If you are looking for a legitimate GTA San Andreas download for Windows 11, first choose the edition you want. Rockstar currently sells Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which includes San Andreas, GTA III, and Vice City. The official store lists the package at $59.99 and shows Buy Now; it does not currently offer a permanent free PC download.

Rockstar’s launcher and game requirements specifically mention Windows 10 64-bit, but Windows 11 is also a supported newer Windows environment for normal launcher installation. The steps below cover the official purchase, existing entitlements, Xbox PC/Game Pass access when available, system requirements, and fixes for common launcher errors.

Which version of San Andreas can you download?

There are two different PC products commonly described as “GTA San Andreas.” They should not be treated as the same download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Version How it is obtained Minimum requirements listed by Rockstar
Original PC version Download through a store or Rockstar account entitlement that includes the original release 1 GHz Pentium or AMD Athlon, 256 MB RAM, 64 MB DirectX 9 graphics, 4.7 GB storage
San Andreas – The Definitive Edition Included in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, or available through a qualifying library entitlement when Rockstar lists it Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB RAM, GTX 760 2 GB or Radeon R9 280 3 GB, 45 GB storage

The original version has much lower requirements because it is the legacy release. The 4.7 GB and 256 MB figures do not describe the remastered Definitive Edition.

Is GTA San Andreas free to download on Windows 11?

There is no verified current official free-download offer for GTA San Andreas on Windows 11. Rockstar’s current store page lists the paid Trilogy package rather than a free standalone download:

Rockstar Games Store: Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition

Rockstar does have a support article about the old free offer. It describes the message “This feature is not currently available” when users try to claim it through the Rockstar Games Launcher. The article, updated April 27, 2024, does not establish that the giveaway is active now.

Do not download a purported “free full version” from an unofficial file host, torrent, crack site, or modified installer. Apart from copyright concerns, these packages commonly contain malware, altered executables, unwanted launchers, or fake activation screens. A free download is legitimate only if the game is already attached to your account through a qualifying purchase, promotion, subscription, or library entitlement.

Method 1: Download through the Rockstar Games Launcher

Use this method if you own a Rockstar version or have an active entitlement that includes the game.

  1. Open Rockstar’s official launcher page: socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher.
  2. Select the Windows download option and install Rockstar Games Launcher.
  3. Start the launcher and sign in to your Rockstar Games account, or create one.
  4. Open your library. If your account owns the game or has an eligible subscription entitlement, San Andreas will appear as available to install.
  5. Select the game, choose Install, select the installation folder, and allow the download to finish.
  6. Launch the game from the Rockstar Games Launcher. Activation and periodic entitlement verification require an internet connection.

Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas among the titles supported by its launcher, but being a supported title does not mean that every account receives it for free.

Method 2: Use Xbox PC or Game Pass when the title is included

Xbox PC access depends on the current catalog and your Microsoft account. Rockstar describes its PC GTA+ Games Library as a rotating selection, so do not assume that San Andreas is always included. Check the current listing in your Xbox PC app or Rockstar account before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Xbox app on Windows 11.
  2. Select Game Pass and search for the supported Rockstar title.
  3. Select Install, or select Play if it is already installed.
  4. Install Rockstar Games Launcher if Xbox prompts you to do so.
  5. Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher using the Rockstar account you intend to link.
  6. Choose Link Account and decide whether to enable cloud saves.
  7. Return to the Xbox app and start the game.

Account linking is required for Rockstar titles played through the Xbox app on PC. If you cancel the linking process, return to the Xbox app and select Play again to restart it.

Windows 11 requirements

Original PC version

  • Windows 10 64-bit listed by Rockstar
  • 1 GHz Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon processor
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 64 MB DirectX 9-compatible graphics hardware
  • DirectX 9
  • 4.7 GB available storage

Rockstar also lists activation and login, periodic entitlement verification, DirectX, Chromium, Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable, and Rockstar authentication software as part of the PC setup requirements.

Definitive Edition

  • Windows 10 64-bit listed by Rockstar
  • Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300 processor
  • 8 GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GTX 760 2 GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3 GB
  • 45 GB available storage

Rockstar’s recommended specifications are an Intel Core i7-2700K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 16 GB RAM, and a GTX 970 4 GB or Radeon RX 570 4 GB. Windows 11 PCs that meet these requirements should still be checked for current graphics drivers and sufficient free space.

Fix “This feature is not currently available”

If the launcher does not show the Store menu and displays this message while you try to claim the old free offer, the issue is not a documented way to unlock a current free copy. Rockstar’s support article points users to its Terms of Service and does not provide a workaround that restores the expired promotion.

Check your Rockstar library and current store or subscription entitlement instead. If San Andreas is not listed as owned or available, you need to purchase an eligible product or wait for an official promotion.

Fix “Only Windows 10 and later are supported”

On Windows 11, this error can occur when the Rockstar launcher or game executable has been forced into an older Windows compatibility mode. Clear that setting.

Rockstar Games Launcher shortcut

  1. Right-click the Rockstar Games Launcher shortcut.
  2. Select Properties, then open Compatibility.
  3. Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  4. Select Apply, then OK.
  5. Relaunch the launcher and the game.

Rockstar-installed game executable

  1. Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Under My installed games, select San Andreas.
  4. Under View installation folder, select Open.
  5. Right-click the game’s .exe file and select Properties.
  6. Open Compatibility, clear Run this program in compatibility mode for, then select Apply and OK.

Steam version

  1. Close Steam.
  2. Right-click the Steam shortcut and select Properties.
  3. Open Compatibility and clear the compatibility-mode option.
  4. Select Apply and OK, then reopen Steam.

You can also find the executable by opening Steam and choosing Library → right-clicking the game → Manage → Browse local files. Adjust the executable’s compatibility settings in the same way.

Epic Games version

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
  2. Select the three dots on the game card, then choose Manage.
  3. In the Installation section, select the folder icon.
  4. Right-click the game executable and choose Properties.
  5. Open Compatibility, clear the compatibility-mode option, and select Apply and OK.

Do you need a command in Command Prompt?

No. Rockstar’s documented installation, activation, Xbox linking, and compatibility procedures use launcher and Windows interface controls. Be cautious of guides that tell you to run an unverified CMD or PowerShell command to “activate” a free copy. There is no official command-line activation step in the procedures above.

FAQ

Can I download GTA San Andreas free on Windows 11?

There is no verified current permanent free PC offer from Rockstar. You can download it without a new purchase only when your account already has a qualifying ownership, promotion, subscription, or library entitlement.

Where is the official GTA San Andreas PC download?

For Rockstar purchases and entitlements, install Rockstar Games Launcher from Rockstar’s official launcher page, sign in, and install the game from your library.

Is the original San Andreas the same as the Definitive Edition?

No. The original PC release is the legacy version with a listed 4.7 GB requirement. The Definitive Edition is the remastered version in The Trilogy and requires 45 GB of storage and 8 GB RAM minimum.

Why does Rockstar say “This feature is not currently available”?

That message is associated with attempts to claim the old free offer. Rockstar’s support article does not document an active giveaway or a workaround that restores one.

Will GTA San Andreas run on Windows 11?

Rockstar lists Windows 10 64-bit for both PC versions. A Windows 11 system should be checked against the relevant requirements, with current drivers and compatibility mode disabled if the launcher reports an operating-system error.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: install GTA San Andreas on Windows 11 through Rockstar Games Launcher, Xbox PC/Game Pass, Steam, or Epic only when you have a valid entitlement. The current official Rockstar store presents the Definitive Edition as a paid Trilogy product, and the former free-offer page does not represent a current giveaway. Avoid unofficial “full free download” installers.
