Do you need to play the older Sakura Wars games first?
No. The series has a long history, with numbered entries spanning from the 1990s through Sakura Wars V in 2005, but the 2019 game was designed as an entry point. SEGA of America described it as an all-new narrative for new and longtime fans, and later called it a soft reboot. That makes it a practical place to begin—not a promise that the new game has no connection to what came before.
For a newcomer, the useful distinction is not “which games are required homework?” but “which era and style do I want?” The 2019 game moves the series into a new story and a different kind of battle system; the older English-language release offers a strategy-RPG alternative.
What is Sakura Wars (2019) like to play?
The game alternates story-focused adventure sections with battles. In the adventure portions, you spend time with characters and use the LIPS interaction system to shape conversations and relationships. Those bonds feed into the action combat, where characters pilot steam-powered mecha in 3D battles.

This is a significant change from earlier entries. Producer Tetsu Katano explained that previous games used tactical combat, while the 2019 title changed battles to action and adopted 3D presentation. Pick this version if you are comfortable with action combat and want the newer presentation; do not expect the older turn-based tactical approach.
When should you choose So Long, My Love?
Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love is the alternative to consider if the strategy-RPG format is the main draw. NIS America announced its English-language release for PS2 and Wii in 2010, describing it as a strategy RPG with a character-driven story and choices.

That release is now on older hardware. The original announcement confirms the platforms and English-language release, but it does not establish current stock, regional availability, or how easy it is to obtain and play today. Check the condition and region compatibility of any copy and console before buying; do not assume a current digital release.

Neither fact guarantees that a physical copy is currently in stock or that the US store listing applies in your region. Check your local PlayStation Store and retailers for current availability and pricing.
