in banner or button.
- Enter your work or school credentials and complete MFA or any other prompts.
Microsoft recommends connecting to the required VPN or network before opening Teams. Avoid moving from the VPN to a home, guest, or mobile network while Teams is running.

If the sign-in window does not appear, select the Teams icon in the Windows notification area. It may have a dot or exclamation mark. If that does not open the prompt, right-click the Teams icon, select Quit, and start Teams again.
This fix is especially likely to help if Teams works on the company network but repeatedly asks for credentials at home.
2. Update Teams—or use the web app
An outdated client can get stuck in an authentication loop. In Teams, select your profile picture and choose Check for updates, if that option is available. Restart the app after the update completes.
Do not look for a switch back to classic Teams as a solution. Microsoft ended support for the classic Teams client on July 1, 2024, and ended its availability on July 1, 2025. The corresponding VDI support ended October 1, 2024, with availability ending July 1, 2025.
If the current desktop client will not install or update, open Teams on the web in a supported browser. The web app is also a useful test:

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- If the web app works but the desktop app does not, the local Teams installation or its saved account data is probably the problem.
- If the web app also keeps requesting sign-in, investigate the account, VPN, browser session, or organization policy instead of repeatedly reinstalling Teams.
3. Reset the New Teams cache
Corrupt local app data can prevent Teams from reusing a successful sign-in. New Teams has a supported reset option in Windows.
Windows: use the built-in reset
- Type settings in the Windows search box and open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Teams.
- Find New Microsoft Teams.
- Select the … button on the right and choose Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Reset.
- Start Teams and sign in again.
Resetting the app deletes Teams app data, including personalization settings. It does not change your Microsoft 365 password.
Windows: delete the New Teams cache files
If the reset option is unavailable or does not solve the loop:
- Right-click the Teams icon on the taskbar and select Quit.
- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Paste this path into the Run box:
%userprofile%appdatalocalPackagesMSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalCacheMicrosoftMSTeams
- Select OK.
- Delete all files and folders in the directory.
- Open Teams again.
The first launch may take longer because Teams rebuilds its cache. Avoid using the commonly repeated %appdata%MicrosoftTeams path as a universal New Teams fix. Microsoft identifies that location with classic Teams; New Teams uses the reset option or the MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe path above.
macOS: clear the New Teams containers
- Quit Teams from the Dock, or press Command (⌘)-Q.
- Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
- Run each command separately:
rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams
rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2
- Restart Teams and sign in.
4. Sign out and remove stale account information
Teams can retain a stale session, particularly after a password change, account migration, or use of multiple Microsoft 365 tenants.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Open Teams.
- Select your profile picture at the top of the app.
- Select Sign out.
- Close and reopen Teams, then select the correct account.
Signing out removes information associated with that account from Teams until you sign in again. It does not sign you out of other Microsoft applications, and signing out on one device does not sign you out on your other devices.

| Situation | Path | Important warning |
|---|---|---|
| Windows personal Microsoft account | Start > Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts. Select the account and choose Remove. | Remove only the account you intend to disconnect. |
| Windows work or school account | Start > Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. Select the account, choose Manage, then select Sign out everywhere under Overview. | This is not limited to Teams. It can affect other applications and services using the work account. |
| macOS account credentials | Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access. Right-click the account and select Delete [account name]. | You may need to authenticate again in other Microsoft apps. |
Do not disconnect a managed work or school account casually. Complete removal may require your IT administrator. In a browser with several Microsoft accounts, select the Microsoft Teams account before choosing Sign out.
5. Use the status code to find the real cause
When the problem continues, Teams may show a sign-in status code in the bottom-left corner of the window. Record it before closing the prompt and give it to your IT administrator if necessary.
| Status code | What it usually indicates | What to try |
|---|---|---|
0xCAA20003 |
Authorization problem | Check that the device date, time, and time zone are correct. Incorrect values can prevent secure HTTPS connections. |
0xCAA20004 |
The request needs approval from a resource owner or authorization server | Ask IT to check the organization’s Microsoft Entra ID policies. |
0xCAA70004 |
Server or proxy not found | Check for a misconfigured proxy or HTTPS inspection tool such as Fiddler. IT may need to correct or disable it. |
0xCAA70007 |
The connection was interrupted during a download | Test the internet connection and check whether a firewall or another application is blocking Teams. |
0xCAA82EE2 |
Request timed out | Check the connection, firewall, and security software. |
0xCAA82EE7 |
The server name could not be resolved | Check internet access, DNS, firewall rules, and proxy settings. |
0xCAA90018 |
Incorrect credentials | Retry with the Microsoft 365 email address and password, not different Windows credentials. |
Modern authentication normally uses single sign-on, so Teams should not need your password on every launch. A repeated prompt can therefore point to a network requirement, sign-in-risk check, password-change requirement, device-compliance policy, proxy, credential mismatch, or damaged local state.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
If the code indicates an Entra ID policy, device requirement, password breach, or sign-in risk, there may be nothing useful to change locally. Contact the organization’s IT administrator and provide the exact code, your account type, whether you were connected to the VPN, and whether Teams on the web worked.
Check that you are using the right Teams account
A personal Microsoft account and a work or school account can produce different Teams experiences. If you sign in with the wrong one, you may not see work or school assignments, meeting notes, recordings, calendars, or the Teams app in the left navigation.
Select your profile picture and inspect the account or organization shown. Sign out, then choose the work or school account supplied by your organization. If the account is not listed, select the option to use another account rather than entering the work address into a personal-account session.

Will clearing the Teams cache delete my chats or files?
The supported reset clears local Teams app data and personalization settings. Your chats and files are stored in Microsoft 365, but you will need to sign in again and Teams may take longer to start while it rebuilds local cache files.

Can I fix a Teams sign-in loop by installing classic Teams?
No. Classic Teams support ended July 1, 2024, and its availability ended July 1, 2025. Use the current Teams client or the Teams web app in a supported browser.
Why does Teams work in a browser but not in the desktop app?
That usually points to the desktop app’s local cache, stored account state, or installation rather than a general account failure. Sign out, reset New Teams, or clear its current cache paths.
When should I contact IT about Teams sign-in problems?
Contact IT when the issue involves a required VPN, Microsoft Entra ID approval, sign-in risk, password breach, device compliance, proxy configuration, or a status code that remains after the local fixes. Include the exact status code.
The Bottom Line
Start Teams only after connecting to the required VPN or network, then update it and reset the New Teams app data if necessary. Signing out can remove stale account state, but organization policies, proxy failures, and device-compliance checks require IT support. Keep the Teams status code: it is usually the fastest clue to why the sign-in loop continues.
