Most discovery problems can be isolated with these reversible checks before you investigate Bluetooth hardware or try another transfer method.
First, confirm you have the right sharing app
For Android-to-Windows transfers, use Google Quick Share—not Windows Nearby sharing. Google Quick Share needs its Windows app installed and open or running in the background to receive files. Windows Nearby sharing is Microsoft’s feature for sharing between supported Windows devices; it is not the Android-to-Windows app.
- Android: Google lists Android 6.0 or later as the minimum.
- Windows: Google lists 64-bit Windows 10 or later; ARM-based PCs require Windows 11 or later. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet must be enabled.
- Samsung PC: install Samsung’s Quick Share app from Microsoft Store. Google says its own Windows app is no longer supported on Samsung PCs.
Availability is limited in some regions. Check Google’s current Quick Share requirements and availability if the app or feature is missing.
Make the receiving PC visible
- Open Quick Share on the Windows PC and check its visibility setting.
- On Android, turn on Quick Share and check the audience setting so the PC can be seen by the sender.
- For a short diagnostic test, use a broader audience setting such as Everyone if available. If discovery works, restore your preferred, more private setting. Google lists Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one; signing in and choosing Contacts or Your devices supports more private sharing.
- Try sending again while Quick Share remains open or running in the background on Windows.

Check radios, distance, and the network
- Bluetooth: Turn it on for both the Android phone and the PC.
- Wi-Fi: Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on for both devices. Google advises checking that they are on the same network.
- Distance: Put the devices within 30 centimeters for the troubleshooting test. Google’s support instructions use that close range; its product page gives a general proximity recommendation of up to 5 meters.
- Office or managed Wi-Fi: Some networks block device-to-device sharing. To test whether the network is the obstacle, turn off Wi-Fi on the phone, turn on its hotspot, and connect the PC to that hotspot. Then retry Quick Share.
Google documents these connection checks and the hotspot workaround in its Quick Share troubleshooting guide; its Windows Quick Share page describes the broader proximity recommendation.
Refresh Quick Share before changing drivers
- Close and reopen Quick Share on Windows, then retry the transfer.
- Toggle airplane mode on and then off on the Android phone, and retry.
- If discovery still fails, restart both devices and test again.
These are Google’s documented refresh steps for discovery or transfer problems. They are reversible and worth trying before changing device settings or buying hardware.

Investigate Bluetooth capability only if the basic checks fail
Google warns that a Windows PC without Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Extended Advertising may not be discoverable for Quick Share on certain networks. That is a possible cause, not proof that every missing-PC problem requires a new adapter. Check the PC’s Bluetooth adapter and driver before considering hardware.
Microsoft’s separate Nearby sharing troubleshooting guide recommends checking network profile and discovery settings, removing and re-pairing Bluetooth devices, and updating the Bluetooth driver for Windows Nearby sharing problems. Treat these as general Windows investigation steps, not guaranteed Quick Share fixes. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing Bluetooth guidance is also not a complete diagnostic for Google’s feature.

Use Phone Link as an alternative transfer route
If Quick Share remains unavailable, Microsoft’s Phone Link and Link to Windows can send files on supported configurations. For the feature described in Microsoft’s guide, the stated requirements include Windows 11, Android 10 or later, Link to Windows version 1.24032.518.0 or later, and Phone Link version 1.24032.156.0 or later. Requirements and availability may change, so confirm them in Microsoft’s current file-transfer guide.
- Connect the Android phone to the PC using Phone Link and Link to Windows.
- On Android, select the file and tap Share.
- Choose “Link to Windows – Send to PC,” then select the connected PC.
Unlike Quick Share’s nearby discovery route, this method depends on the companion apps and a supported, connected setup.

Is the problem Quick Share, Nearby sharing, or the Wi-Fi network?
