To upload your own song to Suno, use Suno’s audio-upload workflow, select the uploaded recording as the source, then create an extension from the point where you want new music to begin. Suno lists audio uploads of up to 8 minutes on its Free Plan and supports extensions, editing, remixing, section replacement, and stem export. The practical method is to keep your source recording clean, describe exactly what should happen after the existing ending, and extend in short sections so you can reject weak results without rebuilding the whole song.
Before You Upload Your Song
Confirm That You Control The Recording
Upload only audio you are entitled to use. If another person wrote the song, performed a vocal, supplied a sample, or owns the recording, obtain the needed permission before uploading. Suno’s Free Plan does not include commercial rights, so check the rights attached to your Suno plan before releasing an extension, remix, or export commercially. Platform terms can change; read the current Suno terms for your account.
Keep The Source Within Suno’s Limit
The Free Plan lists an 8-minute audio-upload limit. Trim silence at the beginning and end, and render one clear version of the song rather than a project folder with multiple takes. Keep a copy of the original file so you can return to the same edit if an extension changes the musical direction.
Prepare A Musical Brief
Write down the section where the extension should start, the length you need, and what must stay recognizable. For example: “Continue after the second chorus for 16 bars; keep the lead vocal out for eight bars; preserve the minor-key mood; bring the vocal back for a final chorus.” This gives you a concrete target instead of a vague request for “more music.”

How To Upload Your Own Song In Suno
- Open Suno. Use the Suno website or one of its listed mobile apps, then sign in to the account whose plan you intend to use.
- Start the audio-upload action. In the creation area, choose the option for using or uploading your own audio. Interface wording can change, so select the control that explicitly refers to an uploaded recording rather than starting a text-only generation.
- Select your song file. Choose the prepared recording and wait for Suno to finish processing it. Do not close the page while the upload is still being handled.
- Check the imported source. Listen from the beginning and near the intended continuation point. Confirm that the song is the correct take and that the ending gives Suno a useful musical handoff.
- Choose the extension or continuation command. Use Suno’s extension feature on the uploaded song. If Suno presents a timeline or start-point control, place the start point slightly before the musical handoff so the new passage has enough context.
- Describe only the change you want. State the section, instrumentation, energy, and vocal instruction. A useful prompt is: “Extend this song after the second chorus with an eight-bar drum-and-bass break, keep the existing tempo and emotional tone, then return to a bigger final chorus with layered backing vocals.”
- Generate alternatives. Create more than one continuation when available, then compare the first bar, the transition, and the final bar. Keep the version whose entrance sounds most connected to your recording.
- Save the accepted continuation. Name it with the source section and attempt number, such as “Second chorus extension 03.” Clear names make it easier to return to an earlier result.
How To Make The Extension Sound Intentional
Use A Short, Specific Prompt
Prompts work best when they explain musical function. Ask for “a restrained verse-to-chorus lift,” “a four-bar turnaround before the final chorus,” or “an instrumental outro that gradually removes the drums.” Avoid listing unrelated genres or instruments that fight the character of your uploaded song. If you need a stylistic change, describe the new arrangement while asking Suno to preserve the song’s core mood and tempo.
Extend In Sections
Build a long ending from smaller decisions: first add the transition, then extend the chorus or instrumental passage, and finally create the outro. This makes it easier to discard one weak section without losing a good earlier continuation. Keep a note of each accepted section and the exact point where the next extension begins.

Use Section Replacement When One Moment Fails
Suno supports section replacement as well as extensions. Use replacement when the rest of the song works but one phrase, transition, or chorus entrance does not. Preserve the surrounding arrangement in your instruction and identify the exact musical job of the replacement, such as “replace only the two bars before the final chorus with a rising fill.”
Export Stems Only After The Arrangement Is Settled
Suno lists stem export among its supported editing capabilities. Treat stems as a finishing step: first choose the continuation and resolve transitions, then export the parts you need for later mixing. Troubleshoot A Weak Continuation
- The extension changes the song’s identity: shorten the requested section and restate which mood, tempo, melody, or instrumentation must remain.
- The join sounds abrupt: start the extension slightly earlier, ask for a transition or turnaround, and compare the first few seconds of each alternative.
- The vocal enters at the wrong time: state “instrumental only” or specify the exact bar where the vocal should return.
- You reach a plan limit: check the credits, upload allowance, download allowance, and rights for your Suno plan before generating more versions.
- You want to revise only one passage: use section replacement instead of extending the entire song again.
Final Checklist Before Export
- Listen across the join with the volume unchanged.
- Confirm that the extension starts and ends where your arrangement requires.
- Check vocals, lyrics, and samples for material you do not have permission to use.
- Verify that your Suno plan permits the intended commercial use and download.
- Keep the uploaded source and the accepted extension under clear filenames.
