A flickering cursor in Microsoft Word can mean several different things. A normal text caret blinks inside the document, but repeated switching between the arrow and busy pointer, an irregularly flashing I-beam, or flickering across the whole screen points to a different problem.
Start by identifying which symptom you have. Then use the matching fix instead of changing unrelated mouse settings.
First, identify what is flickering
| What you see | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| The entire Windows display flickers, including Word and other apps | Display driver or Windows graphics subsystem |
| Only Word flickers, while Task Manager and other apps look normal | Word add-ins, Word rendering, template/settings damage, or Office installation files |
| A vertical line inside text blinks at a steady rhythm | Normal text-insertion caret behavior |
| The pointer repeatedly changes between the arrow and a busy/loading pointer in Word | Often an add-in, graphics-rendering problem, display driver, or damaged Office installation |
1. Check whether the problem affects Windows or only Word
- Press
Ctrl + Alt + Delete. - Open Task Manager. If necessary, press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc. - Watch Task Manager while Word is open and the cursor is flickering.
If Task Manager flickers too, Windows has a display-driver problem until proven otherwise. If Task Manager remains stable and only Word flickers, concentrate on Word, its add-ins, and Office repair.
2. Reset the Windows graphics driver
Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This resets the graphics driver without restarting Windows. A short beep or momentary screen flicker can occur when the reset works.

This is a Windows graphics reset, not a Word reset. It does not disable Word add-ins, repair Office, or change Word’s settings. If the symptom returns, continue with the driver steps below.
3. Update, roll back, or reinstall the display driver
Use these steps when Task Manager flickers along with Word, or when the problem affects other applications.
Update the driver
- Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter and select Update driver.
- Restart Windows if the driver is updated.
Roll back a recently changed driver
If the flickering began after Windows Update or a graphics-driver update:
- Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, select Yes, and restart.
The rollback option is unavailable if Windows has no previous driver to restore. Administrator permission may also be required.
Uninstall the display driver
As a further diagnostic step, open Device Manager > Display adapters > [your adapter] > Properties > Driver > Uninstall Device. Restart Windows afterward so it can attempt to reinstall the driver. If the issue continues, obtain the appropriate driver from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer.
4. Disable Word hardware graphics acceleration
Word may flicker when its rendering process conflicts with the graphics driver. In Word for Windows, check for this option:
- Open Word.
- Go to File > Options > Advanced.
- Scroll to the Display section.
- Select Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
- Select OK and restart Word.
This option is not present in every Word build or installation. It may disappear after an update, so do not assume that a missing checkbox means you have overlooked it. It is also a Word setting, not a Windows-wide hardware-acceleration switch.

Optional registry workaround when the checkbox is missing
A Microsoft Q&A workaround creates a graphics setting manually. This is a community-provided workaround rather than a current Microsoft Support repair procedure. Back up the registry first, and avoid it on a managed work computer unless your administrator approves it.
- Close Word and other Office applications.
- Press
Windows key + R, typeregedit, and pressEnter. - Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0CommonGraphics. - If Graphics does not exist, create the key under Common.
- In the right pane, create a DWORD (32-bit) Value named
DisableHardwareAcceleration. - Set its value to
1. - Close Registry Editor and restart Word.
Delete the value or set it to 0 to undo this workaround.
5. Test Word without add-ins
Word add-ins can repeatedly trigger background activity and cause the pointer to switch to a busy indicator. Test this before changing templates or the registry.
Use Word’s safe-mode test
- Close Word.
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type
winword /safeand pressEnter. - Open or create a document and check the cursor.
If the flicker stops in this mode, an add-in is a likely cause. The command is a temporary diagnostic test.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Disable COM add-ins one at a time
- Open Word normally.
- Go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-Ins.
- Select Go.
- Clear one add-in checkbox, select OK, and restart Word.
- Repeat with the next add-in until the flickering stops.
Testing one item at a time identifies the offending add-in more reliably than disabling everything and re-enabling several items together.
Test without Word Startup-folder add-ins
Word also loads templates and add-ins from Startup folders. Close every Office application, then inspect the per-user folder:
%userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWordStartup
Temporarily rename a suspected file by appending .old, for example translator.dotm to translator.dotm.old. Record the original name so you can restore it.

Office installation Startup folders can also contain add-ins. Their location depends on the installation type:
| Installation | Startup folder |
|---|---|
| 64-bit Click-to-Run | %programfiles%Microsoft Officerootoffice16Startup |
| 32-bit Click-to-Run | %programfiles(x86)%Microsoft Officerootoffice16Startup |
| 64-bit MSI | %programfiles%Microsoft Officeoffice16Startup |
| 32-bit MSI | %programfiles(x86)%Microsoft Officeoffice16Startup |
Verify the actual folder on the affected computer before moving files. The Microsoft troubleshooting page has inconsistent formatting for the 32-bit environment variable; the normal Windows variable is %programfiles(x86)%.
6. Reset Word’s global template
A damaged Normal.dotm can cause unusual Word behavior. This test makes Word create a fresh default template. Close all Office programs first.
Open Command Prompt and run:
ren %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplatesNormal.dotm OldNormal.dotm
Start Word again. It should create a new Normal.dotm. Your customizations stored in the old template may not appear, so keep OldNormal.dotm until you know whether the test fixed the issue.
The older Word 2003 command is different:
ren %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplatesNormal.dot OldNormal.dot
Do not use the Normal.dot command for Microsoft 365, Office 2024, Office 2021, Office 2019, or Office 2016.

Microsoft’s formal Word troubleshooting guidance documents winword /a. Run it from Windows key + R:
winword /a
The /a switch prevents add-ins and global templates from loading automatically and locks Word’s settings files against being read or modified. It is a diagnostic switch, not a permanent repair. It is related to, but not the same as, the winword /safe test.

8. Reset Word’s Data registry key
If Word-only flickering remains after the add-in and template tests, reset Word’s Data key. Export the key first because this procedure resets several preferences, including the recently used file list and many customized Options settings.
- Close all Office programs.
- Open
regedit. - Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0WordData. - Right-click Data, choose Export, and save the backup.
- After confirming the backup exists, delete the Data key.
- Start Word. It will rebuild the key.
The Office version number varies with Word:
| Word version | Registry version |
|---|---|
| Word 2016 and later | 16.0 |
| Word 2013 | 15.0 |
| Word 2010 | 14.0 |
| Word 2007 | 12.0 |
| Word 2003 | 11.0 |
9. Repair Microsoft Office
Repair the whole Office suite even when Word is the only application showing the problem.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three-dot menu (…) and choose Modify.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select Modify.
For Click-to-Run installations, try Quick Repair first. It is faster and detects and replaces corrupted files. If that fails, use Online Repair, which is the more comprehensive option and may require more time and an internet connection.
For an MSI-based installation, choose Repair > Continue.
10. Change cursor settings only for a cursor-specific symptom
If the only problem is the blinking text caret, search Windows for Change Cursor blink rate and choose a slower or faster rate. A steady blinking I-beam is normal; changing the blink rate does not repair rendering or Office files.
If the mouse pointer disappears while typing, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse > Additional mouse options > Pointer Options and check Hide pointer while typing. This changes pointer visibility only. It will not fix Word add-ins, graphics drivers, or a damaged Office installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecommended order
- Check whether Task Manager flickers.
- Press
Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. - If Windows-wide, update or roll back the display driver.
- If Word-only, test
winword /safeand disable add-ins individually. - Disable Word hardware graphics acceleration if the option is available.
- Rename
Normal.dotmto test the global template. - Repair Office, using Quick Repair before Online Repair.
- Use the registry resets only after exporting backups and only when the earlier tests do not identify the cause.
FAQ
Why does my cursor flicker only in Word?
Word-only flickering is commonly associated with a Word add-in, Word graphics rendering, a display-driver interaction, or damaged Office files. Start Word with winword /safe; if the problem disappears, disable COM add-ins one at a time.

Is a blinking vertical line in Word a problem?
A regularly blinking vertical line inside text is the normal text-insertion caret. Investigate further if it disappears irregularly, flashes abnormally, or the pointer repeatedly changes to a busy/loading indicator.
What does Windows key plus Ctrl plus Shift plus B do?
Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B resets the Windows graphics driver. It may produce a beep or brief screen flicker. It does not reset Word or disable Word add-ins.
Why can’t I find Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Word?
The checkbox is not available in every Word build or installation and may be missing after an update. Do not treat its absence as a mistake. You can continue with add-in testing, driver troubleshooting, and Office repair.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I use winword /safe or winword /a?
Use winword /safe for the safe-mode test cited in current Microsoft Q&A guidance. Microsoft’s formal Word troubleshooting documentation describes winword /a as a diagnostic switch that prevents automatic loading of add-ins and global templates. They are not interchangeable labels.
Will Office repair remove my Word documents?
Office repair targets the Office installation and applies to the full suite. Save your work and close Office applications before starting. Repair is separate from deleting personal documents, but you may need to recheck Office settings afterward.
The Bottom Line
Use Task Manager to decide whether this is a Windows graphics problem or a Word-only problem. Reset the graphics driver for system-wide flicker; test winword /safe, add-ins, graphics acceleration, the global template, and Office repair for Word-only flicker. Change cursor blink settings only when the symptom is the normal text caret, not when Word is rendering or loading incorrectly.
