Microsoft Edge currently calls this setting Use graphics acceleration when available. It controls whether Edge can use the GPU for tasks such as video decoding, page rendering, animations, and WebGL.

Graphics acceleration can improve video playback and reduce CPU usage, but an incompatible driver, dock, monitor, or remote-desktop session can cause black video, flickering, tearing, freezes, or crashes. You can change the setting from Edge itself, or start Edge with the Chromium --disable-gpu switch for a temporary test.

Method 1: Enable or disable acceleration in Edge Settings

This is the normal, persistent method. The setting remains changed when you close and reopen Edge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner, then select Settings.
  3. Open System and performance.
  4. Under System, find Use graphics acceleration when available.
  5. Turn the switch on to enable acceleration, or off to disable it.
  6. Select Restart when Edge displays the restart prompt. If no prompt appears, close every Edge window and open the browser again.

The quickest route is to enter this address in Edge’s address bar:

edge://settings/system

Then change Use graphics acceleration when available and restart Edge.

Which option should you choose?

Setting What it does When to try it
On Allows Edge to use supported GPU features. Normal use, especially video playback, WebGL, animations, and graphics-heavy sites.
Off Prevents Edge from using GPU acceleration and may move video decoding to software. Black video, flickering, corrupted colors, crashes, display problems, or issues involving a dock or remote desktop.

Method 2: Start Edge with --disable-gpu

The Chromium command-line switch --disable-gpu disables GPU acceleration for the Edge session you launch. It is useful for troubleshooting because it lets you compare Edge with and without GPU acceleration without immediately changing the normal setting.

Close all Edge windows first. If Edge is already running, a new command may connect to the existing browser process, and the requested switch may not take effect.

Windows Run dialog

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter the following command:
msedge.exe --disable-gpu
  1. Press Enter.

If Windows cannot find msedge.exe, use Edge’s full executable path. Common locations include:

"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --disable-gpu

On some newer or 64-bit installations, use:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --disable-gpu

Windows shortcut

  1. Right-click an Edge shortcut and select Properties.
  2. Open the Shortcut tab.
  3. In the Target box, place the cursor after the closing quotation mark.
  4. Type a space followed by --disable-gpu. For example:
"C:Program Files (x86)MicrosoftEdgeApplicationmsedge.exe" --disable-gpu
  1. Select Apply, then OK.
  2. Use that shortcut to start Edge.

Do not put the switch inside the quotation marks surrounding the executable path. The space and placement after the closing quotation mark are important.

macOS Terminal

Close Edge, open Terminal, and run:

open -a "Microsoft Edge" --args --disable-gpu

Linux Terminal

For the stable Edge package, run:

microsoft-edge --disable-gpu

Depending on the channel installed, the executable may instead be:

microsoft-edge-stable --disable-gpu
microsoft-edge-beta --disable-gpu
microsoft-edge-dev --disable-gpu

Make the command-line change permanent

--disable-gpu applies only to the Edge process launched with that switch. It does not permanently turn off Use graphics acceleration when available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make the change persistent:

  1. Close all Edge windows.
  2. Start Edge with --disable-gpu.
  3. Open edge://settings/system.
  4. Turn Use graphics acceleration when available off.
  5. Restart Edge normally, without the switch.

How to check whether acceleration is working

Open this diagnostic page:

edge://gpu

Look at Graphics Feature Status. For video playback, the most relevant entry is Video Decode. If it says Hardware accelerated, Edge is using the GPU for that feature.

Do not expect every line on edge://gpu to say Hardware accelerated. Edge reports features individually, and some may show Software only, Disabled, or Unavailable. The result depends on the operating system, GPU, driver, hardware support, and Edge’s compatibility rules.

For more detailed video information, open:

edge://media-internals

Look for the decoder being used:

Decoder shown Meaning
D3D11VideoDecoder Hardware video decoding on a supported Windows path.
MediaFoundationVideoDecoder Hardware or Windows Media Foundation video decoding, depending on the format and system.
FFmpegVideoDecoder Software video decoding.

What to do if disabling acceleration fixes the problem

If video or page rendering works correctly with acceleration disabled, the setting is a useful workaround, but it points to a likely GPU path problem. Check for updates to the graphics driver from your computer or GPU manufacturer, then test acceleration again.

If acceleration is enabled but video still uses software decoding, Microsoft recommends checking edge://gpu, edge://media-internals, and the GPU driver. You can also turn the setting off, restart Edge, turn it on again, and restart once more.

H.264 and HEVC are not identical cases

Disabling or unsupported acceleration can make Edge use its FFmpeg software decoder for H.264. If the GPU driver lacks the required H.264 decode profile, Edge may also fall back to software decoding even while graphics acceleration is enabled. If that fallback fails, H.264 playback may not work.

HEVC has a separate Windows dependency. Edge uses the Windows MediaFoundationVideoDecoder path for HEVC, and an invalid or third-party HEVC Video Extension license can prevent playback. In edge://gpu, the problem may appear as:

Failed to create HEVC decoder instance, License check for app failed (0xC00DB3B3)

That error is not necessarily fixed by changing Edge’s graphics-acceleration switch.

Managed computers: when the switch is unavailable

An organization can control the setting with the HardwareAccelerationModeEnabled policy. In Windows Group Policy, the policy is located at:

Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Use graphics acceleration when available

The corresponding Windows registry policy is:

HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge

with this value:

HardwareAccelerationModeEnabled

It is a REG_DWORD: 1 enables the policy and 0 disables it. Policy changes require an Edge restart. If the setting is greyed out or keeps reverting on a work or school computer, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly changing the local setting.

This policy applies to Edge 77 and later on Windows and macOS. It is not supported on Android or iOS, and the mobile versions do not expose the same desktop graphics-acceleration switch.

Why can’t I find “Use hardware acceleration when available”?

Microsoft’s current wording is Use graphics acceleration when available. Open edge://settings/system and look under System. Older guides use the former label.

Does --disable-gpu permanently disable acceleration?

No. It affects the Edge session launched with the switch. For a permanent user-level change, open edge://settings/system after launching Edge with the switch, turn the setting off, and restart Edge normally.

How do I know whether Edge is using hardware video decoding?

Open edge://gpu and check whether Video Decode says Hardware accelerated. For decoder details, use edge://media-internals.

Should every item in edge://gpu say “Hardware accelerated”?

No. GPU features are evaluated separately. It is normal to see a mixture of Hardware accelerated, Software only, Disabled, and Unavailable.

Is hardware acceleration available in Edge for Android or iPhone?

The desktop setting described here is not exposed in the same way on mobile. Microsoft’s HardwareAccelerationModeEnabled policy is unsupported on Android and iOS.

The Bottom Line

Use edge://settings/system to enable or disable Edge’s graphics acceleration persistently. Use --disable-gpu when you need a temporary troubleshooting launch. After changing the setting, restart Edge and verify the relevant feature—especially Video Decode—in edge://gpu rather than expecting every graphics feature to use the GPU.
