Evaluate a quantum-computing stock across four connected questions: what the company has demonstrated technically, whether customers are paying for it, how much capital it needs, and what its valuation assumes will happen next. A qubit count, roadmap, partnership, or headline market size cannot answer all four. Treat company-reported results and management targets as such, and compare evidence on the same date and with the same definitions.
What evidence matters when evaluating a quantum-computing company?
Quantum computing is not one uniform product category. Companies may build different kinds of hardware, sell cloud access or systems, provide services, or operate businesses only partly related to quantum computing. The right comparison begins with what each company actually does—not with a single headline metric or the word “quantum” in its name.
Identify the product and the revenue source
Check whether the company sells hardware systems, quantum-computing-as-a-service (QCaaS), professional services, software, or some combination. D-Wave describes revenue from QCaaS, professional services, and system sales in its 2025 Form 10-K. IonQ’s filing describes multiple revenue sources, including quantum products and services as well as satellite imagery and data. For a diversified company, check its segment disclosures before assuming quantum activity drives consolidated results.
That distinction matters to shareholders: a technically promising product may still represent a small part of a larger business, while a company focused on quantum may have greater exposure to the technology’s financing and commercialization risks.

Match the technical metric to the architecture
For gate-model systems, examine physical and logical qubit counts, two-qubit gate fidelity, coherence, operation speed, system scale, and error-correction results. Look for the exact system tested and whether figures come from independent evaluation or the company’s own testing.
Annealing systems are designed for a different computational approach and workload. Assess their results on clearly described optimization tasks, including the problem size, relevant business constraints, and comparison with suitable classical methods. A gate-model system and an annealing system cannot be ranked by qubit count alone: their architectures and intended workloads differ.
Even a favorable benchmark may not show an economically useful advantage. Ask whether the result is reproducible, whether the classical comparison is fair, and what happens when the analysis accounts for data loading, error correction, and classical processing around the quantum computation. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) notes potential quantum speedup for specific financial-industry problems while also identifying current limitations in hardware scale and stability and the difficulty of encoding data into quantum states.
Separate achieved results from plans
Label each technical claim by its evidence status: independently evaluated result, company-reported result, customer case study, management target, or aspiration. A roadmap can show what management intends to build; it does not establish that the milestone has been reached or will arrive on schedule.

For example, Rigetti’s March 2026 Form 10-Q cited 99.1% median two-qubit gate fidelity and an approximately 60-nanosecond gate speed for a system, based on internal testing. Its August 2026 results release set targets of approximately 1,000 qubits, approximately 99.9% two-qubit gate fidelity, and gate speeds below 50 nanoseconds over roughly three years. Those are forward-looking management targets, not demonstrated performance or a guaranteed delivery timetable.
How can you tell whether customers are adopting the technology?
Commercial announcements vary in how much they establish. A completed, paid deployment with recognized revenue is different from a pilot, grant, research collaboration, booking, backlog figure, letter of intent, or prospective partnership. For each announcement, check the amount, funding source, conditions, delivery date, cancellation rights, acceptance milestones, and whether the company has recognized the money as revenue.
Rigetti’s January 2026 filing disclosure offers a useful example of why status and timing matter: it reported an $8.4 million purchase order for a 108-qubit system for India’s C-DAC, with deployment expected in the second half of 2026. The filing described an order and an expected deployment; it did not establish that deployment had already occurred. Rigetti’s later results release also described a letter of intent for up to $100 million in government funding. A letter of intent is not the same as funding already received.
For repeatable evidence of demand, track paid customer use and recognized revenue over time, not just the count of announcements. Also check whether sales depend heavily on a few customers or on non-recurring government and development contracts. A contract can be meaningful while still being too early, conditional, or concentrated to establish a durable business.

What do the financial statements say about staying power?
Revenue growth is only one part of the financial picture, especially for companies investing heavily in research, development, and infrastructure. Review financial statements and capital structure together rather than treating a revenue figure or partnership headline as proof that a company can fund its plan.
Track operating performance and cash needs
- Follow revenue across multiple reporting periods, along with gross margin and operating cash use.
- Check cash and short-term investments, debt and commitments, financing history, and management’s stated investment needs.
- Compare basic and diluted share counts and stock-based compensation to understand potential shareholder dilution.
- Ask how many years the company’s resources might support its plans, but treat any runway estimate as dependent on assumptions about spending, revenue, and access to new capital.
D-Wave reported $24.6 million in revenue and a $100.4 million operating loss for fiscal 2025 in its 2026 Form 10-K. Its reported net loss was $355.1 million, principally affected by $270.5 million in warrant mark-to-market charges. The operating loss and net loss answer different questions: the warrant valuation charges affected the headline net-loss figure, but do not erase the company’s operating costs or cash needs. D-Wave said it expected significant losses to continue.
Rigetti’s March 2026 Form 10-Q also described continuing operating losses and expected additional losses as it invested in research, development, and infrastructure. The filing described a multi-year investment commitment associated with its Quanta collaboration. Assess liquidity and share-count developments in the current filings rather than inferring financial runway from the collaboration announcement.
Use company disclosures in context
| Company disclosure | What was reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| D-Wave, fiscal 2025; 2026 Form 10-K | $24.6 million revenue; $100.4 million operating loss; $355.1 million net loss, including $270.5 million in warrant mark-to-market charges. | Revenue does not by itself show profitability. Distinguish operating results from the warrant-related effect on net loss, and assess ongoing cash needs. |
| Rigetti, March 2026 Form 10-Q | 99.1% median two-qubit gate fidelity and approximately 60-nanosecond gate speed for the cited system, based on internal testing. | Company-reported, internally tested technical evidence; not an independent evaluation. |
| Rigetti, January 2026 order as described in its 2026 Form 10-K | $8.4 million purchase order for a 108-qubit system for C-DAC; deployment expected in the second half of 2026. | A reported order with an expected delivery window; the cited filing does not establish that deployment was complete. |
| Rigetti, August 2026 results release | Letter of intent for up to $100 million in government funding. | A stated funding intention, not evidence that the full amount had been received. |
These disclosures are examples, not a ranking of the companies: they cover different periods and different kinds of evidence, and the technical figures are not directly comparable across architectures.

How should valuation fit into the analysis?
Put valuation beside the operating evidence and the milestones that still need to be achieved. On a consistent date and using comparable accounting definitions, compare market capitalisation and enterprise value with revenue, gross profit, cash consumption, and plausible future milestones. For a pre-profit company, a price-to-earnings comparison may not be meaningful.
A large potential market is not a valuation argument on its own. A useful scenario must account for which workloads can realistically use the technology, what customers might pay, the available classical alternatives, potential margins, the capital required to scale, and the possibility of dilution. A high valuation can leave little room for delays or disappointing results even when the underlying technology continues to advance.
ESMA reported that the combined market capitalisation of four US-listed quantum-computing companies temporarily exceeded USD 65 billion in 2025 and stood at USD 45 billion on May 27, 2026. These dated aggregate figures illustrate how much investor enthusiasm and market value can move; they are not valuations of an individual company and do not establish whether any particular stock is over- or undervalued. ESMA also reported record 2025 venture-capital funding for quantum-computing startups—EUR 2 billion in the US and EUR 950 million in the EU. That is ecosystem financing context, not public-company revenue.
How do you compare companies without forcing a single winner?
Compare companies across the same decision points, while keeping architecture and intended workload in view. No one technical metric ranks every architecture or determines shareholder returns.

Keep the comparison date consistent. A technical update from one quarter, a contract from another period, and a valuation from a different date can create a misleading picture if presented as though they describe the same moment.
How should quantum exposure fit into a portfolio?
A single stock brings company-specific exposure as well as exposure to the broader technology theme. A fund may spread exposure across holdings, but its concentration, holdings, fees, and overlap with investments you already own still matter. ESMA reports that quantum-focused ETFs exist in European and US markets; their current names, holdings, fees, and availability are not established here and should be checked directly before making a decision.
The SEC’s Investor Bulletin, “Behavioral Patterns of U.S. Investors,” states: “Inadequate diversification increases the risk exposure of an investor’s portfolio.” Diversification can reduce the effect of an individual holding on a portfolio, but it does not remove market risk or guarantee against losses.
This framework can help you test whether a stock’s technical, commercial, financial, and valuation evidence fits your own risk tolerance and time horizon. It cannot establish a winning company, a dependable commercialization date, or a buy-or-sell decision.
