The version string alone cannot tell you whether the kernel is patched: distributions may backport security fixes without adopting the newest upstream version, and an installed kernel does not become active until you boot into it.
1. Check the kernel that is running now
Open a terminal and run:
uname -r
This prints the release of the kernel currently booted. Keep the entire output, including any suffixes; those details can distinguish distribution builds. It does not report whether that kernel has every relevant security fix. Kernel.org notes that distribution kernels may be substantially modified, so use the distribution’s package and advisory information to assess a distribution-supplied kernel (Kernel.org FAQ; Linux kernel security-bug guidance).
2. Identify your distribution and release
Update commands, package names, support windows, and the way security advisories describe fixes vary by distribution and release. On many systems, this command displays the distribution’s identification details:
cat /etc/os-release
Note the distribution name and version, then consult that release’s official security-update documentation. Do not assume commands shown for Ubuntu work on Debian, Fedora, RHEL, or another distribution.

3. Check security status through your distribution
Use the official update mechanism and security advisories for your distribution, release, and kernel package. Confirm that the release is still supported and that the repositories or subscriptions needed for security updates are enabled. A package manager reporting no available updates is not proof of security if the system is outside its support window or cannot access the appropriate repositories.
Ubuntu
Ubuntu supplies security fixes for supported releases through backported patches. As a result, a kernel’s upstream-looking version may appear older than a newer kernel.org release while still containing the relevant Ubuntu fix. Check Ubuntu’s security-update documentation and the advisory or package status for your exact release rather than comparing version numbers alone (Ubuntu security updates). Support depends on the release, component, and support tier; consult the current release-specific support information linked from Ubuntu’s documentation.

Ubuntu can notify desktop users about updates and display server notifications through MOTD. It also documents unattended security updates. These mechanisms help deliver updates, but they do not replace checking that the system’s release and update sources are appropriate.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
For RHEL, use the security-update and DNF guidance that applies to your RHEL release, and check the relevant Red Hat advisory for the package and fix status. Repository access and subscription configuration can affect which updates are available. Red Hat documents security-update workflows and reboot guidance in its RHEL 9 security-update guide. Follow instructions for your installed release rather than treating RHEL 9 directions as universal.

4. Assess a specific CVE against your system
A CVE number identifies a reported vulnerability; it does not by itself establish that your installation is exposed. Applicability can depend on the distribution’s kernel build, configuration, and use case. Look up the CVE in your distribution’s advisory for the exact release and package, and follow the vendor’s stated fixed-package or mitigation guidance. The kernel project likewise explains that CVE applicability depends on the user’s system and use case, and that distribution-specific kernel issues may need to be handled by the distribution (Linux kernel CVE guidance).
5. Install updates using the supported method
Apply kernel security updates with your distribution’s documented package manager or update interface, using repositories appropriate to the release. There is no single safe update command for every Linux system. If an advisory identifies a fix, follow its package-specific instructions; do not infer that a generic “no updates available” result means the system is covered unless its support status and update sources are correct.

6. Confirm whether a reboot is needed
Installing a new kernel package does not replace the kernel already loaded into memory. After an update, check the distribution’s reboot or restart guidance. When the vendor requires a reboot, reboot and then run uname -r again to confirm the updated kernel is active.
Ubuntu Livepatch can apply selected high- and critical-severity kernel fixes without an immediate reboot, but Ubuntu says it does not replace rebooting to upgrade to a newer kernel. Enabling Livepatch also does not enable APT security updates (Ubuntu Livepatch reboot guidance).
On RHEL, the needs-restarting utility can provide a reboot hint, while Red Hat’s advisory and package-specific guidance determine restart requirements. Consult the documentation for the installed version of the utility and RHEL release (needs-restarting manual page; RHEL 9 security-update guide).
Quick Recap
What to remember
uname -ridentifies the currently running kernel release; it does not establish patch status.- For a distribution-provided kernel, use the vendor’s release-specific advisories and support status. Backported fixes can make an older-looking version patched.
- Evaluate a CVE against the exact system and vendor advisory, not just its existence upstream.
- An installed kernel update may still require a reboot before it is running; follow the vendor’s restart guidance.
