The supported fix for a missing MSVCP140.dll error is to install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime that the affected program needs. Do not download the DLL by itself from a third-party DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32.
Microsoft now calls the current package the latest supported Visual C++ v14 Redistributable. It supports applications built with Visual Studio 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2026. The installer must also match the application’s architecture: a 32-bit program may need the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
What the MSVCP140.dll error means
MSVCP140.dll is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Applications compiled with Microsoft Visual C++ use files in this runtime for standard C++ functions. If the required runtime is missing, damaged, or the wrong architecture, Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because MSVCP140.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “MSVCP140.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP140.dll was not found.”
The DLL is not normally repaired as an individual Windows system file. Reinstalling the complete Microsoft package is safer because it installs the related runtime files together and registers the correct installation.

1. Install the current Visual C++ v14 Redistributable
Download the installer directly from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page. The direct Microsoft links are:

Choose the package based on the application, not just the Windows version:
- For a 32-bit program, install x86. This is required even on 64-bit Windows.
- For a native 64-bit program, install x64.
- For an ARM64 program, use ARM64 where appropriate.
If you are unsure and use 64-bit Windows, installing both x86 and x64 is often appropriate because many older desktop programs are 32-bit. On ARM64 Windows, Microsoft states that the x64 package contains both x64 and ARM64 binaries; the separate ARM64 package is also available.

- Close the program showing the error.
- Download the appropriate installer from the links above.
- Right-click the downloaded
.exefile and choose Run as administrator if Windows requests permission. - If the runtime is not installed, select Install.
- If the installer detects an existing installation, select Repair.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Open the affected application again.
For applications built with Visual Studio 2017 or later, the latest supported v14 package is the correct default because the v14 toolchains share binary compatibility. The runtime version must be at least as recent as the MSVC build tools used to create the application.
2. Repair the installed Visual C++ package in Windows 11
If the package is already installed but its files are damaged, repair it from Windows:

- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Open the … menu beside the matching package.
- Choose Modify.
- In the Microsoft Visual C++ installer, select Repair.
- Restart the computer if prompted, then test the program.
You may see several Visual C++ entries, including separate x86 and x64 installations. Repair the architecture the affected program uses. If you are not sure, repair both current v14 entries or run both Microsoft installers again.
3. Repair the affected application
The runtime may be correctly installed while the application itself has missing files or a broken installation. Windows 11 provides a repair option for some applications:

- Find the application that shows the MSVCP140.dll error.
- Select its menu or open its entry and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not solve it, return to the same screen and select Reset, if that option is available. Reset can remove the application’s local settings or stored data, so use it only after Repair. Not all traditional desktop applications expose Repair or Reset in Windows Settings.
4. Check whether you installed the wrong architecture
Installing x64 does not satisfy a 32-bit program’s dependency on x86. This is one of the most common reasons the error remains after someone says they “installed Visual C++.”
Useful clues include:
- Older games, utilities, plugins, and office add-ins are frequently 32-bit.
- A program installed under a location such as
C:Program Files (x86)is commonly 32-bit, although the folder alone is not absolute proof. - Some vendors list x86, x64, or ARM64 requirements on the application’s download or support page.
On 64-bit Windows, install the x86 package for a 32-bit application and the x64 package for a 64-bit application. Windows 10 and Windows 11 can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications, so the operating system edition does not determine the required runtime.

5. Handle older applications that need a legacy runtime
The current v14 package does not replace every older Visual C++ Redistributable. Microsoft lists the 2013, 2012, 2010, 2008, and 2005 redistributables separately, and older packages remain installed side by side.
If a program was built with an older Visual Studio release, follow the application publisher’s requirements and install the corresponding older Microsoft Redistributable from Microsoft’s supported downloads page. Do not assume that installing the current v14 package will satisfy a dependency on a pre-2015 runtime.
Also note that “install Visual C++ 2015” is no longer the right general instruction. Visual Studio 2015 support ended on October 15, 2025, and the legacy Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable version 14.0.24212.0 is out of support. For applications using the v14 runtime, Microsoft recommends the current supported v14 Redistributable.
6. What to do if the installer fails
An installer error does not necessarily mean that MSVCP140.dll is the only problem. For example, error 1603 is a generic Windows Installer failure; it does not identify one specific cause. Microsoft also lists an invalid or inaccessible installation source as a possible failure condition.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh standalone installer from the Microsoft links above rather than using an old copy bundled with the application.
- Run the installer again.
- Try the other architecture if the application’s requirements indicate that it needs it.
- Repair the existing Visual C++ entry through Settings > Apps > Installed apps > … > Modify > Repair.
If the installer still fails, record the exact error code and check the application publisher’s support instructions. Corporate security software, restricted permissions, pending Windows restarts, or a damaged Windows Installer state can prevent installation. Avoid replacing the DLL manually, because that can leave the application with a mismatched set of runtime files.

Do not download MSVCP140.dll separately
Third-party DLL download sites are not the supported source for this file. A manually downloaded DLL may be the wrong version, the wrong architecture, incomplete, or bundled with unwanted software. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 also does not correctly repair the Visual C++ installation.
Use Microsoft’s Redistributable installer instead. It installs the runtime files as a compatible package and allows Windows to maintain the installation through its normal application-management tools.

No. A 32-bit application needs the x86 Redistributable, even on 64-bit Windows. Install the package matching the application’s target architecture; on 64-bit Windows, both x86 and x64 may be needed for different programs.
Is MSVCP140.dll included with Windows 10 or Windows 11?
The file is supplied by the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime. It is not a standalone Windows system-file download. Install or repair the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.

Do I need the old Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable?
Usually not for a modern application using the v14 runtime. Microsoft’s current recommendation is the latest supported v14 Redistributable. However, applications built for Visual C++ 2013 or earlier may still require their specific legacy Redistributable, installed side by side.
Why does the error remain after installing Visual C++?
The most likely reasons are a mismatched architecture, a damaged runtime installation, an application-specific problem, or a program that requires an older Visual C++ package. Install the correct x86, x64, or ARM64 package, use Repair, and check the application publisher’s requirements.
Do I need to restart after installing the runtime?
Sometimes. The installer can request a restart, especially when the runtime is installed separately from Visual Studio. Restart if prompted before testing the application again.
The Bottom Line
