Leaving an iOS beta is a separate process.
Can you downgrade to the previous public iOS version?
Apple’s cited guidance does not document a general method for installing an earlier public iOS release after an update. In its iOS update and restore errors guidance, Apple says error 1015 or a message that a required resource can’t be found may indicate an attempt to install an earlier iOS version. Its stated recovery direction is to use recovery mode to restore the latest software.
That guidance does not establish which versions are available for every iPhone model, so do not assume a particular older release can be installed. If the problem is a bug or feature issue and the phone still works, check for a newer iOS update and follow Apple’s support steps for the specific symptom before considering a computer-based restore.
Choose the recovery path that fits your iPhone

If the iPhone still works, check for a fix first
- Identify whether the installed software is public or beta. If it is a beta, use the beta-exit options below rather than treating it as a routine downgrade.
- Look for a newer update. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is offered, review its details and follow the on-screen installation steps.
- Use Apple’s instructions for the symptom. A battery, connectivity, app, or startup issue may need a targeted fix; a full restore is not the first step simply because the issue appeared after an update.
If the iPhone cannot update or start, use recovery mode
Apple’s recovery instructions use Finder on supported Macs, or Apple Devices or iTunes on a PC depending on the computer’s setup. Follow Apple’s current device-specific steps in If you can’t update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch. When the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first if available and suitable for the problem. Apple says Update reinstalls iOS while preserving personal data in applicable recovery workflows; it is not a way to select an older public version.

What Update and Restore do
- Update: Reinstalls the software and may preserve personal data in the applicable recovery workflow. It is the less destructive option to try first when offered.
- Restore: Reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone. Do not select it until you have considered whether you can recover your data from a compatible backup.
Check the computer connection if recovery errors occur
If the computer cannot communicate with the iPhone or reports a connection-related restore error, check the USB connection and follow Apple’s error-specific troubleshooting. Apple recommends using the supplied cable or another Apple-certified cable for certain errors. The cable must match the iPhone’s connector and the computer’s available port; buying a cable is not a general prerequisite for updating or downgrading.
How to leave an iOS beta
Turning off Beta Updates stops the iPhone from receiving future beta versions, but it does not immediately replace the beta already installed. To leave beta software immediately, Apple’s documented route is to restore the iPhone to the current public iOS version. That process erases the device. Before restoring, check for a backup made before installing the beta. Apple warns that a backup made while using beta software may not restore to an earlier public iOS version, so recovery of that backup’s data is not guaranteed.

Having a backup does not automatically mean it can be restored to the iOS version on the iPhone. Apple says a backup may require a newer iOS version than the device currently has; in that case, the device may need to be updated before the backup can be restored. See Apple’s backup compatibility guidance and confirm that the backup is usable for the version you plan to run before choosing Restore.
