You can rename a Microsoft Teams channel from the desktop or web app. The exact menu depends on whether the channel is standard, private, or shared, and you must have the appropriate owner or member permission.
Rename a standard Teams channel
Use these steps for a normal standard channel:
- Open Microsoft Teams in the desktop app or at Teams on the web.
- Find the team that contains the channel.
- Point to the channel name and select More options (…) .
- Select Edit channel.
- Replace the text in Channel name.
- Select Save.
The new name should then appear in the channel list. Teams also updates the name in search results, filters, notifications, and the connected SharePoint site.
Rename a private or shared channel
Private and shared channels use channel-management settings rather than the standard channel’s direct Edit channel option.

Who is allowed to rename a channel?
| Channel | Who can rename it? |
|---|---|
| Standard channel | The team owner, or a team member if member editing permissions are enabled by the team owner. |
| First-named channel | Only a team owner. |
| Private channel | The private-channel owner. |
| Shared channel | The shared-channel owner. |
Being a team owner does not automatically make you the owner of every private or shared channel. Those channels have separate ownership settings.
Can you rename the “General” channel?
The first-named channel has a special permission rule: only a team owner can rename it. Microsoft’s current guidance does not treat the first channel as permanently unchangeable. A team owner can rename the first-named channel to General; channels with that name appear at the top of the team’s channel list.
If you see an old guide saying that “General” can never be renamed, it is out of date.

Rename a channel from the Teams mobile app
Microsoft’s primary rename instructions direct users to the desktop or web app. The mobile interface can vary by account and channel type, but the documented member path is:

- Open Teams and find the team.
- Tap the team’s More options (…) .
- Tap Manage channels.
- Tap More options (…) beside the channel.
- Select Manage channel.
- Edit the channel details and tap the checkmark to save.
For a shared-channel owner, tap the channel name at the top of the screen and use the channel-management controls, including Manage the channel name.
If the rename controls are missing on mobile, use Teams for desktop or the web. This also makes it easier to identify whether the problem is the app or your permissions.
Teams channel naming rules
The replacement name must meet these requirements:
- It must be unique within the team.
- It cannot contain
/,,:,*,?,",<,>, or|. - When renaming through Microsoft Graph, the documented maximum
displayNamelength is 50 characters.
For a normal rename in Teams, enter the name in the Channel name field and select Save. If Teams rejects it, shorten the name, remove restricted characters, or check whether another channel in the same team already uses it.

- The associated SharePoint site references
It does not rename every item inside the channel. A channel tab, SharePoint folder, SharePoint list, or Lists tab has its own name. For example, renaming a Lists tab changes the tab label, not the Teams channel name or the underlying list. Rename the channel itself through Edit channel or Manage channel.
Troubleshooting Teams channel renames
“Edit channel” is missing
This usually means you do not have permission to rename that channel. Check the relevant case:
- You are not a team owner.
- You are a standard-channel member, but the team owner has not enabled member channel-editing permissions.
- You have access to a private or shared channel but are not its channel owner.
- You are looking at the first-named channel and are not a team owner.
For a private or shared channel, try Manage channel > Settings > Channel details instead of looking for Edit channel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe channel is hidden
A hidden channel must be shown before it can be edited from the regular channel list:

- Select See all your teams or See all your teams and channels.
- Select the relevant team.
- Under the team, select See all channels.
- Select Show beside the hidden channel.
Once it is visible, open its More options (…) menu and follow the appropriate rename path.
The new name will not save
Check for a duplicate name in the same team and remove any prohibited characters. If you are using Microsoft Graph, keep the channel display name within the documented 50-character limit.
A team owner cannot rename a private or shared channel
This is expected when the team owner is not also the private- or shared-channel owner. Ask the channel owner to make the change or update the channel’s ownership according to your organization’s Teams policies.
The channel type cannot be changed while renaming
Renaming only changes the channel’s name. It does not convert a standard channel into a private or shared channel, or convert either of those into another type. To use a different channel type, create a new channel.

FAQ
Why can’t I see the Edit channel option in Teams?
You may not have permission to rename the channel. Standard-channel members need the relevant member permission enabled by a team owner. Private and shared channels can generally be renamed by their channel owners, while only team owners can rename the first-named channel.
Can a Teams channel name be duplicated?
No. The replacement name must be unique within the team. A channel in another team can use the same name.
Can I rename a private Teams channel if I own the team?
Not necessarily. Private channels have separate channel ownership. You must be the private-channel owner, even if you are also a team owner.
