If the top of Microsoft Teams looks different, first identify which toolbar is missing. Teams has an app bar for navigation and a separate meeting control bar for controls such as the microphone, camera, chat, and leave button. Microsoft’s 2026 change affects the app bar—not the in-meeting controls.
Use the steps below in order. Start with the shortcut and interface checks before resetting or deleting Teams data.
1. Identify the missing Teams toolbar

This distinction matters because the Microsoft announcement about the simplified toolbar concerns app navigation. It does not establish that Microsoft removed the meeting control bar or that one universal setting fixes every missing-meeting-controls case.

2. Show the simplified app bar
Microsoft changed the Teams app bar for Windows and macOS desktop users during a rollout scheduled from mid-March through the end of April 2026. The simplified design shows fewer items, moves additional apps into View more apps, and lets you show or hide the app bar. It was enabled by default and did not require administrator action.

- On macOS, press Command + .
These shortcuts apply to the simplified app bar. They are not a documented control for the meeting control bar.
If only one or two apps appear to be missing, select View more apps rather than assuming the bar has disappeared. The 2026 design intentionally places overflow apps there.
3. Check whether the app bar is hidden rather than broken
Try the shortcut once to show the app bar and again to confirm whether it is being toggled. If the bar returns but an app is absent, look under View more apps. App positions also affect keyboard navigation shortcuts.

For the current Teams shortcut list, open Settings and more in the upper-right corner, then select Keyboard shortcuts. In the desktop app, you can also press Ctrl + Period on Windows or Command + Period on Mac.
4. Reset the Teams app on Windows
Use this for New Teams when the app bar remains absent, the interface is visibly corrupted, or Teams behaves differently after an update. Resetting removes Teams app data, including configured personalization settings, so expect to sign in or reconfigure some preferences.
- Open the Windows Settings app.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Teams.
- Select the More options (…) button next to Teams.
- Select Advanced options.
- In the Reset section, select Reset.
- Start Teams again.
This is Microsoft’s current Windows reset route for New Teams. It is preferable to using the old Classic Teams cache path by habit.

5. Clear the New Teams cache manually on Windows
If resetting does not resolve the missing app bar, manually remove the New Teams cache.

- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Paste this path:
%userprofile%appdatalocalPackagesMSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalCacheMicrosoftMSTeams- Select OK.
- Delete every file and folder in that directory.
- Start Teams again.
The first restart can take longer than normal because Teams has to rebuild its cache. Do not interrupt the launch immediately if the window takes extra time to appear.
6. Clear the Classic Teams cache on Windows
The often-copied path %appdata%MicrosoftTeams is documented by Microsoft for Classic Teams, not New Teams.
- Quit Teams completely.
- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Enter:
%appdata%MicrosoftTeams- Select OK.
- Delete all files and folders in the directory.
- Restart Teams.
If you are using the current New Teams client, use the New Teams path in the previous section or the Windows Reset option instead.
7. Clear the New Teams cache on macOS
- Quit Teams from the Dock context menu, or press Command + Q.
- Open Finder > Applications > Utilities.
- Open Terminal.
- Run each command separately:
rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams
rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2- Start Teams again.
The first launch after clearing the cache may be slower while Teams recreates its local files.
8. Clear the Classic Teams cache on macOS
For Classic Teams, quit the application first, open Terminal, and run:

rm -r ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/TeamsThen restart Teams. This command is for the Classic Teams cache directory; it is not the New Teams macOS procedure.
9. If the missing toolbar is inside a meeting
If Chat, Teams, Calendar, and other navigation apps are visible but the controls inside a meeting are missing, you are dealing with the meeting control bar rather than the app bar.
- Do not treat the 2026 simplified app-bar change as evidence that meeting controls were removed.
- Do not expect Ctrl + or Command + to restore the meeting control bar.
- Check the meeting window itself rather than the main Teams navigation area, particularly if the meeting is in a separate window or the window is not displaying normally.
- If the controls remain absent after leaving and rejoining the meeting, record whether the problem occurs in the desktop client, the web app, or only one meeting before escalating it to your organization’s Teams administrator or Microsoft support.
The available Microsoft documentation does not identify one universal setting or fix for every missing-meeting-control-bar case. Claims that a specific acknowledged toolbar bug, Office repair, or reinstalling Office necessarily fixes it are not established by the sources used here.
10. Check zoom and navigation shortcuts
A zoomed or rearranged interface can make Teams navigation appear incomplete. In the desktop app, press Ctrl + 0 on Windows or Control + 0 on macOS to reset zoom. Microsoft does not list a zoom-reset shortcut for the web app.
When the app bar is present, these shortcuts open apps by their sequential position:

If you reordered the apps, the number corresponds to the new position. The web app also has different shortcut definitions from the desktop client, so it should not be assumed to have precisely the same interface behavior.

- Decide whether the missing element is the app bar or meeting control bar.
- For the app bar, press Ctrl + or Command + .
- Look under View more apps.
- Reset New Teams from Windows Settings if you use Windows.
- Clear the cache using the path for your Teams version and operating system.
- For meeting controls, document the exact client and meeting conditions instead of applying an app-bar fix.
Microsoft’s cache-clearing documentation applies to both Classic and New Teams and was last updated July 14, 2025. The 2026 app-bar announcement expired on June 1, 2026, but its documented shortcuts and design details explain why the current navigation area may look different.
FAQ
Why did my Teams top toolbar disappear?
You may be seeing Microsoft’s simplified app-bar design, which can hide the app bar or move apps into View more apps. If the missing controls are inside a meeting, that is a different meeting control bar and is not explained by the app-bar change.
What is the shortcut to show the Teams toolbar?
For the simplified app bar, press Ctrl + backslash on Windows or Command + backslash on macOS. These shortcuts do not necessarily restore the in-meeting meeting control bar.
Is %appdata%MicrosoftTeams the correct New Teams cache folder?
No. Microsoft documents that location for Classic Teams. New Teams on Windows uses %userprofile%appdatalocalPackagesMSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalCacheMicrosoftMSTeams, or you can use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced options > Reset.
Will resetting Teams delete anything?
Microsoft states that resetting the Windows Teams app deletes app data, including configured personalization settings. You may need to sign in again or restore preferences.
Why is Teams slow to open after I clear the cache?
The first restart can take longer because Teams must rebuild its cache files. Allow it time to complete before concluding that the procedure failed.
Does repairing Office fix a missing Teams toolbar?
The available Microsoft documentation does not identify Office repair as a Teams-toolbar remedy. It should not be presented as a guaranteed fix.

For a missing navigation toolbar, try the app-bar shortcut first and check View more apps. If the app bar is still missing, reset New Teams or clear the cache using the version-specific Microsoft path.
