PicoROM can refer to two different projects: Wickerwaka’s ready-made RP2040 arcade ROM emulator, or Nick Bild’s DIY Raspberry Pi Pico circuit for emulating a 28C256 EEPROM. They are not interchangeable. If you are choosing one, first identify the project, then check the target socket’s pinout, electrical requirements, capacity and timing.

What is PicoROM?

The name is ambiguous. Wickerwaka describes its project as “an 8-bit ROM emulator in DIP-32 and DIP-28 form factors.” It is designed for arcade ROM sockets and has USB control. Nick Bild’s PicoROM is a separate DIY circuit built around a Raspberry Pi Pico that emulates an Atmel 28C256 32 KB EEPROM. The Pico board by itself is not that complete circuit.

Feature Wickerwaka PicoROM Nick Bild PicoROM
Form RP2040-based DIP-28 or DIP-32 emulator; assembled versions are described as available through the maintainer’s store. DIY circuit using one Raspberry Pi Pico and three 74LVC245AN level-shifter chips.
Target described Arcade ROM sockets; choose the board form and interface to suit the specific host. Atmel 28C256 32 KB EEPROM emulation in a 5V Vectron 65 host, according to the author.
Capacity and timing Project documentation states up to 2 Mbit (256 KB), 70 ns worst-case address-to-data access, and 40 ns worst-case output-enable-to-data delay. The README describes a 32 KB example and reports a 2 MHz host clock; it gives no directly comparable timing specification.
Operation USB command-line tools manage device settings, ROM data and firmware. Uploaded contents use RAM unless saved to flash. ROM data is compiled into an array in the program; the author reports placing code in RAM for the stated overclock.

These figures describe different designs and are not a shared benchmark. Neither a DIP package label nor a matching capacity proves compatibility: the target board’s pin assignments, signal levels, timing and reset behavior all matter.

Which PicoROM should you choose?

Choose Wickerwaka for a DIP arcade ROM emulator

Wickerwaka offers three board variants. POG is the original 32-pin design, with one tri-state reset pin, and can be powered over USB or by the host board. P28 has 28 pins, separate high and low reset pins, and split power for the microcontroller and external buffers. P32 is a 32-pin design that incorporates P28’s improvements. Variant names also identify which firmware image to use.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Before ordering or fitting a unit, compare its pinout and electrical behavior with the socket and host documentation. The stated 70 ns access figure is a project specification, not proof that every arcade board will work. Wickerwaka documentation says the assembled versions are available through the maintainer’s store, but current stock and price are not established here.

Choose Nick Bild’s project if you want the documented DIY circuit

The author describes using three 74LVC245AN 8-bit logic-level shifters to connect the Pico’s 3.3V signals to a 5V Vectron 65 host. The README says similar chips may work without modification, but it does not provide an independently validated compatibility list. Treat that as the author’s claim, not a guarantee for other EEPROM sockets or hosts.

Bild reports running the Pico at 400 MHz, explicitly outside specification and at the user’s risk. The author says the code is placed in RAM because onboard flash cannot support that clock. This is a project-specific, unsupported overclock—not a general recommendation or a supported setting.

How do I upload a ROM image to Wickerwaka PicoROM?

Use Wickerwaka’s USB command-line tooling for the firmware generation installed on the device. Its tools can enumerate and rename devices, set parameters, upload or download ROM data, and update firmware. The repository documentation describes these capabilities, but does not establish a universal command sequence for every host operating system or tool release.

  1. Identify the board variant. Check whether the device is POG, P28 or P32; use the firmware image corresponding to that variant.
  2. Match the host tool to firmware. Version 2.0 introduced a custom USB protocol in place of the emulated serial port used by 1.x. A 1.x host tool and 2.0-or-later firmware are mutually incompatible; use matching generations.
  3. Connect and enumerate the device. Use the USB tool to confirm that it sees the intended device. Multiple devices can be connected, but identify each before sending data.
  4. Set the ROM size deliberately. The project defaults to 2 Mbit. If the image is smaller, set an explicit size: the unused region is otherwise undefined.
  5. Upload the image and choose whether to save it. Uploaded contents are held in RAM. Save to flash during upload or commit the data afterward if it must survive a power loss.

An Alpha Engineering Labs guide dated 2025-05-29 notes that the tool expects a binary image rather than an Intel HEX text file and documents an SRecord conversion command. Confirm that the command applies to your installed tool version before using it; do not send a HEX text file as though it were raw ROM data.

Will PicoROM work in a DIP-28 or DIP-32 socket?

Only if the specific device variant matches the target’s physical and electrical requirements. Wickerwaka offers DIP-28 and DIP-32 forms, but pin count alone says nothing about whether address, data, control and power pins map correctly for a given host. Check the target board’s ROM documentation and the PicoROM variant’s pinout, then verify timing and signal-level requirements.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For Nick Bild’s circuit, do not infer DIP-28 or DIP-32 drop-in compatibility from the project name or from the target chip’s package. Its README describes a particular circuit and host setup, not universal socket compatibility. Raspberry Pi’s Pico-series documentation describes the board family but does not certify compatibility with either PicoROM design.

How do power, startup and reset affect Wickerwaka?

Wickerwaka documents standalone input through USB-C or 5V VCC. At startup, the device copies ROM contents from flash to RAM in approximately 8 ms; ROM accesses are ignored until the copy completes. Supply stabilization can add delay, so 8 ms is not a guaranteed total startup time. The project says systems whose reset circuitry holds the host for more than 8 ms are likely to work reliably; treat that as project guidance rather than a universal guarantee.

The external reset pin can be used from a build script, but host reset integration varies and may not be possible on every system. If reset timing is important, establish whether the host can hold or control reset appropriately and test the full startup sequence on the target hardware.

What happens to an uploaded ROM when power is removed?

For Wickerwaka, uploaded data held only in RAM disappears when power is removed. To preserve it, save it to flash during upload or commit it afterward using the project’s tooling. Also set the intended image size explicitly when it is smaller than the default 2 Mbit mode, since the remaining region is undefined.
