Windows 11 gives you several ways to move from one signed-in account to another without closing the first user’s programs. This is called Fast User Switching: the first session stays active in the background while the second user signs in.
That differs from Sign out, which closes the current session and its applications. Use one of the methods below when you want to leave another user’s work open.
1. Switch accounts from the Start menu
The Start menu is usually the quickest option on a personal Windows 11 PC.

- Select your account name or profile picture near the lower-left corner.
- Select More (…).
- Choose the account you want to use.
- Enter that account’s password, PIN, or Windows Hello credential.
Windows takes you to the selected account’s sign-in screen. The original user remains signed in, and open applications continue running.

On some organization-managed computers, the account menu may show a separate Switch user command. The current Windows 11 account manager does not always display other accounts immediately after you select the profile picture. On newer builds, you may need to open the More menu first.
2. Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete
The Windows security screen provides a reliable alternative when the Start menu account list is difficult to find.
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
- Select Switch user.
- Choose the account you want to use on the sign-in screen.
- Enter its password, PIN, or other configured sign-in method.
The same screen also contains options for locking the PC, signing out, changing a password, and opening Task Manager. Be careful to choose Switch user, not Sign out: signing out ends the current session and closes its applications.

Locking Windows does not switch accounts by itself. It protects the current session and displays the sign-in screen; you then select the other account manually.
- Press Windows key + L.
- At the sign-in screen, select the other account’s name or picture.
- Enter the account’s credentials.
If the account is not listed, select an available account tile and look for Other user, where that option is supported. You can then enter the required account details.

The accounts shown on the sign-in screen depend on the accounts configured on the computer and, on work or school devices, the organization’s policies. Locking leaves the first user signed in, so their open programs and unsaved work remain in that session.
4. Use the classic Shut Down Windows dialog
The traditional desktop shutdown dialog includes a Switch user action. This method is useful when the Start menu and security screen do not expose the option clearly.
- Show the desktop. Press Windows key + D if necessary.
- Press Alt+F4.
- In the Shut Down Windows dialog, open the action list.
- Select Switch user.
- Select OK.
- Choose the account and sign in.
Make sure the desktop is active before pressing Alt+F4. If an application window has focus, the shortcut normally closes that application instead. On some laptops, you may need to press Alt+Fn+F4.
Also check the selected action before confirming. Some current Windows 11 installations remember or default to Switch user rather than Shut down. Do not press Enter automatically unless the displayed action is the one you intend to perform.
Which switching method should you use?

Switch user versus sign out
These commands have different effects:
- Switch user: leaves the current account signed in. Its applications, windows, and session remain active while another user works.
- Sign out: closes applications and ends the current session. Unsaved changes may be lost, and the user must reopen programs after signing in again.
- Lock: protects the current session and displays the sign-in screen. It does not end the session or switch to a different account by itself.
Fast User Switching can use additional memory and system resources because the first user’s programs remain open. If the PC is low on memory, or nobody needs to return to the first session, signing out may be more appropriate.

Why is “Switch user” missing?
The option may be unavailable for several normal reasons:

- Only one usable account exists. Windows may return to the sign-in screen, but there is no second user session to select.
- Fast User Switching is disabled by policy. On a managed PC, an administrator can enable Hide entry points for Fast User Switching. This can remove switching controls from the sign-in screen, Start menu, and Task Manager.
- The account is not configured on the PC. A user cannot switch to an account that has not been added or made available for sign-in.
- The current interface is different. On newer Windows 11 builds, other accounts may be inside the Start menu’s More menu rather than displayed directly.
On Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise, an administrator can check the related local policy at:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon > Hide entry points for Fast User Switching
This setting applies to the computer, not just one individual account. If it is enabled on a work or school PC, contact the organization’s administrator rather than changing policy settings.
Windows 11 Home does not include the Local Group Policy Editor, so gpedit.msc is not the appropriate troubleshooting route there. Try the other switching methods first. On a managed Home device, restrictions may instead be enforced through device-management tools.

What access does switching provide?
Switching accounts does not give one user automatic access to another user’s private files, settings, or permissions. Each person signs in under their own account and receives only the access allowed by that account.
If another user needs to work with shared documents, place them in a shared location and configure the appropriate permissions. Do not assume that leaving an account signed in makes its private files available to the next person.

Does switching users close open programs?
No. Fast User Switching leaves the first user signed in and keeps that user’s applications running. The programs may still consume memory and other system resources.
What is the difference between locking and switching users?
Windows key + L locks the current session and shows the sign-in screen. You must then select another account and sign in. Locking alone does not switch users.
Why can’t I see another account in Windows 11?
The account may not be configured on the PC, the account list may be under Start > your profile picture > More (…), or an organization may have disabled Fast User Switching by policy.

Can I switch users if there is only one account?
Windows may still show a Switch user command, but it cannot create a different user session when only one usable account exists.
Will switching users let me open another user’s private files?
No. The second user signs in with separate permissions. Switching accounts does not bypass file or account security.
The Bottom Line
For most people, use Start > your profile picture > More (…) and select the other account. If that menu is unavailable, try Ctrl+Alt+Delete > Switch user or press Windows key + L and choose an account at the sign-in screen. The desktop Alt+F4 dialog is a useful fourth option, but verify its selected action before confirming.
If every method is missing the option, Fast User Switching may be disabled by an administrator—or there may simply be no second usable account on the PC.
