Browser updates matter because malicious web content can sometimes use CPU side-channel behavior to infer data that browser security boundaries are meant to protect. But a browser patch is only one layer: depending on the vulnerability and device, operating-system updates and processor firmware or microcode may also be needed.
How a CPU vulnerability can affect browser users
Modern processors may execute instructions speculatively before a program’s control flow is settled. Although a speculative result can be discarded, its effects may leave measurable traces, such as timing differences. A side-channel attack attempts to infer information from those traces.
A browser is relevant because it runs code supplied by websites and enforces boundaries between sites. In its January 2018 advisory, Mozilla reported that Microsoft Vulnerability Research had extended the attack to browser JavaScript engines and demonstrated possible reading of data from other websites or from the browser itself, potentially violating the same-origin policy. Mozilla’s advisory explains the browser-specific risk.
This does not mean every CPU side-channel attack can be launched remotely through an ordinary webpage, or that all processors and browsers are affected alike. Microsoft’s 2018 overview said the Spectre and Meltdown class affected AMD, ARM, and Intel CPUs to varying degrees; that page’s assessment was tied to its 2018 publication date. Microsoft’s overview is historical context, not a current compatibility list.

What browser updates can change
Browser vendors can add defenses within the browser, including changes to timing behavior, JavaScript engines, and the way web content is separated into processes. These measures can reduce exposure, but they do not rewrite or replace processor-level fixes.
Timing and JavaScript mitigations
In January 2018, Mozilla reduced the precision of the performance.now() timer and disabled SharedArrayBuffer, which could serve as a high-resolution timer source. The advisory listed Firefox 57.0.4 and Firefox ESR 52.6 as fixed releases at that time. Mozilla described the changes as partial, short-term mitigations while work continued to address information leakage closer to its source. Site Isolation and process boundaries
Chromium’s Site Isolation design puts content from different sites into separate renderer processes, limiting how much cross-site data can be exposed if a renderer is vulnerable. The Chromium Project describes the goal this way: “This page describes our ‘site isolation’ efforts to improve Chrome to use sandboxed renderer processes as a security boundary between web sites, even in the presence of vulnerabilities in the renderer process.” Read the Site Isolation Design Document.
The document records historical rollout milestones: Site Isolation was enabled by default for all sites on desktop in Chrome 67, and on Android devices with at least 2 GB of RAM for sites users log into in Chrome 77. Those facts explain how browser releases can change security architecture; they are not a statement of the latest Chrome version or a guarantee about current feature status. Why browser updates are only one part of protection
Different update layers have different responsibilities. A browser update can deliver browser-level mitigations, while the operating system and, for some vulnerabilities, device firmware or processor microcode may provide additional protections. Whether a particular update applies depends on the system and vulnerability.

Microsoft’s Windows guidance says to install available Windows operating-system updates, including monthly security updates, and notes that a processor microcode or firmware update might also be required. It advises obtaining applicable firmware or microcode from the device’s original equipment manufacturer (OEM). The wording is deliberately conditional: it does not mean every device needs a firmware update for every CPU flaw. See Microsoft Support KB4457951.

What to do to reduce exposure
- Update your browser. Use its supported update mechanism and check the browser maker’s current instructions. Do not rely on the historical Firefox or Chrome version numbers in the 2018 examples as current release advice.
- Update your operating system. Apply available security updates for the supported operating system. Microsoft’s cited recommendation concerns Windows and was updated in 2019; consult the relevant vendor for current instructions on other platforms.
- Check device-manufacturer guidance. Look for firmware or processor microcode updates for your specific computer when the OEM says they apply. Availability and applicability vary by device and vulnerability.
- Leave advanced hardware and virtualization settings alone unless guidance for your configuration calls for a change. Microsoft discusses hyper-threading decisions in specific L1TF/MDS, Hyper-V, and VBS scenarios, with configuration-dependent tradeoffs. That is not a general instruction for browser users to disable hyper-threading.
- Check support status if your browser or operating system is old. Use the vendor’s current support and lifecycle guidance. An isolated browser update cannot be assumed to resolve exposure in an unsupported platform.
What these mitigations do not establish
The historical examples show why browser security maintenance matters, not that one browser release eliminates CPU side-channel risk. The sources cited here do not provide a live inventory of current CPU flaws, affected processor models, browser releases, or operating-system support status. Mitigations differ by flaw, hardware, platform, and configuration; rely on current advisories from the relevant browser, operating-system, and device vendors for a specific system.
