Website hosting can cost a few dollars a month for a basic shared plan, while managed WordPress, virtual private servers (VPS), and cloud setups can cost more. The price that matters is not just the advertised starting rate: budget for the full billing term, renewal, and any domain, email, backup, or usage charges the plan does not include.
There is no supported universal market-wide average. The prices below are dated examples from individual providers, in their stated currencies and billing terms—not a single like-for-like market comparison.
What do current hosting plans cost?
These examples show how prices vary by provider, service and billing term. Promotions and plan details can change, so check the provider’s current terms before committing.
| Provider and plan | Published price | What the example includes or means |
|---|---|---|
| DreamHost Web Hosting Launch | €2.89/month for the first year; €10.99/month at renewal | DreamHost’s page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists daily automated backups, unmetered bandwidth, SSL certificates and a domain for one year. The renewal rate is the future recurring price. DreamHost plan details |
| DreamHost DreamPress 1 managed WordPress | €14.99/month for the first year; €19.99/month at renewal | DreamHost’s page, accessed October 4, 2026, describes a one-website plan with 14-day backup retention and a domain for one year. DreamHost plan details |
| DreamHost Managed VPS Business | €13.75/month for the first year; €31.99/month at renewal | The 2026 example lists 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, daily automated backups and unmetered bandwidth. DreamHost plan details |
| Namecheap Stellar shared hosting | $2.28/month, or $26.88 for the year | Namecheap’s comparison page, updated July 16, 2026, lists Stellar Plus at $2.98/month and Stellar Business at $4.98/month, with different storage and file allowances. These are Namecheap plan examples, not a neutral comparison. Namecheap shared hosting |
| Bluehost Starter shared hosting | $11.99/month on a 12-month renewal term | Bluehost’s renewal list was updated February 11, 2026. It lists different renewal rates for monthly, 12-month and 36-month terms and says prices may change. Bluehost renewal pricing |
| Amazon Lightsail entry Linux/Unix virtual server | $5/month | AWS’s pricing page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists a bundle with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer. It is a self-managed VPS, not a managed WordPress service. AWS Lightsail pricing |
These prices use different currencies, terms and service models. For instance, comparing a first-year promotion with another provider’s renewal price would be misleading. The figures are useful as concrete examples, not as evidence of an industry-wide average.

Why do hosting prices differ?
Shared hosting
Shared hosting is positioned as a low-cost choice for simpler websites. The provider’s example price still needs to be weighed against its renewal rate, resource limits and included features.
Managed WordPress
A managed WordPress plan is a service tailored to that platform. It may bundle support or operational services that a self-managed server leaves to you; compare what is actually included rather than assuming all plans provide the same level of management.

VPS and cloud hosting
A VPS allocates virtual server resources, but a self-managed VPS also puts setup, updates, security, backups, monitoring and troubleshooting on the site owner. Cloud pricing can depend on the resources selected and on separately billed components, so a headline bundle may not represent the complete bill.
Broad planning ranges are only orientation
Website Cost Estimator’s April 2026 guide gives indicative ranges of $3–$15/month for shared hosting, $25–$100/month for managed WordPress, $20–$80/month for VPS, $80–$300/month for dedicated servers and $50–$500/month for cloud. These are that publisher’s planning estimates, not an authoritative market average; use current provider quotes for a real budget. Website Cost Estimator’s hosting-cost guide

What should you include in a hosting budget?
- Introductory and renewal charges: Write down both prices and the length of each billing term. Providers may also set different rates for different renewal durations.
- Domain: Check whether registration is included, how long it is included for, and what renewal costs. A first-year domain is not necessarily free in later years.
- Email, SSL and backups: Confirm whether each is included, how long any trial lasts, backup frequency and retention, and whether restoration has a separate fee. DreamHost lists a three-month professional email trial on relevant plans; Namecheap lists SSL and backups among shared-plan features. DreamHost plan details Namecheap shared hosting
- Resources and transfer: Compare storage and bandwidth or data-transfer allowances against your needs. “Unmetered” and fixed transfer bundles are provider-specific terms, not interchangeable resource guarantees.
- Cloud add-ons and usage: AWS’s Lightsail pricing and documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, list snapshot storage at $0.05 per GB-month, block storage at $0.10 per allocated GB-month, and load balancers at $18/month. AWS also notes that snapshots and managed databases can add charges. Check current rates and account for only the resources your architecture needs. AWS Lightsail pricing AWS Lightsail documentation
- Management and time: A lower server price is not the same as a complete managed website service. Consider the operational work you can handle and the support the plan actually provides.
- One-time costs: Record any setup or migration charges separately from recurring hosting fees.
How do you calculate the real cost?
For a fair comparison, total costs over the same period rather than comparing monthly headlines:
- Write down the hosting charge for the first term and the renewal charge for the next term.
- Add domain renewal and any paid email, SSL, backup, migration or setup costs that apply.
- For cloud hosting, add expected usage charges for the resources you plan to use, such as storage, snapshots, databases or load balancers.
- Add the applicable amounts, then divide by the number of months in that period to get a comparable monthly figure.
Check each plan’s current inclusions as you do the calculation: some bundle features such as SSL, backups, bandwidth or an initial domain term, while cloud platforms may price resources separately.

Which hosting option makes sense for your site?
- Choose a basic shared plan when the site is simple and minimizing initial hosting cost matters; make sure the renewal rate fits your longer-term budget.
- Consider managed WordPress when you want a WordPress-specific service and its listed management or support is worth the additional cost to you.
- Consider a VPS when you need its server resources and are prepared either to manage the server or pay for management. A self-managed price does not include the value of your own operating time.
- Consider cloud hosting when its resource model suits your needs and you can estimate usage. Include separately billed resources rather than treating the base bundle as the entire cost.
No single listed option is automatically cheapest over time: the right comparison is between equivalent billing periods, required features and the work you are willing to manage.
