Choose Suno when you need a complete song workspace with vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, editing, and stem export. Choose Udio when prompt-led vocal or instrumental generation, lyric editing, voice references, and timeline-style refinement matter most. For either service, write instrumental prompts around arrangement, texture, tempo, and structure; write vocal prompts around singer direction, lyric intent, phrasing, and production. Instrumental And Vocal Prompts Need Different Information
Instrumental Prompts
Keep the prompt focused on what the listener should hear without a singer: lead instrument, supporting parts, energy, tempo feel, structure, and the occasion. State “instrumental” and “no vocals” if silence from a singer is essential, then describe the opening, build, peak, and ending.
Template: “Instrumental [mood] track for [occasion], led by [instrument], with [supporting instruments], [tempo feel], [arrangement arc], [mix character], no vocals.”
Example: “Instrumental reflective piano and strings for a quiet memorial video, slow pulse, sparse opening, gradual orchestral lift, restrained percussion, warm natural room sound, no vocals.”

Vocal Prompts
Specify the singer’s role, emotional delivery, lyric subject, language, section structure, and backing arrangement. If you already have lyrics, paste them in the lyric field where the service provides one; otherwise, describe the message and ask for a verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and bridge in the prompt.
Template: “[Vocal style] performance about [subject], [emotional delivery], [language], [section structure], backed by [instruments], with [production direction].”
Example: “Intimate conversational vocal about starting over after a move, restrained verse and soaring but clear chorus, English lyrics, two verses and a bridge, fingerpicked guitar with soft strings, close vocal production.”

Start With The Listener And Occasion
Write the use case first: background for a tutorial, a reflective memorial piece, a workout cue, or a short game scene. This keeps the arrangement proportional to the moment instead of producing a generic song.

Name the lead sound, supporting layers, energy curve, and ending. Add duration only when the platform or your workflow lets you control it; neither product entry establishes a universal prompt-based duration command.
Refine One Variable At A Time
For Suno, use its documented editing, remixing, extensions, or section replacement after the first generation. For Udio, use lyric-free instrumental wording, then refine the result through its documented audio transformations and Sessions tools. Change one element per revision, such as “less percussion” or “brighter piano,” so you can identify which instruction helped.

How To Build A Vocal Track
Separate Lyric Intent From Delivery
Describe what the words should communicate before describing the singer’s energy. Then state phrasing, intimacy, intensity, and section contrast. This gives the generator two separate targets to interpret.
Use Section Labels In Lyrics
When supplying lyrics, mark sections such as [Verse], [Chorus], and [Bridge]. Keep each section’s line length reasonably consistent so the requested phrasing is easier to follow. These are writing practices, not guaranteed controls.
Revise The Problem Section
Suno supports section replacement, extensions, remixing, and editing. Udio supports lyric editing, style shaping, audio transformation, and Sessions refinement. Regenerate only the weak section when the service’s workflow allows it, then compare the transition into the next section.

For either service, obtain permission before using another person’s voice, lyrics, or uploaded recording. The entries do not establish a covers or sample policy, and Udio’s voice-reference feature does not by itself establish consent. Check each platform’s current terms for voice references, covers, samples, uploads, and commercial use.
Practical Recommendation
For an instrumental cue that must be edited and exported as parts, Suno has the more clearly documented path because it lists stem export, while Udio currently disables stem export. For a vocal idea that depends on prompt-led generation and repeated lyric or style refinement, Udio’s listed lyric, voice-reference, transformation, and Sessions tools are a strong match. In both cases, begin with a tightly scoped prompt, make one revision at a time, and verify the plan and rights terms before using the track publicly.
