To limit who can see your Facebook posts and profile, open Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. Review post audiences, profile and contact details, friend-list visibility, how people can find you, tagging, and public-content settings. Then check older posts separately and use View As, where available, to see what people who are not your friends can see.
Facebook’s menu labels can vary by device, app version, region, and profile type. If the route differs, look for the closest matching category under Audience and visibility.
Who can see my Facebook posts?
Facebook separates the audience for future posts from the audience on content you have already shared. Choose an audience before posting, and check the selector on sensitive posts rather than assuming every past post uses the same setting. Choose a default audience for future posts
Go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > Posts, then review the available audience choice. Depending on the post and options shown, you may be able to share with Public, Friends, selected people, or Only me. A smaller audience limits who can see the post on Facebook; it does not change the audience on posts you shared earlier.

Check the audience on an individual post
Before you share, use the audience selector shown with the post composer. For a sensitive post, verify the selected audience each time. The selector applies to that content, so do not treat it as a universal setting for every item on your profile.
Review older posts separately
Open your Activity Log and use Manage Activity where available to review or manage some posts, photos, and videos you have already shared. A future-post default does not automatically change the audience of every older item. Also, content hidden from your timeline may still be visible elsewhere on Facebook to the audience it was originally shared with. Facebook: View and adjust your privacy settings
How do I hide my Facebook friends list?
Open Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you > Who can see your friends list? Facebook’s guidance says the Friends section is public by default. Choose a narrower audience if you do not want everyone to see the list on your profile. Facebook: Who can see your friends list on Facebook?

This setting controls the list on your own profile, not what your friends choose to show on theirs. You cannot override another person’s visibility settings, and mutual friends may still appear.
Which profile and contact details should I review?
There is no single profile-wide switch that hides every detail. Under Audience and visibility, review your basic information and adjust the audience selector for each field, including contact information such as email addresses and phone numbers. Check the setting on each item rather than assuming one change applies to all of them. Facebook: How do I adjust who can see my profile information on Facebook?
How can I limit who finds or contacts me?
In Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you, review the available controls for friend requests, profile suggestions based on your email address or phone number, and whether external search engines can link to your profile. Turning off Facebook’s external-search linking option does not immediately remove results already indexed or cached by a search engine. Search providers control when their own results update or disappear, so a Facebook setting cannot promise immediate removal from external search.

Under Audience and visibility > Profile and tagging, look for the setting about adding people to a post’s audience when you are tagged and they cannot already see it. Facebook lists choices such as Friends, selected friends, or not adding anyone, and says Friends is the default. Facebook: How do I control who can see posts I’m tagged in on my profile?
This setting controls whether you expand the audience by adding people; it does not replace the original poster’s audience choice. The original poster’s audience still applies.

What can people see on my public profile?
Followers and public interactions
Review Audience and visibility > Followers and public content to check who can follow you and who can like or comment on public profile information. Facebook identifies profile photos and videos, cover photos, featured photos, and basic-information change updates as public profile information. Facebook: Followers and public content
Current profile and cover photos
Facebook says: “Your current profile picture and cover photo are public, so they can be seen by anyone on or off Facebook.” Older profile and cover photos may have separate privacy controls, so inspect those items individually rather than assuming the current-photo rule applies to every past image. Use View As, where available, to inspect your profile from the perspective of someone who is not your friend. Check the information and posts visible on the profile, and remember that an item hidden from your timeline may still be available elsewhere on Facebook to its original audience. Use Privacy Checkup to review the controls
Facebook recommends Privacy Checkup as a guided way to review audiences and sharing choices. Use it alongside the individual settings above: a guided check is not a guarantee that every older item or someone else’s post becomes private. Facebook’s help guidance says privacy settings are available from Audience and visibility. Facebook: View and adjust your privacy settings
Some defaults may differ for people under 18 in certain regions, and options can vary by profile type. Follow the labels available in your current Facebook interface.
