What is the GOG Preservation Program?
GOG introduced the program in November 2024 as an official mark for selected classic games it actively improves. The company said it would commit its own resources to keeping these titles playable on modern and future systems, using extensive quality testing and, often, custom improvements. In GOG’s words, “GOG commits its own resources to maintain classic titles playable, now and in the future.”
At launch, GOG said the program covered 100 games, which it described as 20% of its classic-game catalog at that time. Those are company-reported, November 2024 figures—not the current program count or a measure of the wider market. GOG said it planned to add more titles in the following months.
What does GOG’s commitment include?
GOG’s launch announcement describes several buyer-facing benefits: expected operation on popular PC configurations, access to GOG technical support for problems running a game, and offline installers. Program editions may also include manuals, bonus content, DLC, or features missing from other editions. These are program-level descriptions, not a promise that every item applies to every game; check the individual store listing for what is included.

There is also evidence of work beyond republishing old files. CD PROJEKT’s 2024 management report says GOG was developing internal tools to address compatibility with modern operating systems, display resolutions, controllers, and features such as cloud saves. It also names Alpha Protocol and Resident Evil among cult releases restored in 2024 after years unavailable.
Does GOG make old PC games work on Windows 11?
The program is intended to improve compatibility with modern systems, but its public description refers to popular PC configurations rather than certifying every game for a specific Windows version. Do not assume that a program badge guarantees a particular operating system, resolution, controller, or cloud-save feature. Check the game’s current system requirements and product details before buying, especially if you need a specific setup or feature.

Which games are in the Preservation Program?
Membership and sale availability can change. Use the live Preservation Program catalog to see what is listed now, then open a game’s store page to verify its requirements, edition contents, compatibility improvements, and features. GOG’s launch count of 100 is historical and should not be used as a present-day total.

- Whether the title is currently in the program and available for sale.
- Supported operating systems and system requirements.
- Documented compatibility changes or quality-of-life improvements.
- Controller support, display options, cloud saves, and other features explicitly listed for that game.
- Whether manuals, bonus content, or DLC are included, and how the edition differs from others.
- Offline installer availability and any relevant support information.
Can you keep GOG games offline?
GOG lists offline installers as a benefit for Preservation Program buyers. That gives customers a way to keep installer files rather than relying only on an online installation process. It does not make the game’s sale availability permanent: if keeping a copy matters to you, check the title’s store page and GOG’s current support information for the applicable download details.
Does program membership mean a game can never disappear?
No. The program is a compatibility and quality effort for selected editions, not a guarantee that every old game is sold by GOG or that a listed title will remain available indefinitely. Game rights and publisher decisions can affect whether a title stays on sale. In a September 2025 interview with PC Gamer, GOG senior PR representative Piotr Gnyp described the team’s process: “Our internal tech team analyzes each game,” he said, “builds custom wrappers or tools when needed, and thoroughly tests the result.” The interview also discusses how rights and publisher relationships shape which games can be brought back or remain available.

How does GOG preserve classic PC games?
The available descriptions point to a combination of compatibility work, testing, support, and edition-specific additions. GOG says it develops tools for modern systems and may create custom improvements; Gnyp’s account emphasizes analysis and testing for each game. The exact work is title-dependent, so a general program description cannot establish that a particular game received a specific fix or feature.
