Stable is the final Android platform release intended for normal use. A beta is a pre-release build for early access and testing. A Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) is a follow-up update with fixes and refinements; a QPR beta is a pre-release build of that update. In short, “QPR” identifies the update train, while “beta” identifies a build’s release status.

How stable, beta and QPR updates differ

Type What it is Best suited to
Stable release The final platform release published to AOSP and the wider Android ecosystem. Phone makers distribute updates to supported devices on their own schedules. People who prioritize predictable everyday use and device support.
Major-version beta A pre-release build of an upcoming Android platform release. Builds can change as testing progresses. Early adopters and developers preparing apps for the next release.
QPR A periodic follow-up release that builds on an already-launched Android version with fixes and improvements. Google describes QPRs as releases to AOSP and Pixel devices as part of Feature Drops. People receiving the finalized update through their device’s normal update channel.
QPR beta A pre-release build for an upcoming QPR. It remains beta software even though it tests a follow-up to an already-released Android version. Eligible Pixel owners who want to test refinements, and developers checking possible user-experience effects.

Google says QPRs generally do not include app-impacting API changes, but developers are still invited to test for user-experience effects. A QPR beta is therefore not the same thing as a stable QPR.

What “stable” means for Android users and developers

Google releases the final platform version to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and the wider ecosystem. Manufacturers then release updates for their own supported devices at or shortly after the platform release; this does not mean all Android phones update at once. Timing and availability depend on the manufacturer and device. Android 17 platform release overview

For app developers, the key milestone before final release is Platform Stability. Google defines it as the point when “the platform has reached final internal and external APIs, final app-facing behaviors, and final non-SDK API lists.” Earlier beta builds are useful for finding compatibility issues, but Platform Stability is the point to use for final compatibility work.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What a beta is—and what changes at Platform Stability

Android’s public beta gives early access to an upcoming major or minor platform release. The first beta-quality build and subsequent builds may include changes; developers are encouraged to test, provide feedback and watch for compatibility issues. Because APIs or app-facing behavior can change before Platform Stability, early beta software carries more uncertainty for apps and everyday use.

Platform Stability does not turn a beta into the final public release. It signals that APIs and app-facing behaviors are final for compatibility work, while the build remains part of the pre-release process.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

What QPRs add, and how QPR betas fit

QPRs are follow-up releases to an Android version that has already launched. Google describes them as quarterly releases delivered to AOSP and Pixel devices through Feature Drops. For the current Android cycle, Google’s Android 17 QPR1 release notes say QPRs do not include app-impacting API changes and offer beta images so developers can test potential effects on user experience.

A QPR beta is the testing build for one of these refinements—not a synonym for a stable QPR. Google describes QPR beta builds as suitable for general use, unlike betas for unreleased major Android versions. That description is not a guarantee that a beta is bug-free or right for every user; check the current release notes and known issues before installing.

Which update should you choose?

For a dependable everyday phone

Stay on stable software and install the normal update when your phone’s manufacturer offers it. The Android platform release and device updates do not arrive simultaneously across all brands and models.

For early access to a major release

If you have an eligible Pixel and want to try an upcoming Android release, Android Beta for Pixel provides pre-release builds. Treat them as testing software: review known issues and back up your data before enrolling.

For app compatibility testing

Use early beta builds to discover potential behavior changes. Do final compatibility work at Platform Stability, when Google says APIs, app-facing behaviors and non-SDK API lists are final.

For checking QPR refinements

Developers can use QPR beta images to assess whether upcoming refinements affect the user experience. The expectation that QPRs generally avoid app-impacting API changes does not rule out user-facing effects worth testing.

How the Pixel beta cycle works

Android Beta for Pixel is limited to supported Pixel devices. Google says enrollment provides regular OTA updates across the program’s release cycle, including QPRs. The program’s current guidance describes four stable public releases in a cycle: the official platform release followed by three QPRs. That count describes the Pixel program cycle, not a guaranteed schedule for every Android manufacturer or distribution channel. Android 17 QPR2 enrollment guidance · Android Beta for Pixel release cycle

Build dates, supported devices, OTA availability and release schedules can change. Use the current version-specific Android release and enrollment pages for up-to-date details rather than treating a particular beta build date as a standing schedule.

Enrolling in or leaving Android Beta for Pixel

Before joining, confirm that your Pixel is eligible and back up data. Google’s enrollment guidance explains the current process and available builds: Android 17 QPR2 enrollment guidance.

Google’s program page says that applying a stable release update can let you opt out of future beta updates without a data wipe for a limited period. That option ends once you apply the next beta update. Check the live program instructions before opting out, since the available path and timing depend on the current cycle. Android Beta for Pixel
