The best open-source shopping cart depends on your technology, catalog, and storefront requirements—not on a universal ranking. WooCommerce is the natural choice for an existing WordPress site; OpenCart and PrestaShop suit conventional self-hosted stores; Magento Open Source handles more demanding catalogs with the right team; and platforms such as Saleor, Medusa, Sylius, and Spree are better for custom, headless, or API-driven commerce. nopCommerce is the strongest fit for Microsoft/.NET teams, while Bagisto is the practical Laravel-oriented option.

Open source means the software’s source code is available for inspection, modification, and—depending on the project’s license—self-hosted deployment. It does not mean that running a store is free or maintenance-free. Hosting, security, backups, development, extensions, payment processing, shipping, taxes, and support can all remain your responsibility.

What to look for in an open-source shopping cart

Before comparing platforms, separate two very different kinds of ecommerce software:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Packaged store platforms provide an administrative dashboard, product and order management, a storefront, themes, and an extension marketplace. WooCommerce, PrestaShop, OpenCart, Magento Open Source, Bagisto, and nopCommerce generally fit this model, although their setup difficulty varies considerably.
  • Commerce frameworks and headless platforms provide commerce logic and APIs while expecting a developer to build or integrate the customer-facing storefront. Sylius, Saleor, Medusa, and Spree are more suitable for teams creating a custom web, mobile, B2B, marketplace, or composable commerce experience.

A platform can be open source and still have paid extensions, proprietary add-ons, commercial hosting, or enterprise support. Check the license for the exact edition and component you plan to use rather than assuming that every module has the same terms.

Quick comparison

Platform Best suited to Primary strength Main trade-off
WooCommerce WordPress users and content-led stores WordPress integration and broad extensibility WordPress, plugin, hosting, and performance maintenance remain part of the job
PrestaShop Conventional stores selling across countries Multilingual, localization, and conventional store administration Modules, hosting, and customization still require careful management
OpenCart Small businesses and straightforward catalogs Traditional PHP shopping-cart workflow and administration Extensions and server administration can add complexity
Magento Open Source Larger catalogs and multi-store projects Deep customization and sophisticated catalog capabilities Higher infrastructure and developer requirements
Sylius Symfony teams building custom B2B or B2C commerce API-driven, modular Symfony architecture It is a framework/platform, not a beginner-friendly turnkey cart
Saleor Engineering-led headless commerce projects GraphQL and composable architecture A separate custom storefront and operational engineering are usually needed
Medusa JavaScript and TypeScript teams Modular commerce services and APIs It is not primarily a ready-made storefront for nontechnical merchants
Bagisto Laravel/PHP teams Laravel-based conventional ecommerce with room to expand Independent evidence about scale and enterprise readiness is limited
Spree Commerce API-first B2B, marketplace, multi-store, and regional commerce Headless commerce and multiple business models Some advanced capabilities and licensing distinctions require close review
nopCommerce Microsoft/.NET organizations ASP.NET-oriented storefront and administration system Less suitable if your team has no .NET deployment experience

1. WooCommerce: the best fit for an existing WordPress site

WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce platform built on WordPress. It is the clearest choice when a business already uses WordPress for publishing, SEO, landing pages, or editorial content and wants to add products without introducing a separate content-management system.

The platform supports more than a basic physical-product catalog. Its developer documentation describes support for physical products, digital downloads, subscriptions, content, and appointments. That makes WooCommerce useful for stores that sell a mix of goods and services or use content as a major part of customer acquisition.

WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin, not a completely independent ecommerce operating system. You must manage—or pay someone to manage—the WordPress installation, hosting, database, themes, plugins, compatibility, security, caching, and performance. A large collection of poorly maintained extensions can become a bigger operational problem than the core platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the core is intentionally extensible, merchants can add functionality through WooCommerce extensions and themes. Choose those additions for a defined need such as payment methods, subscriptions, shipping, or SEO, and check that each extension supports your WordPress, WooCommerce, and payment setup before installing it.

Choose WooCommerce if: you already run WordPress, need a content-heavy store, or have an agency or developer comfortable maintaining the WordPress ecosystem.

Think twice if: you want a tightly integrated, standalone commerce stack or do not want responsibility for coordinating multiple WordPress plugins.

2. PrestaShop: a conventional cart with strong international-selling options

PrestaShop is a PHP-based open-source ecommerce platform for merchants who want a conventional self-hosted store rather than a commerce API alone. The project highlights multilingual and country localization, payment-service support, responsive front and back offices, GitHub availability, and the OSL 3.0 license. PrestaShop also reports more than 300,000 web stores worldwide; that figure is a statement from the project, not an independent market-share audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its internationalization emphasis makes it a sensible candidate for a business selling in multiple countries, currencies, languages, or tax environments. The practical result still depends on the modules, payment providers, tax configuration, shipping integrations, translations, and local compliance work you select.

The freely available open-source project should be distinguished from optional commercial modules, hosting, partner services, and support. A store can begin with the open-source software and later incur substantial costs for design, integrations, maintenance, and specialist assistance.

Once you have identified a specific requirement—such as localized checkout, a payment integration, or a theme change—compare compatible PrestaShop modules and themes rather than installing extensions simply because they are available. Confirm their maintenance status and compatibility with your exact PrestaShop release.

Choose PrestaShop if: you want a traditional self-hosted store and international selling is central to the business.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think twice if: your team wants a minimal-maintenance hosted service or your project needs a custom API-first architecture from the start.

3. OpenCart: a straightforward option for smaller conventional stores

OpenCart is a free, open-source ecommerce platform with the familiar building blocks of a shopping cart: product catalogs, orders, customers, layouts, reports, payment configuration, and extensions.

Its administration model is a reasonable fit for a small business or developer who wants a conventional PHP store without adopting a content platform or assembling a commerce backend from APIs. The documentation covers installation as well as the major administrative areas, which can make the platform easier to evaluate before committing.

Rank #2
Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

“Easy to use” should be understood as a relative comparison, not a guarantee. The dashboard may be approachable for a straightforward catalog, but the complete operation still includes server configuration, backups, updates, payment security, extension compatibility, and troubleshooting. A heavily customized OpenCart store can be difficult to maintain even if the original installation was simple.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Choose OpenCart if: you have a small or uncomplicated catalog, prefer a traditional PHP shopping cart, and have access to someone who can administer the server and extensions.

Think twice if: you need advanced custom workflows, a deeply integrated content operation, or a large engineering-led composable system.

4. Magento Open Source: for complex catalogs and experienced teams

Magento Open Source is Adobe’s free open-source ecommerce edition. Adobe also offers the separate commercial Adobe Commerce product, so Magento Open Source should not be described as equivalent to Adobe Commerce: the commercial offering adds cloud, support, and enterprise capabilities.

Magento Open Source is the most demanding conventional platform in this list, but its depth can be valuable for larger catalogs, multiple storefronts, complex product relationships, and substantial customization. It is a better match for an organization with experienced Magento developers, disciplined deployment practices, and infrastructure that can support the application than for a first-time merchant looking for the quickest launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The self-hosted edition places more responsibility on your team. Before choosing it, budget for development, staging environments, monitoring, security patching, database and search administration, backups, performance work, and release testing. The software being free does not make those activities free.

Adobe provides an extension ecosystem containing third-party Magento Marketplace extensions and templates. Check an extension against the exact Magento release, PHP and infrastructure requirements, security history, and compatibility with the rest of your stack. Avoid selecting extensions solely by feature count.

Choose Magento Open Source if: catalog complexity, multiple stores, or deep custom business logic justify a capable development and operations team.

Think twice if: your store is small, your team is inexperienced with Magento, or your priority is a low-maintenance launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Sylius: a Symfony framework for custom commerce

Sylius presents itself as an open-source, headless ecommerce platform built around Symfony. It uses an API-driven architecture and emphasizes REST APIs, progressive web applications, native-app compatibility, scalability, and B2C and B2B experiences.

Sylius is not simply another downloadable cart with a theme and a ready-made workflow. It is a strong option when a Symfony/PHP team wants to model unusual products, pricing, checkout, customer accounts, channels, or business processes in a maintainable application. The same flexibility means more design and development work before customers can place an order.

Projects involving custom B2B, marketplace, or composable commerce should plan for architecture, integrations, testing, frontend development, deployment, and long-term ownership. If the organization does not already have Symfony expertise, a Sylius development partner may be more realistic than treating the platform as a do-it-yourself cart; verify current partner availability and capabilities before selecting one.

Also review the license of every add-on. Sylius identifies its Marketplace Suite as a proprietary module, so the open-source status of the core does not automatically extend to every advanced feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Sylius if: your team is experienced with Symfony and needs custom B2B, B2C, marketplace, or API-driven commerce.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Think twice if: you need a fast, theme-first store that a nontechnical operator can install and configure alone.

6. Saleor: a GraphQL-first headless commerce platform

Saleor Core is described by its project repository as a high-performance, composable, headless commerce API. It is open source and is designed for teams that want to build the customer experience separately from the commerce backend.

The repository points to a storefront example using Next.js, React, TypeScript, GraphQL, and Tailwind CSS. That combination illustrates Saleor’s intended audience: an engineering team that wants control over the web or mobile experience, frontend technology, and integration architecture rather than a preselected theme system.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Headless flexibility comes with a different implementation burden. You may need to build or operate the storefront, connect search and content systems, handle preview and deployment workflows, integrate payments and fulfillment, and establish monitoring for both the API and frontend. A merchant without frontend and backend engineering resources should not choose Saleor merely because the core is open source.

Choose Saleor if: GraphQL, custom web or mobile storefronts, composable architecture, and engineering control are important requirements.

Think twice if: you want an all-in-one administrative and storefront experience with minimal custom development.

7. Medusa: modular commerce building blocks for JavaScript teams

Medusa describes itself as an open-source commerce platform for customized B2C experiences. Its repository describes modular commerce logic that can also support B2B, direct-to-consumer, marketplaces, distributor platforms, point-of-sale systems, and service businesses. The repository states that its commerce modules are open source and distributed through npm under the MIT license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Medusa is best understood as a toolkit for a JavaScript or TypeScript engineering team, not as a ready-made storefront for a nontechnical merchant. The team chooses and builds the frontend, integrates services, models the business, and operates the resulting application. That is attractive when the business needs a custom workflow or wants commerce services to fit into a broader product architecture.

Managed cloud hosting is available as a separate operational choice, but it does not eliminate the need to evaluate application code, integrations, data protection, observability, and release processes. Medusa’s releases and documentation change over time, so check the repository and official documentation for the current release, supported runtime, migration guidance, and module compatibility before starting a project.

Choose Medusa if: your team works primarily in JavaScript or TypeScript and wants modular commerce services for a custom application.

Think twice if: you need a complete out-of-the-box store and do not have developers to build and maintain the experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Bagisto: the Laravel-oriented choice

Bagisto is a free and open-source Laravel ecommerce platform. Its repository highlights conventional ecommerce capabilities as well as multi-tenant ecommerce for marketplace-style software-as-a-service deployments and a point-of-sale system for retail checkout.

That makes Bagisto worth considering when a Laravel/PHP team wants a recognizable store foundation but may eventually need more than a single online catalog. Laravel familiarity can reduce the learning curve for developers who already understand the framework’s conventions, deployment model, and ecosystem.

Do not select Bagisto based on unsupported assumptions about market share, performance, or enterprise readiness. Evaluate the current repository, documentation, release activity, extension quality, deployment requirements, and the specific workload you expect. Test catalog imports, checkout, search, promotions, inventory, and integrations with representative data before promising a launch date.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Choose Bagisto if: your developers are comfortable with Laravel and you want a conventional PHP store with possible multi-tenant or retail extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think twice if: your team uses a different backend ecosystem or you need independently verified evidence for a large-scale deployment.

9. Spree Commerce: API-first commerce for multi-channel models

Spree Commerce describes itself as free and open-source, headless, API-first commerce. Its official site highlights REST APIs, a TypeScript SDK, a production-ready Next.js storefront, and support for B2B, multi-vendor marketplaces, multi-tenant and multi-store setups, multi-region selling, omnichannel operations, digital products, and subscriptions.

Those capabilities make Spree a candidate for businesses that need multiple storefronts, regional operations, marketplace workflows, or an API layer shared by web, mobile, and other channels. The right question is not whether every listed capability is enabled automatically, but how much configuration, integration, custom development, and paid functionality your specific model needs.

Spree’s marketplace information says that the open-source release includes a marketplace starter and basic capabilities, while certain automations are associated with a paid license. Treat advanced feature and performance statements as vendor claims until you validate them in a proof of concept, and distinguish the free release from paid enterprise or marketplace licensing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Spree if: you need headless commerce with B2B, marketplace, multi-store, multi-tenant, or multi-region requirements and have development resources.

Think twice if: your priority is a simple store that can be operated without API and frontend development.

10. nopCommerce: the strongest fit for Microsoft and .NET teams

nopCommerce is open-source ecommerce software with both a catalog frontend and an administration backend. Its documentation describes it as a customizable shopping cart and covers deployment on Windows, Linux, Microsoft Azure, and private-cloud environments.

Its main strategic advantage is ecosystem fit. A business or agency already invested in Microsoft tooling and ASP.NET-oriented development may find nopCommerce a more natural operational choice than a PHP or JavaScript platform. The frontend and backend arrangement also suits merchants looking for a conventional store rather than a commerce API that requires a separately built storefront.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As with every self-hosted system, confirm the current operating-system, runtime, database, hosting, payment, and extension requirements before deployment. A .NET preference is useful only if the organization can also maintain updates, backups, security, integrations, and production infrastructure.

Choose nopCommerce if: your developers work in the Microsoft/.NET ecosystem or your organization prefers deployment options such as Windows, Linux, Azure, or private cloud.

Think twice if: your team has no .NET experience or you need a JavaScript-first, GraphQL-first, or Symfony-based commerce architecture.

Which open-source shopping cart should you choose?

Use the following decision guide instead of treating the ten platforms as interchangeable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. You already have WordPress: start with WooCommerce unless there is a specific reason to separate content and commerce.
  2. You need a small, conventional catalog: compare OpenCart and PrestaShop. OpenCart is a straightforward PHP cart; PrestaShop deserves more attention when multilingual or international selling is important.
  3. You have a large catalog or multiple stores: investigate Magento Open Source, but budget for experienced development and operations from the beginning.
  4. Your team uses Symfony: consider Sylius for a custom application rather than forcing a packaged cart to support unusual workflows.
  5. You want GraphQL and a custom frontend: evaluate Saleor.
  6. Your team is JavaScript/TypeScript-led: evaluate Medusa for modular commerce services and Spree for a broader API-first, multi-channel model.
  7. Your team uses Laravel: Bagisto is the natural platform to prototype and assess.
  8. Your organization is Microsoft/.NET-oriented: nopCommerce is the most aligned option in this list.

These recommendations are fits, not universal quality rankings. A technically excellent platform can still be the wrong choice if your developers do not know its ecosystem, your required integrations are unavailable, or your team cannot maintain the deployment.

Open source does not mean zero-cost ecommerce

The software license is only one part of the total cost of ownership. A self-hosted store may require:

  • Hosting and infrastructure: compute, database, object storage, email delivery, search, CDN, staging, and production environments.
  • Operations: backups, restore tests, monitoring, logging, uptime response, deployment automation, and disaster recovery.
  • Security: operating-system and application updates, vulnerability response, access control, secrets management, malware monitoring, and payment-security practices.
  • Development: theme or frontend work, product imports, custom checkout rules, ERP or CRM integrations, and maintenance after launch.
  • Extensions and services: themes, payment gateways, shipping, taxes, subscriptions, search, reviews, analytics, translations, and marketplace features.
  • Commercial support: agencies, development partners, platform support, consulting, or managed operations.
  • Transaction costs: payment processing, fraud tools, shipping, tax services, and potentially marketplace or third-party service fees.

If you want to reduce server administration, compare a provider offering managed hosting for OpenCart or the platform you select. Verify supported versions, backup retention, restore procedures, security responsibilities, geographic availability, deployment access, performance limits, and support response before treating managed hosting as a solution.

Also distinguish hosted offerings from self-hosted software. A commercial cloud plan may simplify operations but can introduce recurring fees, service limits, migration considerations, or features that are not included in the open-source release.

Practical checks before committing

1. Map the real requirements

Write down the catalog type, variants, bundles, subscriptions, digital goods, customer groups, currencies, languages, tax jurisdictions, shipping rules, inventory sources, returns, promotions, marketplaces, retail locations, and required integrations. A simple product catalog and a multi-warehouse B2B operation should not use the same selection criteria.

2. Decide who owns the frontend

If a merchant needs to install a theme and manage a conventional storefront, begin with a packaged platform. If the business needs a custom React, Next.js, mobile, or multi-channel experience, include frontend development and API operations in the budget before choosing a headless platform.

3. Verify the exact license

Read the license for the core, official modules, marketplace extensions, themes, and any enterprise package. For example, an open-source core can coexist with proprietary add-ons, as the Sylius Marketplace Suite example demonstrates. Do not infer that a platform’s entire ecosystem has one license.

4. Check release and compatibility status

Version numbers, supported runtimes, security policies, extension compatibility, cloud offerings, and installation requirements change. Recheck the official release information immediately before publication or implementation. Avoid building a comparison around a single “latest version” table unless all ten platforms have been checked at the same time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Build a small proof of concept

Use representative products and test the complete purchase path: catalog import, search, variant selection, taxes, shipping, payment authorization, refunds, customer emails, inventory changes, fulfillment, and reporting. For headless systems, test both the API and the storefront under realistic failure conditions.

6. Plan upgrades before launch

Document how core updates, extensions, custom code, database changes, and payment integrations will be tested. Maintain a staging environment, automated backups, a rollback plan, and a list of people responsible for security and incident response.

Security and maintenance checklist

  • Use supported releases and monitor security advisories for the core and installed extensions.
  • Remove unused plugins, modules, themes, packages, API keys, and administrator accounts.
  • Require strong authentication and least-privilege access for administrators and developers.
  • Keep production credentials and payment secrets outside source control.
  • Use HTTPS and a payment integration that minimizes the sensitive card data your store handles directly.
  • Back up application data and test restoring it; a backup that has never been restored is not a recovery plan.
  • Patch in staging first and test checkout, taxes, shipping, promotions, email, and integrations after every significant update.
  • Monitor failed payments, unusual administrator activity, error rates, queue failures, inventory mismatches, and slow checkout requests.

Final recommendation

For most small businesses, the decision becomes manageable once the technology context is clear. Choose WooCommerce for WordPress, OpenCart or PrestaShop for a conventional self-hosted store, Magento Open Source for a complex catalog with a capable team, and nopCommerce for a .NET organization. Choose Sylius, Saleor, Medusa, Bagisto, or Spree when your development team’s framework and the required commerce architecture matter more than a ready-made theme.

The strongest platform is the one your team can securely deploy, extend, update, troubleshoot, and migrate. Treat the open-source license as an opportunity for control and customization—not as a promise that ecommerce operations have no cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are open-source shopping carts free?

The core software may be available without a license fee, but running a store still costs money. Hosting, development, security, backups, extensions, payment processing, shipping, taxes, support, and maintenance can all contribute to the total cost.

Which open-source shopping cart is easiest for beginners?

WooCommerce is usually the most approachable choice for someone already familiar with WordPress. OpenCart can also suit a straightforward catalog, but neither removes the need for hosting, updates, security, backups, and extension management.

What is the difference between a headless commerce platform and a traditional shopping cart?

A traditional cart commonly includes both a customer-facing storefront and an administration dashboard. A headless platform exposes commerce functions through APIs and expects developers to build or connect the storefront separately, providing more frontend flexibility but requiring more engineering work.

Is Magento Open Source the same as Adobe Commerce?

No. Adobe distinguishes Magento Open Source from its commercial Adobe Commerce offering. Adobe Commerce adds commercial cloud, support, and enterprise capabilities, so features, services, and costs should be checked for the exact edition under consideration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: select the open-source cart that matches your existing technology and operational capacity. WooCommerce is the practical WordPress choice; PrestaShop and OpenCart fit conventional stores; Magento Open Source suits complex catalogs with expert support; and Sylius, Saleor, Medusa, Spree, Bagisto, and nopCommerce serve more specialized framework, headless, Laravel, or .NET requirements.
