The cheapest hosted logging for a Postgres-backed SaaS API is rarely the service with the lowest headline price. It is the one that lets you find a request, database event, or failed job quickly while controlling ingestion and retention. Start with a structured service that can combine application, gateway, authentication, and Postgres records; then compare the amount you ingest, how long you retain it, and what happens after the free allowance. A native dashboard can be sufficient when every workload runs on one platform, while an external service is more useful when logs span hosts or cloud providers. The four clues below—queryability, usage economics, integration path, and actionability—provide a practical way to choose without paying for storage you never use.

What makes hosted logging “cheap” for a Postgres API?

Cost has three separate dimensions: the bytes accepted, the bytes kept, and the work required to search or alert on them. A service with free ingestion but expensive long-term retention may cost more than a service with a small ingestion charge and short default storage. Conversely, a low monthly price is not a bargain if engineers cannot correlate an API request with its database error.

For a SaaS API, count all producing systems rather than only web-server output:

  • Application and API-framework logs
  • Gateway, load-balancer, and edge logs
  • Postgres statements, connection, and error events
  • Authentication, storage, realtime, and serverless-function events
  • Background workers, scheduled jobs, and deployment processes

Estimate a normal month and a worst-case month. A traffic spike, verbose SQL logging, or a failed retry loop can multiply ingestion, so spending limits and retention controls matter as much as the advertised free tier.

How does structured queryability determine the real value?

Choose a service that treats logs as fields you can filter and correlate, not as one undifferentiated text stream. The minimum useful fields are timestamp, environment, service, route, status code, latency, request ID, user or account ID, and error type; database events should carry the same request or trace identifier whenever possible.

Which fields should every API log contain?

  • Correlation: request ID, trace ID, job ID, and parent operation.
  • Request context: HTTP method, normalized route template, status, duration, region, and deployment version.
  • Database context: operation name, database role, transaction outcome, and a safe query fingerprint rather than raw secrets.
  • Outcome: error class, retry count, and whether the response was served from a cache.
  • Security context: tenant or user identifier in a non-sensitive form, authentication result, and authorization decision.

Do not put access tokens, passwords, session cookies, or full payment data in these fields. Redaction at the application boundary is safer than trying to remove secrets after they have been copied into multiple indexes and archives.

What can current hosted tools query?

Better Stack advertises schema-less structured logs, SQL queries, drag-and-drop exploration, live tail, and anomaly alerts. Heroku’s Logs & Telemetry documentation describes SQL-compatible structured log management with full-text search, charts, dashboards, and alerts. Those capabilities illustrate the useful baseline: a search language for exact filters, a live stream for an incident, and saved views for recurring questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, an incident view should answer “show all 5xx responses for POST /v1/invoices in the last 15 minutes, grouped by release and database error.” A separate view can match a request ID across the API and Postgres records. If the platform only supports keyword search, you can still operate it, but expect more manual parsing and weaker alert conditions.

How do ingestion and retention prices compare?

Read each price as a separate meter. “Per GB” may refer to bytes ingested, bytes stored for a month, or an included monthly allowance. The following figures are the published amounts identified for 2026; they are not interchangeable and can change by region, edition, or billing policy.

Service Included or starting allowance Ingestion or storage charge Retention and query details
Better Stack 3 GB of logs retained for 3 days (2026 pricing page) $0.10 per GB ingestion (2026 pricing page) $0.05 per GB-month retention (2026 pricing page); structured search, SQL, live tail, anomaly detection, spending limits, and archival options are advertised.
Papertrail Not stated beyond its published starting plan Hosted log management starts at $5 per GB per month (2026 pricing page) Search alerts, REST API, archives, and encrypted logging are listed; the starting figure should not be treated as a universal per-GB quote for every configuration.
Google Cloud Logging 50 GiB monthly free allotment (2026 pricing page) $0.50 per GiB storage after the free allotment $0.01 per GiB-month retention beyond 30 days; log-based metrics, alerting, exports, SQL Log Analytics, and Error Reporting are supported.
Supabase hosted logs 1 GB included on Free; 20 GB on Pro, Team, and Enterprise (2026 usage documentation) $0.50 per GB over the included quota (2026 documentation) Usage-based pricing was in a soft launch with a grace period through early 2027, according to the September 25, 2026 changelog. A 27.48 GB paid-plan month is shown as $3.74 overage.

Binary units matter: Google Cloud quotes GiB, while other services may quote decimal GB. Convert your estimate consistently before comparing. Also ask whether a “retention” line item covers the first month only, whether archives are charged separately, and whether query-heavy analytics consume an additional meter.

How should you estimate a monthly bill?

  1. Measure average daily log volume for each source, then multiply by the number of billing days.
  2. Add a peak scenario for launches, retries, or incident-level debug logging.
  3. Separate hot-search retention from cold archives; keeping everything searchable is usually the expensive choice.
  4. Apply the provider’s included allowance to ingestion and storage independently.
  5. Set a hard spending limit or alert before enabling verbose database logs in production.

The Supabase figures deserve particular caution because the provider says the soft launch includes a grace period through early 2027 and that more than 90% of projects are within the included limits. Recheck the current dashboard and documentation before making a budget commitment; a promotional or transitional policy is not a permanent price guarantee.

Can you search Postgres and API logs together?

Yes, but only when the records share a correlation key and reach the same search system. A hosted Postgres platform may already expose logs for database, API gateway, Auth, Storage, Realtime, and Edge Functions. Exporting those records to another service can create one cross-provider view, but it does not automatically remove the source platform’s ingestion charge.

What should the integration map include?

  • Application: emit JSON with the request ID and deployment version.
  • Gateway: preserve the upstream request ID instead of generating a second unrelated identifier.
  • Postgres: include a safe query fingerprint and transaction result; avoid logging complete parameter values.
  • Auth and platform services: capture sign-in failures, token refresh errors, function failures, and storage events.
  • Workers: log queue name, job ID, attempt number, and final disposition.

Supabase states that its hosted platform includes logs and auto-generated APIs, and its usage documentation says ingest covers Postgres, API gateway, Auth, Storage, Realtime, Edge Functions, and other services. Its external-drain guidance distinguishes exporting logs from ingest billing: sending records to Better Stack, Datadog, or an S3 archive does not by itself eliminate the platform’s ingest charge.

When is a native log view enough?

Stay with the native view when one platform hosts the database, API, authentication, and functions, and your team mainly needs short-lived debugging. It reduces setup and avoids another destination to secure. Add an external service when you must correlate workloads on different hosts, keep a longer archive, give operations teams independent access, or retain a common query language across providers.

What action features turn a log into an operational tool?

Search finds the incident; action features prevent the same incident from consuming another hour. Prioritize live tail, saved searches, dashboards, anomaly detection, and alerts routed to the channel where the on-call team works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which alerts are worth creating first?

  • Sudden increases in 5xx responses, separated by route and deployment.
  • Authentication failures that exceed a normal baseline without exposing credentials.
  • Postgres connection exhaustion, deadlocks, or repeated transaction rollbacks.
  • Queue jobs exceeding their retry budget or aging beyond a service-level target.
  • Unexpected increases in log volume that could create a billing event.

Better Stack lists anomaly detection, incident-management integration, SQL over an HTTP API, PII anonymization, spending limits, and archival options. Google Cloud supports log-based metrics, alerting, exports, SQL Log Analytics, and Error Reporting. Papertrail lists search alerts, a REST API, archives, and encrypted logging. Treat these as capabilities to verify in the plan you would actually purchase; a feature shown on a product page may be limited by retention tier or volume.

How should you design a useful dashboard?

Make one dashboard for reliability and another for cost and security. The reliability view should show request rate, error rate, latency percentiles, database failures, and worker backlog. The cost view should show bytes by service, environment, and log level, plus the percentage of records retained beyond the hot-search window. A saved query that identifies the noisiest logger often pays for itself faster than a small discount on storage.

How do you set up cheap hosted logging step by step?

The following sequence works whether the destination is a native platform view or an external hosted service.

  1. Define the incident questions. Write the searches an on-call engineer must answer: which route failed, for which tenant, in which release, and whether Postgres or an upstream dependency caused it.
  2. Standardize the event shape. Use consistent field names and ISO timestamps. Keep route templates stable so /users/:id does not become a separate series for every user.
  3. Generate one correlation ID. Create it at the edge, pass it through the application and database session where possible, and return it in an error response for support staff.
  4. Separate levels. Keep normal production events at information level, reserve debug logging for short windows, and make noisy health checks easy to exclude.
  5. Choose the first retention window. Keep enough hot data to cover your incident-response cycle, then archive only records needed for compliance, security investigations, or trend analysis.
  6. Connect sources in stages. Start with the API and database, validate field mapping, then add Auth, gateway, storage, realtime, and workers. This makes duplicate ingestion easier to spot.
  7. Create alerts and spending limits. Test both a real error alert and a volume alert. Confirm that a destination outage does not silently block the application.
  8. Run a deletion and access review. Verify PII masking, role-based access, archive expiration, and the process for removing a tenant’s data when required.

Which option fits common Postgres SaaS situations?

Situation Most sensible starting point Reason Watch for
Small API, one hosted platform, short debugging needs Native platform logs Fewest integrations and no separate destination to administer Short retention, limited cross-service search, and platform-specific quotas
Multiple hosts or cloud providers External structured log service One query surface and shared correlation fields Duplicate ingestion and separate source-platform charges
Very low, predictable volume A plan with a small included allowance and explicit overage Lower risk of paying for unused reserved capacity Unexpected retention or archive fees
Compliance or security investigations Hot search plus controlled archive Fast incident work without keeping every byte in an expensive index Encryption, access logs, deletion policy, and export integrity
Teams that already use SQL for operations SQL-capable log analytics Less retraining and easier saved investigations Query limits, scanned-data charges, and schema drift

What are the most common cost and reliability mistakes?

Counting only application logs

Platform services can generate more records than the API itself. Include database, gateway, authentication, storage, realtime, function, and worker events in the estimate.

Assuming an export is free

A drain changes where you search; it does not necessarily change what the source platform counts as ingested. Confirm billing treatment for every source and destination.

Keeping debug data indefinitely

Verbose SQL and request bodies are expensive and increase privacy exposure. Use time-limited debug switches, sampling, redaction, and a separate archive policy.

Breaking correlation during retries

Retries that generate new IDs make one user action look like unrelated failures. Preserve a parent ID and add an attempt number.

Alerting on raw volume without a baseline

A fixed threshold can page the team during a legitimate launch or miss a gradual leak. Combine a baseline anomaly signal with a hard spending guardrail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring units and policy dates

GB and GiB are different, and soft-launch allowances can change. Record the provider, plan, region, measurement unit, and date beside every budget assumption.

How should privacy and security affect the choice?

Hosted logs replicate operational data outside the database, often across indexes, backups, and archives. Require encryption in transit and at rest, least-privilege access, audit records for searches and exports, and a documented deletion schedule. Prefer anonymized tenant identifiers and query fingerprints over raw personal data.

Test a complete incident workflow with synthetic records before production: emit a known request ID, trigger a controlled database error, verify that the alert fires, then confirm that redaction and archive expiration work as intended. A cheap service that cannot meet your retention or privacy obligations is not economical.

What is the practical buying decision?

Use native Supabase logs first when your stack is concentrated there and a short debugging window is enough. Select an external structured service when you need one search surface across providers, SQL or equivalent field queries, longer archives, or independent operational access. In either case, calculate ingestion and retention separately, preserve a correlation ID end to end, and enforce volume limits before turning on verbose logging.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much log retention does a small SaaS API really need?

Keep enough searchable history to cover your normal support and incident-response cycle, then archive only events with compliance or security value. Measure how often investigations require data older than that window before paying for a longer hot index.

Should database query text be stored in hosted logs?

Usually store a normalized query fingerprint, operation name, and outcome instead of complete SQL with parameter values. Full text can contain customer data or secrets and is harder to remove from copies and archives.

Will sending Supabase logs to another service stop Supabase log charges?

No. Supabase documentation distinguishes external drains from ingest billing, so an export destination does not automatically waive source-platform ingestion. Check the current quota and pricing policy for your plan before assuming a drain reduces cost.

What is the safest way to test a logging pipeline?

Use synthetic tenants and a deliberately triggered, non-sensitive error. Verify correlation, redaction, alert delivery, archive expiration, and access controls before enabling the same configuration for customer traffic.
