The architecture is reusable, but many detailed DLTK editor examples are old: the Eclipsepedia guide targets Eclipse 3.5–3.7 and DLTK 3.0, so check APIs and extension-point schemas against your target platform before copying code.
Choose your Eclipse and DLTK target first
Before creating plug-ins, decide which Eclipse release your users will run and which DLTK version is compatible with it. The historical DLTK IDE editor guide explicitly targets Eclipse 3.5, 3.6, or 3.7 with DLTK 3.0. It is valuable for understanding the architecture and sequence, but its class names, dependencies, and XML should not be assumed to work unchanged on a current platform.
The Eclipse Foundation’s DLTK project page lists DLTK 6.4.2, dated 2025-09-10. That release listing does not establish which APIs are available in every Eclipse package or installation. Use your target platform to verify bundle dependencies, extension-point schemas, and API signatures before implementation.
How the pieces fit together
A DLTK editor is not just an editor class. It is a set of Eclipse plug-ins that connect language identity and project rules to parsing, a language model, and user-facing editing services. DLTK’s core architecture documentation describes a language toolkit contributed through org.eclipse.dltk.core.language and associated with a language-specific project nature. The toolkit identifies its nature through getNatureId(), while validation determines which resources count as source modules and packages.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Once a project has the appropriate nature, DLTK can treat it as a script project and build its model according to the language’s internal structure, validation rules, and build paths. This makes project recognition and model rules foundational: editor features that depend on knowing what a module, type, or declaration is will be more reliable when those rules are defined first.
Build the language support in stages
1. Define the language and project nature
Choose stable identifiers for the language and its project nature, and decide which files and folders belong to a language project. Implement validation so that only genuine language source resources are treated as modules or packages. The nature and validation rules tell DLTK how to recognize the project and what to include in its model.

2. Separate parsing from model reporting
Plan two responsibilities: parsing source syntax and reporting language elements to DLTK. In the historical editor tutorial, a source parser builds a source-module AST; a source element parser then uses that structure to report elements for the DLTK model. The architecture documentation describes the source element parser as reporting internal model information to an ISourceElementRequestor.
DLTK provides generic AST classes for common structures such as modules, types, methods, and fields, but using its AST hierarchy is not mandatory. An existing or custom AST can work; adopting DLTK’s hierarchy can make existing DLTK facilities, including source-element parsing and search integration, easier to use. The tutorial demonstrates parser contributions through org.eclipse.dltk.core.sourceParsers and org.eclipse.dltk.core.sourceElementParsers, associated with a language nature. Treat these names as architectural guidance and verify their current definitions in your target platform rather than copying old declarations blindly.

3. Register an editor for the language
Put UI/editor support in an Eclipse UI plug-in and contribute an editor through org.eclipse.ui.editors. Associate it with the language’s content type so Eclipse can open the right editor for matching files. The historical DLTK example implements its editor by extending ScriptEditor; whether that remains appropriate depends on the DLTK and Eclipse versions you target.
The old guide lists dependencies spanning Eclipse UI, runtime, JFace text, editor/IDE bundles, and DLTK core and UI. Do not copy that list as a current dependency recipe: bundle organization and requirements vary by platform and plug-in structure. Resolve dependencies against the target platform and keep the editor contribution separate from language parsing and project-model code where practical.

4. Configure document behavior and basic editing
Configure how the source viewer handles your language’s document, including its partitions where needed. Eclipse’s text editor and platform text documentation describes capabilities such as text presentation, annotations, line numbers, syntax highlighting, content assist, outline pages, context-sensitive behavior, hovers, key bindings, and preferences. These are framework capabilities, not automatic language features: your plug-in must provide the language-specific rules and configuration.
Start with the basics that make source files usable: a suitable document setup, recognizable tokens and comments, and a workable outline if the language has meaningful structure. Add only services your language can support accurately.

5. Add semantic IDE services as the model matures
DLTK’s Mini-HOWTO maps richer features to separate implementation hooks. An outline page and folding provider expose structure; a selection engine resolves a model element at a source offset and can support declaration navigation and documentation hovers; a completion engine and proposal-computer integration provide content assist. Preferences, search, interpreter installation, launch configurations, and launch shortcuts are further services rather than prerequisites for a basic editor.
Implement semantic features only when parsing and model information are dependable enough to support them. For example, completion based on an incomplete or inconsistent model can be less useful than a smaller set of accurate proposals. The DLTK IDE guide likewise treats search, open type, go-to-declaration, keyword completion, and templates as later stages after the editor foundation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether DLTK or Generic Editor fits
Eclipse Platform’s Generic Editor offers a simpler, faster route to textual language support, with less control and some limitations compared with defining a full editor. Consider it when the language needs a relatively lightweight text-editing experience and platform-provided mechanisms are sufficient. Consider DLTK when its language toolkit, project model, and IDE-service architecture fit the language’s needs. The cited platform documentation does not provide a current, detailed DLTK-versus-Generic-Editor comparison, so evaluate both against your target release and required features rather than assuming one universally replaces the other.
Use existing DLTK editors as feature examples
The official Tcl editor documentation describes a concrete DLTK-based result with an updating Tcl-specific Outline view, syntax highlighting, code assist, and debugging features. It illustrates the kinds of capabilities a language plug-in can provide; these do not appear automatically when a new language is connected to DLTK.
