Shopify is the best overall choice for most new and growing online stores because it combines hosting, storefront design, checkout, inventory, multichannel selling, and support in one managed platform. BigCommerce is usually the stronger fit for complex catalogs and B2B operations. Wix and Squarespace suit design-led small businesses, while WooCommerce is the better choice when ownership and customization matter more than convenience.
This list uses “e-commerce hosting provider” broadly. Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger Ecommerce, and Shift4Shop are mainly hosted commerce platforms. WooCommerce is free, open-source software that runs on WordPress and requires hosting; Bluehost is a managed WordPress/WooCommerce host; and WordPress.com Commerce is another managed WooCommerce route. That distinction matters because a $0 software license does not mean a $0 store.

What “e-commerce hosting” means in this comparison
There are two fundamentally different ways to run an online store:
- Hosted or managed platforms: Shopify, BigCommerce, Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger Ecommerce, and Shift4Shop provide the hosting infrastructure and much of the store software. You generally configure the store rather than maintain the server.
- Hosted WordPress with WooCommerce: WooCommerce supplies the commerce software, but you choose a host such as Bluehost, Hostinger, or another provider. You retain more control, but you also inherit more maintenance.
A hosted platform usually costs more at the software level but reduces infrastructure work. WooCommerce can be cheaper or more expensive depending on the host, extensions, theme, security, backups, developer time, and store traffic. Comparing only the monthly subscription therefore produces misleading rankings.
How to compare the real cost
Before choosing a provider, estimate the store’s total operating cost rather than comparing advertised entry prices. Include:
- Billing term: monthly, annual, 36-month, and 48-month prices are not interchangeable.
- Renewal price: a promotional rate may apply only to the first term.
- Payment processing: card-network and payment-provider fees normally apply even when a platform advertises 0% platform fees.
- Platform transaction fees: some plans charge an additional percentage when an order is processed through a particular payment setup.
- GMV or product limits: sales-volume thresholds can force a plan change, while product, storage, or feature limits can require an upgrade.
- Apps and extensions: subscriptions for email marketing, subscriptions, reviews, shipping, search, tax, analytics, and wholesale features can become a significant recurring expense.
- Domain and email: check whether the first-year domain is free and what renewal costs.
- Maintenance and migration: self-hosted stores may require paid updates, troubleshooting, backups, security work, or developer assistance.
For a simple illustration, U.S. Squarespace Payments lists standard card processing at 2.9% plus $0.30. On 100 orders averaging $50, that is $5,000 in sales and approximately $175 in processing fees before any other charges: $145 in percentage fees plus $30 in per-order fees. This is an illustration of how order volume affects cost, not a universal rate for every provider, card type, country, or payment method.

Shopify is the safest general recommendation when the priority is launching quickly without assembling hosting, checkout, security, inventory, and integrations yourself. Its platform covers the online storefront, checkout, product management, social and marketplace selling, and in-person selling. The ecosystem also gives merchants access to a large range of apps and themes.
Shopify’s published Basic price is $39 per month when paid monthly or $29 per month when paid yearly. The plan includes a full online store and unlimited products. Higher Grow, Advanced, and Plus tiers are available for merchants that need more staff accounts, reporting, automation, or enterprise capabilities. POS Pro is an additional option for more advanced in-person retail features.
Review the current Shopify plans before subscribing, especially if your business will sell through multiple channels or use a physical point of sale.
Why Shopify ranks first
- Fast setup with little server or WordPress maintenance.
- Integrated checkout, storefront, inventory, and multichannel selling.
- A mature app ecosystem for specialized requirements.
- A practical path from a first store to a larger operation.
What to budget beyond the plan
The subscription is not the complete cost. Payment-processing rates vary by merchant location and plan. Depending on the payment arrangement, third-party payment-provider fees may also apply. Apps can add recurring costs, and a store that needs advanced reporting, automation, or staff permissions may need a higher plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Shopify if: you value speed, an integrated system, and minimal infrastructure work. Look elsewhere if: server-level control, highly unusual checkout logic, or deep ownership of the underlying code is more important than convenience.
2. BigCommerce — best for scaling catalogs and complex commerce
BigCommerce is the strongest choice in this list for established retailers, complex catalogs, B2B workflows, and merchants that want substantial commerce functionality built into the platform rather than assembled from many apps. It is a hosted platform, so the merchant does not manage the underlying server, but its commercial model deserves closer attention than a basic monthly-price comparison.
BigCommerce’s 2026 structure uses Core, Growth, Scale, and Performance tiers. Its published annual-billing prices are:
Rank #2
- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Core: $29 per month, targeting businesses up to $30,000 in trailing-twelve-month inclusive GMV.
- Growth: $79 per month, targeting up to $100,000 in trailing-twelve-month inclusive GMV.
- Scale: $299 per month, with a stated monthly GMV cap of $33,333 before the described overage mechanism.
- Performance: custom pricing starting at $1,499 per month billed annually.
Check the current BigCommerce pricing against your trailing sales, not just your expected monthly subscription budget.

BigCommerce announced a pricing and payments update beginning June 1, 2026. Under the announced structure, self-serve plans can incur an Open Payment Provider Fee on orders processed through open payment providers, while embedded payment providers are treated differently. The exact effect depends on the merchant’s plan, payment setup, and GMV. A store should model these costs before migration rather than assume that the displayed plan price is the final platform cost.
Choose BigCommerce if: catalog complexity, B2B requirements, or built-in commerce tools outweigh the appeal of a simpler site builder. Choose Shopify instead if: the fastest setup and broad app ecosystem matter more than BigCommerce’s scaling-oriented structure.
3. Wix — best for design-led small businesses
Wix is a good fit when the store is part of a broader business website that also needs content, appointments, services, marketing pages, or a highly visual editing experience. Its visual builder lets a small business control presentation without requiring WordPress development skills.
On Wix’s U.S. pricing display, annual-billing prices are approximately $29 per month for Core, $39 for Business, and $159 for Business Elite. Wix also offers a free tier, but paid e-commerce plans are required to accept payments. Prices can vary by geography and promotional period.

Strengths
- Simple visual editing for owners who want to manage the site themselves.
- Strong fit for content, appointments, services, and products in one website.
- Hosting, security infrastructure, support, and the site builder are bundled.
Limitations
Wix becomes less compelling when a store needs very deep catalog operations, complex wholesale rules, or extensive commerce-specific workflows. The cheapest displayed price may also depend on an annual commitment or promotion, so confirm the renewal amount before purchase.
Choose Wix if: brand presentation and general-business website features are as important as selling products. Choose a commerce-first platform if: inventory, B2B pricing, high-volume operations, or complex checkout logic dominate the project.
4. Squarespace — best for polished smaller stores
Squarespace is particularly suitable for creators, boutiques, service businesses with products, and smaller catalogs where visual presentation and publishing quality matter as much as back-office depth. Current plans can support physical products, digital products, courses, memberships, and services.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Squarespace’s current plan documentation uses Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced. Some existing customers may still see legacy Commerce Basic or Commerce Advanced plans. This transition means two merchants may encounter different plan names or fee descriptions, so identify the plan generation shown in your account before comparing prices.
Under the current plan documentation, Basic may carry a 2% commerce transaction fee, while Core, Plus, and Advanced have 0% commerce transaction fees as the new plans roll out. Legacy Commerce Basic and Commerce Advanced plans also show 0% commerce transaction fees. That platform fee is separate from payment processing. U.S. Squarespace Payments lists standard card processing at 2.9% plus $0.30, with other rates or surcharges possible for certain card types and international transactions.

Review the current Squarespace commerce plans and check whether your account is being offered the current or legacy plan family.
Choose Squarespace if: the store is visually led, the catalog is manageable, and content publishing is central. Choose Shopify or BigCommerce if: the operation needs deeper inventory, selling-channel, or commerce administration tools.
5. WooCommerce — best for control, ownership, and customization
WooCommerce is not a conventional all-in-one hosting plan. It is free, open-source commerce software for WordPress. The core platform has no monthly subscription and no revenue share, but the merchant chooses and pays for hosting, payment services, themes, extensions, security, backups, and development.
WooCommerce’s own cost guidance estimates hosting for most stores at roughly $25–$350 per month and extensions at approximately $29–$299 per year per extension. Those ranges are broad because a small catalog and a busy, customized store have very different infrastructure needs.
Current server requirements
For WooCommerce 10.8 and later, the published server recommendations include:
- WordPress 6.9 or later
- PHP 8.3 or later
- MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or later
- HTTPS
- At least 256 MB of WordPress memory
These are not optional details for a serious store. An inexpensive host that falls short on PHP, database, memory, backups, staging, or support can create more cost than it saves.
Recommended Free Tools
If you want WordPress flexibility without sourcing every infrastructure component yourself, compare managed WooCommerce hosting options carefully. “Managed” varies by provider: confirm who handles updates, malware cleanup, backups, performance tuning, staging, and recovery.
When WooCommerce is the better decision
- You need ownership of your data and code.
- The site has specialized catalog, checkout, membership, subscription, or content workflows.
- You already have WordPress expertise or a developer.
- You are willing to manage compatibility between WordPress, WooCommerce, themes, plugins, and PHP.
Choose WooCommerce if: control and extensibility justify ongoing maintenance. Do not choose it solely because the core download is free: the complete store may cost more than a hosted platform once hosting, extensions, security, and labor are included.
6. Hostinger — best low-cost entry point
Hostinger belongs in two different parts of this comparison because it sells two different kinds of products:
- Hostinger Ecommerce: an all-in-one commerce product for physical products, digital products, services, print-on-demand, and subscriptions.
- Hostinger e-commerce hosting: hosting for software such as WooCommerce, PrestaShop, OpenCart, or custom PHP stores.
Hostinger Ecommerce’s displayed plans include Starter at $2.99 per month, Growth at $7.99, and Scale at $19.99. These are promotional or annual-term prices and have separate renewal prices. Hostinger states that the Ecommerce product charges 0% platform transaction fees.
For software-based stores, the e-commerce hosting page lists Cloud Startup at $7.99 per month on a 48-month term, renewing at $25.99 per month. That offer includes managed WordPress/WooCommerce support, CDN, SSL, migration, and support features.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Compare the all-in-one Hostinger Ecommerce product separately from its WooCommerce hosting. The first reduces configuration work; the second gives you a WordPress/WooCommerce installation that still needs software and plugin management.
Choose Hostinger if: price is the decisive factor, the catalog is small, and you understand the limitations of a long promotional commitment. Check carefully: renewal pricing, backups, support scope, resource limits, and whether the plan is a builder or hosting for software.
7. Bluehost — best beginner-oriented managed WooCommerce host
Bluehost is aimed at beginners who want WordPress and WooCommerce with a guided setup, bundled hosting, and support. Its e-commerce offering includes WooCommerce, a free domain and SSL, CDN, malware scanning and removal, and support.
Bluehost’s current pricing page displays eCommerce Essentials at approximately $6.14 per month on a 36-month introductory promotion, renewing at approximately $26.99 per month. A separate Bluehost WooCommerce comparison page presents plans starting at $6.99 per month, which is why a price quote should always identify the page, billing term, promotion, and date.
Bluehost support documentation lists eCommerce Essentials renewal pricing at $32.99 monthly, $24.99 per month on a 12-month term, and $21.99 per month on a 36-month term, while noting that prices can change.
Before choosing Bluehost WooCommerce hosting, write down both the introductory and renewal totals. A low first-term price is useful for testing a business, but it should not be mistaken for the long-term cost.
Choose Bluehost if: you are new to WordPress and value guided onboarding. Choose another host if: you need advanced infrastructure controls, a highly specialized WooCommerce stack, or a clearly predictable long-term price.

8. Shift4Shop — best U.S.-specific value when payment eligibility fits
Shift4Shop is a commerce-first platform with a particularly compelling offer for qualifying U.S. merchants. Its U.S. plans page lists Basic Store at $29 per month, Plus Store at $79, and Pro Store at $229. It also advertises a free End-to-End Ecommerce plan with unlimited staff, unlimited products, and no additional platform transaction fees.
The important qualification is that the free plan is limited to U.S. merchants and tied to the Shift4 Payments ecosystem. Payment eligibility and underwriting matter. “Free” here does not mean any merchant in any country can host a store without payment-related conditions, nor does it mean that ordinary payment-processing costs disappear.
Review the Shift4Shop plans only after confirming that your business location, product category, and payment setup qualify.
Choose Shift4Shop if: you are a qualifying U.S. merchant comfortable using Shift4 Payments and want to minimize additional platform fees. Choose another provider if: you are outside the U.S., need an independent payment-provider arrangement, or want a globally consistent plan structure.

Two worthwhile alternatives
Ecwid — best for adding a store to an existing website
Ecwid is a useful alternative when you already have a WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or other website and want to embed a store rather than replace the site. Its official pricing information describes plans with no Ecwid transaction fees, unlimited bandwidth and storage, and product limits that increase from 10 products on Starter to unlimited products on Unlimited.
Ecwid is worth considering for a lightweight catalog or multichannel selling project, but its pricing changed for certain customers after March 2, 2026. Confirm the current plan and product limit before migrating.
See the current Ecwid pricing if embedding a store into an existing site is more important than moving to a dedicated commerce platform.
WordPress.com Commerce — managed WooCommerce without choosing a separate host
WordPress.com Commerce is another managed WooCommerce route. Its current U.S. pricing display shows Commerce at $70 per month, or lower effective monthly rates on longer billing terms. The Commerce offering includes WordPress hosting, unlimited products and orders, WooCommerce features, marketing tools, and 24/7 support. It may suit a content-heavy publisher or brand that wants WordPress capabilities but does not want to assemble hosting separately.
Which provider should you choose?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest route to a polished store | Shopify | Hosted storefront, checkout, inventory, selling channels, and a broad app ecosystem. |
| Complex catalog, B2B, or scaling operations | BigCommerce | Commerce-focused plans and a model designed around growing sales volume, though GMV and payment fees need modeling. |
| Brand design and general business tools | Wix | Visual editing plus content, services, appointments, and commerce. |
| Small, visually led store | Squarespace | Strong presentation and content tools with support for several product types. |
| Ownership and custom workflows | WooCommerce | Open-source software, code control, and a large WordPress extension ecosystem. |
| Lowest apparent entry price | Hostinger | Low promotional rates, provided you distinguish its Ecommerce product from WooCommerce hosting and budget for renewal. |
| Beginner WordPress onboarding | Bluehost | Managed WooCommerce-oriented setup and support, with careful attention to renewal pricing. |
| Payment-linked U.S. value | Shift4Shop | Potentially free End-to-End Ecommerce plan for eligible U.S. merchants using Shift4 Payments. |
| Store embedded in an existing site | Ecwid | Designed to add a store to WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or another website. |
Pre-purchase checklist
- Write down your country and currency. Payment rates, taxes, plan availability, and eligibility are not universal.
- Calculate first-year and renewal-year cost separately. Include the full prepaid term for 12-, 36-, or 48-month offers.
- Estimate GMV and order count. Check whether sales thresholds, per-order fees, or payment-provider fees change the recommendation.
- List required features. Include subscriptions, digital goods, memberships, wholesale pricing, tax automation, shipping integrations, marketplace selling, POS, and multiple staff accounts.
- Price extensions before choosing WooCommerce. A free core can require several paid extensions to match a hosted platform.
- Check payment eligibility. This is essential for Shift4Shop’s free U.S. plan and relevant to every provider’s payment processing.
- Plan migration and recovery. Ask how you will export products, customers, orders, content, and redirects if the store later changes platforms.
- Test the checkout on a phone. A platform’s feature list does not guarantee that your specific theme, payment method, shipping rules, and apps work together correctly.
Bottom line
Start with Shopify unless you have a clear reason not to: it is the most balanced option for a typical new or growing store. Choose BigCommerce for complex, scaling, or B2B commerce; Wix or Squarespace when design and content lead the project; and WooCommerce when ownership and customization justify technical responsibility.
Hostinger and Bluehost are budget-oriented WordPress or commerce entry points, but promotional pricing must be separated from renewal cost. Shift4Shop can be unusually attractive for qualifying U.S. merchants, while Ecwid is the more natural answer when you need to embed a store into an existing website.
Recheck every price, payment condition, product limit, and plan name immediately before subscribing. In 2026, billing terms, renewal rates, payment-provider rules, and plan structures are too changeable for an old screenshot or a single “starting at” figure to be a reliable budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best e-commerce hosting provider for beginners?
Shopify is the best general beginner choice because it combines hosting, storefront tools, checkout, inventory, and support. Bluehost is a better beginner option when you specifically want WordPress and WooCommerce.

What is the cheapest e-commerce hosting provider?
There is no universal cheapest provider. Hostinger Ecommerce displays very low promotional prices, while Shift4Shop advertises a free plan for qualifying U.S. merchants using Shift4 Payments. Renewal pricing, billing term, payment fees, geography, and required add-ons can change the result.
Can I use WooCommerce without managing a server?
Yes. A managed WooCommerce host such as Bluehost or Hostinger can handle much of the hosting infrastructure, and WordPress.com Commerce is another managed route. However, confirm exactly what the provider manages, including WordPress and plugin updates, backups, security, staging, malware cleanup, and recovery.
