If your browser keeps switching back to Yahoo after you select Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, or another search provider, changing the default once is unlikely to solve the problem. A browser extension, bundled application, or other unwanted software may be rewriting the setting.
Work through these four fixes in order. Start by selecting the search engine you want, then remove anything that keeps changing it. The menu names below apply to current desktop versions of Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.
1. Set your preferred search engine as the default
First, confirm that Yahoo is not simply still selected as the browser’s default. The steps differ by browser.

- Open Chrome and select More (the three dots).
- Open Settings.
- Select Search engine.
- Under Search engine, select Change.
- Choose Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, or another available provider.
This changes searches made from Chrome’s address bar. It does not remove Yahoo from the list, and it will not stop an extension or installed program from changing the selection again.

- Select Settings and more (the three dots) and open Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services.
- Open Search and connected services.
- Select Address bar and search.
- Choose your provider under Search engine used in the address bar.
Edge can add a provider after you use it, provided the website supports the OpenSearch standard.
Firefox
- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
- Select Search.
- Use the Default search engine drop-down to select your provider.
Firefox uses this setting for searches from both the address bar and the separate search bar.

2. Disable or remove the extension that changes the search engine
Extensions are a common cause of recurring Yahoo redirects. This does not necessarily mean Yahoo installed anything. A search hijacker can arrive through a browser add-on, a bundled installer, a fake antivirus application, an unreliable free download, an advertising network, or a download manager.

Remove extensions in Chrome
- Select More (three dots).
- Select Extensions, then Manage extensions.
- Review every installed extension.
- Turn off an extension that you do not trust, or select Remove to uninstall it.
- Restart Chrome and set your preferred search engine again.
If you have several unfamiliar extensions, remove them one at a time and test the browser after each removal. This makes it easier to identify the source.

- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
- Select Search and review the search-engine list.
- Use the list to choose your preferred default.
- Open the Firefox menu again, select Add-ons and themes, and inspect the installed extensions.
- Disable or remove the extension responsible for the Yahoo change.
A search engine supplied by an extension may not be removable from Firefox’s normal search-engine list. Remove the extension through Add-ons and themes instead. Also note that turning off a search engine in Firefox only hides it; it does not delete it.
Firefox can sometimes detect a likely hijack and automatically restore the country’s default search engine. Detection is not perfect. If Firefox displays Change Search Engine and Don’t change, choose the appropriate option, then open the Search settings page and select the provider you actually want.
3. Uninstall the unwanted program from Windows or macOS
If the search engine changes again after you remove an extension, a program installed on the computer may be rewriting the browser settings. Resetting the browser alone will not necessarily remove that program.

Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps (or Apps & features in some Windows versions).
- Sort the list by installation date if possible.
- Select an unfamiliar or unwanted application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows and test the browser.
Pay particular attention to programs installed shortly before the redirects began. Do not remove a program merely because its name is unfamiliar if it belongs to your computer manufacturer, security software, or another application you use. When in doubt, search the exact program name before uninstalling it.

macOS
- Open Finder.
- Select Applications in the left pane.
- Right-click the unrecognized application and select Move to Trash.
- Right-click Trash and select Empty Trash.
After removing the program, restart the Mac. If the browser still redirects, check its extensions again before resetting the browser.
4. Reset the browser’s settings
Use a browser reset after removing the extension or application causing the problem. Resetting first may give the unwanted software an opportunity to change the setting again.
Reset Chrome
- In Chrome, enter
chrome://settingsin the address bar, or open More → Settings. - Select Reset settings.
- Select Restore settings to their original defaults.
- Select Reset settings.
Chrome’s reset changes the default search engine, homepage and startup pages, new-tab page, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. It does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords. It is also not a complete reset: settings such as fonts and accessibility options are not removed.
After the reset, some extensions may be disabled. To review them, open More → Extensions → Manage extensions. Turn on only extensions you trust.

Chrome can automatically check and restore settings changed by unwanted software. If Chrome reports that it reset the search engine, the search-results page may show Got it and Learn more. For detailed settings information, type the exact address chrome://settings into the address bar.
Reset Firefox or Edge
Firefox’s current search-settings guidance does not provide one universal reset button in the same way Chrome does. Remove the offending add-on, inspect installed programs, and use Firefox’s troubleshooting or refresh tools if the problem remains.
For Edge, begin by removing suspicious extensions and uninstalling the related Windows application. Then return to Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Search and connected services → Address bar and search and select the preferred provider. The exact reset options can vary by Edge version and managed-device policy.

- Test after a full restart: close every browser window, restart the computer, and perform a new address-bar search.
- Check every browser: if Chrome, Edge, and Firefox all switch to Yahoo, suspect an operating-system program rather than one browser extension.
- Check browser policies: a work or school computer may enforce a search engine. If settings are unavailable or show that an administrator manages them, contact the administrator instead of trying to bypass the policy.
- Run a security scan: use your installed, up-to-date security software after removing suspicious applications.
- Do not install a second “search remover”: fake cleanup utilities can create another unwanted extension or program.
FAQ
Is Yahoo itself malware?
No. Yahoo is a legitimate search provider. The unwanted behavior is usually caused by an extension, bundled application, browser setting, or other software that redirects searches to Yahoo without your intended choice.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does Yahoo come back after I change the default search engine?
Something is probably rewriting the browser setting. Common causes include a suspicious extension, an unwanted Windows or macOS application, or a managed browser policy. Selecting another provider fixes the setting temporarily but does not remove the cause.

Can I just remove Yahoo from the browser’s search-engine list?
Not always. An extension can reapply Yahoo after you remove it from the list. Disable or uninstall the extension that controls the search setting. In Firefox, search engines supplied by extensions must be removed through the Add-ons Manager.
Will resetting Chrome delete my bookmarks and passwords?
No. Chrome says its settings reset does not delete saved bookmarks or passwords. It does change several browser settings, including the default search engine, homepage, startup pages, extensions, themes, cookies, and site data.
Why did Firefox change my search engine automatically?
Firefox may automatically restore a country’s default search engine when it detects a likely search hijack. Mozilla notes that detection is not perfect. You can choose a different default under Settings → Search after removing any suspicious add-on.
The Bottom Line
Set the search engine you want, then investigate what changes it back. Remove suspicious extensions first, uninstall related Windows or Mac applications second, and reset Chrome only after the cause has been removed. If the change affects multiple browsers or returns after every restart, treat it as an unwanted-software problem rather than a simple Yahoo preference.
