There is no verified, permanent free download of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for Windows 10 from Rockstar. Rockstar’s current store listing offers Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for $59.99, including GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. The official listing has a Buy Now button, not a free-download option.
You can download San Andreas without making another purchase only if your Rockstar account already owns the game or has access through a qualifying subscription or game-library entitlement. Avoid websites offering “full free PC downloads”: unofficial installers commonly bundle malware, modified executables, or pirated copies.
Choose the version you want
“GTA San Andreas for PC” can refer to two different products. Check the requirements before downloading:
| Version | How it is sold | Minimum requirements listed by Rockstar |
|---|---|---|
| Original PC version | A legacy PC release available to accounts that own it through a supported store or Rockstar entitlement | Windows 10 64-bit, 1 GHz Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon, 256 MB RAM, 64 MB DirectX 9 graphics, DirectX 9, and 4.7 GB storage |
| San Andreas – The Definitive Edition | Included in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Windows 10 64-bit, Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300, 8 GB RAM, GTX 760 2 GB or Radeon R9 280 3 GB, and 45 GB storage |
The first row describes the original game, not the remastered Definitive Edition. The Definitive Edition needs substantially more storage, memory, and graphics performance.
#1 Best Overall
Method 1: Download it from the Rockstar Games Launcher
Use this method if the game is already attached to your Rockstar Games account, or if your account has an active entitlement that includes it.
- Open the official Rockstar Games Launcher page: socialclub.rockstargames.com/rockstar-games-launcher.
- Download and install the launcher for Windows.
- Start the launcher and sign in to your Rockstar Games account. Create an account if you do not have one.
- Open your library. If San Andreas is included in your account, select it and choose Install.
- Choose an installation folder with enough free space, then allow the launcher to download the files.
- After installation, select Play. Rockstar requires internet access for sign-in, activation, and periodic entitlement verification.
Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas among the PC titles supported by its launcher. That does not mean the game is free; the launcher is the delivery and account-verification tool.
Rockstar Games Launcher requirements
The launcher itself requires Windows 10 64-bit, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible video card, and approximately 1 GB of disk space. The game requires additional storage according to the edition you install.

Method 2: Install through Xbox on PC when your entitlement includes it
If San Andreas is available to your Xbox PC account through a supported Game Pass or other library entitlement, install it from the Xbox app. Availability can change, so check the title’s listing in the app rather than relying on an old article or video.
- Open the Xbox app on your Windows 10 PC.
- Select Game Pass and search for the supported Rockstar title.
- Select the game and choose Install. If it is already installed, choose Play.
- Install the Rockstar Games Launcher if Xbox prompts you to do so.
- Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher with your Rockstar Games account.
- When prompted, select Link Account.
- Choose whether to enable cloud saves and complete the linking process.
If you cancel the account-linking screen, return to the Xbox PC app and select Play again. The linking process must be restarted from the Xbox app.
A linked Xbox account does not automatically provide every Rockstar game. The specific title must be available to your account at the time you install it.
Method 3: Use an existing Steam or Epic Games purchase
If you purchased a supported PC edition through Steam or Epic Games, install it from the store where you bought it. Sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher when the game requests it, and use the Rockstar account that owns or has access to the entitlement. Do not assume that buying one edition automatically grants a different edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat happened to the old free Rockstar offer?
Rockstar has a support article for users who see “This feature is not currently available” while trying to claim the old free San Andreas offer through the Rockstar Games Launcher. The article was updated on April 27, 2024, but it does not document a current giveaway or provide a method for restoring one. It directs users to Rockstar’s Terms of Service.
Therefore, if the launcher does not show a valid claim option, the offer should not be treated as an active free download. Do not use a third-party “activation key,” torrent, cracked launcher, or repacked installer to bypass the purchase requirement.
Fix the “Only Windows 10 and later are supported” error
This error can appear when the launcher or game executable is set to run in an older Windows compatibility mode. Clear that setting on the launcher and, if necessary, on the game executable.
Fix the Rockstar Games Launcher shortcut
- Close the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Right-click its shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.

- Reopen the launcher and start the game.
Fix the game executable from Rockstar Launcher

- Under View installation folder, select Open.
- Right-click the game’s
.exefile and choose Properties. - On Compatibility, clear Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Select Apply and OK, then try the game again.
Fix the setting in Steam
- Close Steam.
- Right-click the Steam shortcut, choose Properties, and open Compatibility.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for, then select Apply and OK.
- Alternatively, open Steam, go to Library, right-click the game, select Manage → Browse local files, and clear the same setting on the game executable.
Fix the setting in Epic Games Launcher
- Open Library in Epic Games Launcher.
- Select the three dots on the game card and choose Manage.
- On the Installation tab, select the folder icon.
- Right-click the game executable and choose Properties → Compatibility.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for, then select Apply and OK.
Important installation checks
- Confirm the edition: the original release needs about 4.7 GB, while the Definitive Edition needs 45 GB.
- Check Windows: Rockstar’s listed requirements specify Windows 10 64-bit.
- Allow internet access: activation, account sign-in, and periodic entitlement checks require connectivity.
- Use the correct account: signing in with a different Rockstar, Steam, Epic, or Xbox account can make an owned game appear unavailable.
- Do not run compatibility mode unnecessarily: it can trigger the Windows-version error instead of fixing it.
- Do not expect a command-line installer: Rockstar’s documented download, activation, Xbox-linking, and compatibility procedures use the launchers’ graphical controls. No CMD or PowerShell command is required.
FAQ
Is GTA San Andreas free to download on Windows 10?
Not as a current, verified permanent Rockstar giveaway. Rockstar’s current store listing sells the Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for $59.99. A download without another purchase is possible only when your account already has a valid purchase, subscription, or library entitlement.
Can I still claim the old free San Andreas offer?
Rockstar’s support page for the old offer reports the message “This feature is not currently available.” It does not describe an active giveaway or a workaround that creates a new free entitlement.
Does GTA+ always include San Andreas on PC?
No. Rockstar describes the PC GTA+ Games Library as a rotating selection. Check the current library in the Rockstar Games Launcher before assuming San Andreas is included.
Which version needs 45 GB of storage?
The Definitive Edition requires 45 GB of storage at minimum. The original PC version has a much smaller listed requirement of 4.7 GB.
Do I need a Rockstar Games account?
Yes. Rockstar requires account sign-in for launcher use, game activation, and entitlement verification. Xbox PC installations of supported Rockstar titles also require linking the Xbox account to a Rockstar Games account.
Why does the launcher say that only Windows 10 and later are supported?
The launcher or game executable may be configured for an older Windows compatibility mode. Open its Properties, select Compatibility, clear “Run this program in compatibility mode for,” and then apply the change.
The Bottom Line
For a legitimate Windows 10 installation, download the Rockstar Games Launcher from Rockstar’s official website and install San Andreas only when your account shows a valid entitlement. Otherwise, purchase the official Trilogy – The Definitive Edition or wait for a verified promotion. The old free-offer error is not evidence of a current giveaway, and unofficial free-download sites are not a safe substitute.
