The most private AI chatbot is not universal. Choose the service whose training controls, retention limits, human-review rules, memory behavior, integrations, and workplace governance match your use case. A model-improvement switch alone is not enough: turning it off can stop some future chats from training, while leaving history, temporary-service retention, feedback data, memories, or connected-app copies untouched.
Start with the privacy questions that actually matter
“Can this chatbot train on my conversations?” is only one part of the decision. Before choosing a service, answer these questions for the exact app, account, country, plan, and workspace you will use:
- Model improvement: Are conversations used to improve models by default, and does an opt-out cover only future chats?
- Retention: How long do ordinary, temporary, deleted, feedback-linked, or safety-flagged conversations remain available?
- Human access: Can employees, contractors, or reviewers inspect chats for safety, abuse prevention, or service improvement?
- Temporary mode: Does it bypass history and memory, or does the provider still retain a copy for a limited period?
- Personalization: Are saved memories governed separately from chat deletion and model training?
- Integrations: Do files, voice recordings, browser context, location, or connected services create additional copies or permissions?
- Workplace control: Can an administrator enforce retention and access rules, and do the contract and plan match the settings shown in the app?
These controls address different risks. A chat can be excluded from model training yet remain in your history. Deleting the visible conversation may not remove a separately saved memory or a copy reviewed for safety. Treat every feature that receives your data as its own decision.
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini: privacy controls compared
The following comparison reflects the providers’ official documentation available in 2026. It is not an independent security test or a universal privacy ranking.

How ChatGPT’s privacy settings work
Turn off model improvement without deleting history
Open Settings → Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says the setting applies across devices when you are signed in. It affects new conversations; existing saved chats still appear in your history. In the provider’s words, “Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not delete or hide saved chats.” OpenAI Data controls
Use this setting when your main concern is future model training, then separately delete conversations you no longer need. Do not describe the switch as a deletion control.
Use Temporary Chat for a narrower data trail
Temporary Chat does not appear in history and does not create or update memories. It is excluded from model improvement while temporary, but OpenAI may retain it for up to 30 days for safety. If you save the conversation, it becomes a regular chat and the temporary protections no longer describe its status. OpenAI Data controls

Do not use feedback casually
On individual plans, submitting a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can make the complete associated conversation eligible for model training even when you opted out of general improvement. Avoid attaching feedback to a sensitive conversation unless you accept that additional use. OpenAI documents different treatment for Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces: prompts, responses, and files are not used to improve models by default unless the organization has a separate agreement, and feedback does not permit training on the associated conversation for those listed workspaces. Separate chat deletion from memory deletion
Memory is an independent control. OpenAI’s Privacy Center says deleting a chat does not automatically delete a memory saved from that chat. Review and remove saved memories separately, and remember that workspace administrators or organization policies may control available features, retention, and review. OpenAI Privacy Center

Choose Model Improvement deliberately
Anthropic’s consumer guidance, dated March 16, 2026, says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models if you allow it, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or if you explicitly opt in another way. Use Incognito for conversations you do not want used for improvement
Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito status addresses model improvement; check the current retention rules for the account or organization as well. Anthropic model-training guidance
Understand the five-year feedback exception
Submitting feedback can result in the whole related consumer conversation being stored in a secured backend for up to five years. If a conversation contains personal, confidential, or regulated information, treat feedback as a separate disclosure rather than a harmless quality signal. Anthropic model-training guidance
Distinguish API, organization, and Enterprise retention
Anthropic says commercial API inputs and outputs are automatically deleted from the backend within 30 days, with exceptions for longer-retention services, contractual terms, policy enforcement, or law. Enterprise owners can configure custom retention, but the minimum is 30 days. Project retention takes precedence over chats in that project, and projects remain indefinitely by default until an owner changes the setting. Ask an administrator to verify the effective policy instead of assuming consumer Incognito behavior applies to a managed account. How Gemini Apps’ privacy settings work
Control Keep Activity and auto-delete
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub lets signed-in users review and delete activity, change auto-delete, and decide whether data is used to improve Google AI. The default auto-delete period is 18 months; available alternatives are 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Use temporary chats when 72-hour retention is acceptable
Google says temporary chats are not used to train its AI models and are retained for 72 hours to provide responses and help protect Google, users, and the public. Account for human review and feedback context
Google says a subset of chats can be reviewed by human reviewers. Reviewed chats disconnected from an account may remain for up to three years, and deleting Gemini activity does not delete those reviewed copies. Feedback may include the last 24 hours of chat context plus included uploads or connected-app content. Check other Google services separately
Web & App Activity, Location History, and other Google settings may continue to save information through their own services. A Gemini setting cannot be treated as a master switch for every Google account data stream. Google Gemini Apps Privacy Hub

- Classify the use. Decide whether the account is personal, work-managed, or connected to regulated data. A personal temporary chat and an organization-wide deployment require different controls.
- Identify the exact product surface. Record the app, plan, region, sign-in type, and whether you are using consumer chat, an API, an Enterprise workspace, a project, voice, file uploads, or connected apps.
- Turn off eligible model improvement. Use the provider’s current control and verify that it applies to the account and workspace you are actually using. Opting out generally governs future conversations, not prior history.
- Read temporary-mode retention. Write down the provider’s stated period and exceptions. ChatGPT may retain temporary chats up to 30 days for safety; Gemini temporary or activity-off chats remain for 72 hours; Claude Incognito excludes chats from model improvement, while organization retention depends on the applicable policy.
- Plan for feedback. Do not submit thumbs-up, thumbs-down, ratings, bug reports, or examples containing sensitive material until you know what context is attached and how long it may be retained.
- Audit personalization and integrations. Check saved memories, files, voice, browser context, location, and every connected app. Remove saved memories separately from chats and revoke integrations you no longer need.
- Delete and verify. Delete conversations, clear activity, and review export or account-history tools. Deletion may not remove safety-reviewed copies, backups, or data held by a connected service.
- For work, obtain written confirmation. Ask the administrator for the retention period, human-access process, integration rules, project defaults, legal basis, and contract governing the precise plan. Confirm who can search, export, or review prompts and files.
- Minimize what you submit. Remove names, account numbers, credentials, proprietary code, health details, and other identifiers. Use synthetic examples or redaction when the task does not require the original data.
Personal accounts versus workplace deployments
Personal use
For a personal account, the practical baseline is to disable model improvement, use a temporary or Incognito mode when appropriate, avoid feedback on sensitive chats, and manage history and memory separately. These actions reduce exposure but do not create zero retention or zero human access.
Workplace use
Managed accounts add governance that an individual cannot override. OpenAI documents Business, Enterprise, and Edu content as not used for training by default, subject to a separate agreement. Anthropic Enterprise provides owner-configured retention with a 30-day minimum, while projects are retained indefinitely by default until changed. Common privacy mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing “not used for training” with “not stored.” Training exclusion does not erase history or temporary-service copies.
- Deleting a chat but leaving its memory. Saved personalization can persist independently; inspect the memory control.
- Assuming temporary means instantaneous deletion. Published periods still apply: up to 30 days for ChatGPT safety retention and 72 hours for Gemini temporary or activity-off chats.
- Sending feedback on a confidential conversation. Feedback can attach broader context and trigger longer retention, including up to five years for a Claude consumer conversation and possible training use for an individual ChatGPT conversation.
- Ignoring connected services. An uploaded file or linked app may retain its own copy under separate terms.
- Applying consumer rules to an Enterprise project. Organization projects, APIs, and administrator policies can have different defaults and retention precedence.
- Assuming one country’s interface is universal. Features and controls can vary by account, country, plan, administrator, and product surface; verify the labels you see before entering sensitive data.
What the official documentation does—and does not—prove
The published pages establish provider-described settings, retention periods, and exceptions. They do not provide an independent comparison of encryption, a universal security score, every contract term, or the real-world frequency of human review. Vendor pages can change, so recheck the cited policy immediately before a high-sensitivity deployment and obtain legal or security advice where required.
For most readers, the best choice is the service whose controls can be found, understood, and enforced for the actual account—not the service with the shortest headline retention number. Stronger privacy comes from combining an appropriate plan with limited data collection, deliberate temporary use, separate deletion of memories and chats, cautious feedback, and administrator oversight.
