Windows 11 does not include a universal Function Keys switch. The behavior of F1–F12 is normally controlled by the keyboard, its firmware, UEFI/BIOS settings, or a manufacturer utility.
In practice, “disable the function keys” usually means changing which action happens when you press a top-row key:

Perixx PERIBOARD-416 Wired Mini USB Keyboard with 4 Hubs - X Type Scissor Keys - Detachable USB-C... | $34.99 | Buy on Amazon |
- Function-key mode: F1–F12 perform standard commands, while you hold Fn for volume, brightness, playback, and similar controls.
- Media-key mode: the icons printed on the keys work directly, while you hold Fn to send F1–F12.
Try the keyboard shortcut first. If your keyboard has no lock shortcut, use its UEFI/BIOS setting or the manufacturer’s control software.
1. Try the keyboard’s Fn Lock shortcut
Many laptops let you switch the default behavior without opening Windows Settings. Look for a padlock or Fn Lock symbol, commonly printed on the Esc key or another function key.

| Keyboard or model type | Shortcut | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Acer notebooks with an Fn-lock symbol on Esc | Fn + Esc | Press the combination again to reverse the setting. |
| Documented Lenovo models | Fn + Esc | The shortcut enables or disables Fn Lock on supported models. |
| Microsoft All-in-One Media Keyboard | Fn + Caps Lock | Press the combination again to switch back. |
| Microsoft keyboards with an F Lock key | Press F Lock | The indicator determines whether standard or alternate commands are active. |
These combinations are not universal. Fn + Esc works only when the keyboard manufacturer has implemented it. If there is no lock icon or the shortcut does nothing, check the model’s manual or move to the firmware method below.
2. Change Function Key Behavior in UEFI/BIOS
If the keyboard has no Fn Lock shortcut, the setting may be stored in firmware rather than Windows. The label and location vary by manufacturer. Common names include Function Key Behavior, Action Keys Mode, Hotkey Mode, Function Key, and Multimedia Key.
Open UEFI from Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- At the recovery screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings.
- Select Restart.
Your computer will restart into its firmware interface. The mouse may not work there, so use the arrow keys, Enter, and the on-screen instructions.

Search the main firmware menus for a keyboard or hotkey option. On Acer systems, for example, it may be under Main, System Configuration, or Advanced. The choices generally mean:
| Option | Top-row default |
|---|---|
| Function Key | F1–F12 send standard function commands; hold Fn for media controls. |
| Media Key or Multimedia Key | Volume, brightness, playback, and other printed icons work directly; hold Fn for F1–F12. |
- Select the mode you want.
- Use the firmware’s Save and Exit command. On many systems, F10 saves the change.
- Allow Windows to start and test the top-row keys.
Do not simply leave the firmware screen or power off the computer. If the behavior has not changed, re-enter UEFI and confirm that the setting was saved.
Firmware menus are model-specific. Some newer laptops do not expose a function-key option at all, even when similar models do. Do not change unrelated settings such as boot order, Secure Boot, or virtualization while looking for the keyboard option.
3. Use Windows Mobility Center if your laptop supports it
Some laptops expose a function-row control through Windows Mobility Center. It is not a standard feature on every computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
mblctr. - Select OK.
- Look for a tile named Function Key Row or something similar.
- Choose Function key or Multimedia key.
You may also be able to open Mobility Center by right-clicking the battery icon and selecting Windows Mobility Center. If the tile is missing, Windows has not malfunctioned; that keyboard or laptop does not provide this control through Mobility Center.
4. Check the manufacturer’s keyboard utility
Some manufacturers place the setting in their own Windows application rather than in UEFI. Open the computer maker’s control app from the Start menu or notification area, then inspect sections named Keyboard, Hotkeys, Input, or Function keys.
The application name and setting depend on the model. A setting may be called Hotkey mode, Action keys, or Use F1-F12 as standard function keys. If the app is not installed, download only the version intended for your exact computer model from the manufacturer’s support site.
5. Use the startup key when Windows cannot open UEFI
Some computers do not show UEFI Firmware Settings in Windows. You can instead enter firmware during startup. Shut down or restart the computer, then repeatedly press the manufacturer’s firmware key as it starts. Common choices include Esc, Delete, F1, F2, F10, F11, and F12.
The correct key is normally displayed briefly on the startup screen or listed in the computer’s documentation. On many Acer systems it is F2. If the laptop is currently in media-key mode, you may need to hold Fn while pressing the relevant F key.
Another route is available from the sign-in screen or Start menu: select Power, hold Shift, choose Restart, and then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware settings.

Changing the default mode does not remove or disable the physical keys. It changes which command they send without a modifier.
- In media-key mode, pressing F5 may not refresh a browser unless you hold Fn.
- In function-key mode, pressing the top-row volume key may require Fn.
- Applications can still receive standard F1–F12 commands when the correct mode or modifier is used.
Also check that you are not confusing Fn Lock with Num Lock. If keys such as U, I, O, J, K, or L type numbers, the embedded numeric keypad is probably active. Turn off Num Lock, NumLk, or the model-specific shortcut, such as Fn + NumLk or Fn + F11.

What about an external keyboard?
An external keyboard generally controls its own Fn or F Lock behavior. A laptop’s UEFI setting normally does not reconfigure a separate USB or Bluetooth keyboard. Use the keyboard’s own lock key or documented shortcut. For Microsoft keyboards with an F Lock key, the key’s light indicates the active state: with F Lock on, standard F1–F12 commands operate; with it off, alternate commands operate.
FAQ
Can I disable the Fn key from Windows 11 Settings?
No. Windows 11 has no universal Fn-key switch. Fn is generally a hardware modifier, and the available change is the default interpretation of F1–F12. Use the keyboard shortcut, UEFI/BIOS, Mobility Center where supported, or the manufacturer’s utility.
Does Fn + Esc work on every laptop?
No. It works only on models that support that shortcut. Check for an Fn-lock symbol on Esc and consult the documentation for your exact model.
Why is there no Function Key Row option in Windows Mobility Center?
The tile is supplied by the computer’s hardware and manufacturer software. It is optional, so its absence means your system does not expose the control through Mobility Center.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will changing Fn Lock stop applications from using F1–F12?
No. It changes the default command for the top row. You can usually hold Fn, or switch the mode again, to send standard F1–F12 commands.
Is Fn Lock the same as Num Lock?
No. Fn Lock changes the behavior of the top row. Num Lock changes embedded letter keys into a numeric keypad. If U, I, O, J, K, or L type numbers, turn off Num Lock.
The Bottom Line
Start with the keyboard’s documented Fn Lock shortcut. If that is unavailable, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings and look for a manufacturer-specific function-key setting. Mobility Center and vendor utilities are useful alternatives, but neither is guaranteed to be available.
You are not really disabling the Fn key or removing F1–F12. You are selecting whether the standard function commands or the printed media controls are the default.
