For a voice interview bot, start with an agent framework such as LiveKit Agents or Pipecat, then choose how speech will be processed: a conventional speech-to-text (STT) → language model (LLM) → text-to-speech (TTS) pipeline, or a supported speech-to-speech model. Piper and Faster Whisper are possible local components, but combining open-source tools does not automatically create a fully local, free-to-run production system.
What you need to build a voice interview bot
A voice bot is a coordinated system, not a single model. It needs a way to carry audio, recognize what the interviewee says, decide how to respond, speak the response, and manage the interview’s sequence and state.
- Audio transport: Connects the participant to the bot. A browser interview can use WebRTC; a phone interview needs a telephony path such as SIP.
- Speech and language components: An STT-LLM-TTS pipeline or a model that handles speech-to-speech.
- Conversation logic: Controls questions, clarification, pauses, skips, completion, and any handoff.
- Operations and data handling: Hosting, logging, access controls, and policies for any saved audio, transcripts, or answers.
These parts may come from different projects and providers. An open-source framework does not mean every model, media service, hosting option, or phone connection it uses is open-source or free.
Choose the audio architecture
STT → LLM → TTS
In a conventional pipeline, STT converts spoken audio to text, the LLM chooses a response or action, and TTS turns the response into audio. LiveKit’s model documentation describes this arrangement. Its stages can be selected and inspected separately, but the system must coordinate streaming, buffering, turn detection, interruptions, and delays across them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Speech-to-speech
LiveKit Agents also documents support for realtime models with direct speech-to-speech capability. This reduces the number of visible stages in the model chain, but it does not remove the need to check whether a chosen model meets your requirements. Confirm its language support, hosting and data-handling terms, and cost before building around it.
Frameworks and local components to consider
| Tool | What its project documentation describes | Useful fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| LiveKit Agents | Python and Node.js SDKs, model integrations, agent lifecycle and deployment documentation, and web, mobile, and SIP paths. | A project that needs documented agent-server deployment options or may need browser and phone channels. | The quickstart assumes LiveKit Cloud and says it can be adapted to the open-source self-hosted server. Production self-hosting requires custom deployment, with AI providers connected through plugins. |
| Pipecat | An open-source Python framework for orchestrating AI services, network transport, audio processing, and multimodal interactions. | A project that favors composable Python pipelines and a range of service integrations. | The README example uses Daily for WebRTC and Cartesia for TTS; it demonstrates the framework, not an all-local setup. The README material referenced here is from a repository path named vitco/pipecat-voice-ai, not the canonical pipecat-ai/pipecat repository. Verify the repository linked by the current project site before installing. |
| Piper | Its repository describes it as “A fast, local neural text to speech system.” | A local-oriented TTS component to evaluate for a prototype. | Check its current license, voice and language availability, and hardware requirements in the project repository. |
| Faster Whisper | A Whisper transcription implementation using CTranslate2. | A transcription component to evaluate for a local-oriented prototype. | Check its current license, model requirements, supported languages, and hardware fit in the project repository. |
LiveKit and Pipecat are framework starting points, not independently ranked winners. LiveKit’s documentation emphasizes agent lifecycle, deployment, SDK choices, and telephony; Pipecat emphasizes composable Python pipelines and service integration. The cited material does not establish a controlled head-to-head benchmark for either framework or a complete local stack.

Decide whether interviews happen in a browser or by phone
Browser or app interview
For a web interview, choose a realtime media transport and connect it to the agent. LiveKit documents web and mobile paths, while the Pipecat README example illustrates WebRTC transport. A framework’s transport integration does not by itself establish that the rest of the stack runs locally.
Telephone interview
If participants must dial a number, include a telephony layer in the design. LiveKit documents SIP integration; telephony is a separate decision from the choice of STT, LLM, or TTS. Phone-number service, media transport, hosting, and inference may introduce outside dependencies and charges. The reviewed project material does not establish current prices.

A practical implementation sequence
- Choose the channel. Decide whether participants will use a browser or app, or call a phone number. This determines whether to plan for a WebRTC path or telephony such as SIP.
- Choose the framework. Evaluate LiveKit Agents if its documented SDKs, agent-server lifecycle, deployment options, or SIP path fit your requirements. Evaluate Pipecat if its composable Python pipeline and integrations fit better. Check the current official project repository before installing.
- Choose the speech architecture. Select an STT-LLM-TTS pipeline or a supported speech-to-speech model. Write down which components run locally and which call hosted services; the distinction matters for data handling, operations, and cost.
- Define the interview state machine. Specify the introduction and any consent language, ask one question at a time, and decide how to handle silence, unclear answers, clarification, repetition, skips, stopping, handoff, and completion. Save only what the use case requires, and set an access and retention policy for stored data.
- Test realistic conversations. Use representative speakers and conditions. Check transcript errors, missed turns, interruptions, silence handling, recovery after network or model errors, and whether the bot follows the intended question sequence.
- Review deployment requirements. Before launch, verify current licenses and terms for each framework, model, transport, hosting service, and telephony provider. Check pricing, data retention, geographic processing, and recording or interview rules that apply to your deployment.
How to keep the stack genuinely local
“Local” should describe the whole path, not just one model. Piper is described by its project as local TTS, and Faster Whisper is a transcription implementation; using either does not prove that audio transport, the LLM, storage, or the deployed service is local. Map each component and mark whether it runs on infrastructure you control or sends data to an external service.
Do not assume that a framework sample represents a private, self-hosted configuration. Pipecat’s cited sample uses Daily and Cartesia, while LiveKit’s quickstart assumes Cloud and describes adapting it to its self-hosted server. The available project descriptions do not establish latency, accuracy, concurrency, or total cost for a complete local interview stack.

What a microphone is—and is not—needed for
A microphone is useful for trying a running voice agent locally: LiveKit’s quickstart has the developer speak to the agent through one. The documentation does not prescribe a particular microphone, and special microphone hardware is not a requirement established for building the bot.
