There is no evidence-based universal winner among distributed relational databases. CockroachDB, YugabyteDB, Google Cloud Spanner, and TiDB are candidates to evaluate against your transaction and consistency needs, SQL compatibility, deployment constraints, geographic requirements, and measured cost and performance. The available vendor materials describe overlapping capabilities but do not provide a neutral head-to-head benchmark. Treat this as a shortlist and decision guide—not a ranked performance test.

What a distributed relational database is—and when you need one

Distributed SQL databases spread data across multiple nodes while aiming to retain relational structure, SQL access, and transactional behavior. The category is intended to combine those features with scale, resilience, and geographic distribution; none of those goals guarantees a particular performance or availability outcome for every application. Cockroach Labs’ overview of distributed SQL describes the category and example use cases.

Consider one when your application has a real need to distribute writes, data, or transaction-serving capacity across nodes or regions while keeping relational transactions. Before taking on that complexity, check whether a conventional managed relational database already meets the workload’s capacity, availability, and geographic needs. Distributed placement and replication can introduce latency and operational trade-offs; the right choice depends on how the application behaves under its actual topology.

How the leading options differ

The table summarizes vendor-described positioning in materials reviewed on October 4, 2026. It is not a feature-equivalence matrix: product details, compatibility, service terms, and commercial tiers require verification for your intended deployment.

Database What the vendor materials emphasize Questions to settle in a proof of concept
CockroachDB Cockroach Labs emphasizes serializable isolation by default, distributed transactions, zone-based geo-partitioning, and synchronous replication across regions and deployment environments. Cockroach Labs comparison page What cross-region write latency does the application tolerate? Do locality controls, transaction retries, schema and query compatibility, and the required operational or commercial tier fit?
YugabyteDB YugabyteDB documents PostgreSQL compatibility, public- and private-cloud and Kubernetes deployment, geo-distribution, distributed OLTP, and HTAP use cases. These are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular PostgreSQL application or extension will work unchanged. YugabyteDB features Which PostgreSQL features and extensions does the application use? How do placement and replication choices affect latency, failure behavior, and the work required to operate the system?
Google Cloud Spanner Google describes Spanner as a managed multi-model database with GoogleSQL and PostgreSQL interfaces, single-, dual-, and multi-region configurations, and Spanner Omni for deployment outside Google Cloud. Google advertises availability of up to 99.999%; this is a vendor claim, not a universal guarantee. Google Cloud Spanner Does the service model and deployment scope satisfy cloud, regulatory, and portability requirements? Which SQL interface, region configuration, pricing model, and applicable service terms fit the workload?
TiDB The available comparison references identify TiDB as a candidate and label its compatibility as MySQL and project licensing as Apache 2.0. The materials reviewed do not establish enough current, first-party product detail for an even comparison with the other options. Cockroach Labs comparison page Check PingCAP’s current official documentation for architecture, transaction semantics, deployment and managed-service choices, limitations, and commercial terms before making a recommendation.

These descriptions indicate where to investigate, not which database will be fastest or cheapest. Vendor feature comparisons are useful leads, but they are not independent validation; YugabyteDB characterizes its third-party assessments as best-effort. Confirm implementation details in current product documentation and test the features your application depends on.

Choose by workload and constraints, not by label

Build the shortlist around the application’s real transaction and operating requirements. The following checks help turn a broad product comparison into a testable decision.

  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Transaction behavior: Map isolation requirements, transaction size and duration, distributed transaction patterns, retry handling, and contention on hot keys. Verify that application code handles conflicts and retries correctly.
  • SQL compatibility: Inventory dialect-specific queries, data types, constraints, stored procedures, drivers, and extensions. “PostgreSQL-compatible” or “PostgreSQL interface” is not proof that every feature or migration will work unchanged.
  • Scale and data placement: Establish the read/write mix, dataset and index sizes, write growth, regional topology, and whether the goal is horizontal write scaling, geographic locality, or both. Test the placement and replication behavior you intend to use.
  • Latency and failure objectives: Set acceptable read and write latency by region, recovery objectives, and the failures the system must survive. Measure normal operation and failure scenarios rather than inferring application behavior from a product’s architecture description.
  • Deployment and control: Decide whether you need a managed service, public- or private-cloud deployment, Kubernetes, or deployment outside a specific cloud. Include regulatory boundaries, portability, and the team’s ability to run and troubleshoot the chosen setup.
  • Migration and operations: Estimate schema and data migration work, application changes, observability needs, backup and recovery procedures, upgrade practices, and the operator skills required.
  • Total cost and performance: Compare candidates under the same workload and topology, including the deployment and service configuration you would actually operate. The reviewed sources establish no comparable independent test results or pricing figures, so they cannot support a numerical performance or cost winner.

Run a proof of concept that can change your decision

A useful proof of concept tests whether the candidate meets your requirements, not whether it can complete a generic benchmark. Use the same workload, data, and failure scenarios for each contender.

  1. Define pass/fail criteria. Specify required SQL behavior, transaction correctness, regional latency targets, throughput, recovery objectives, and operating constraints before testing.
  2. Bring representative data and queries. Use realistic dataset and index sizes, transaction boundaries, read/write ratios, contention patterns, and burst behavior. Include the application’s important schema features, drivers, and extensions.
  3. Exercise geographic placement. Run clients from the regions that matter and test the placement and replication configuration you plan to deploy. Record the latency of both local and cross-region operations.
  4. Test failures and recovery. Simulate the failures relevant to your design and observe transaction outcomes, application retries, recovery behavior, and any impact on the regions that remain available.
  5. Validate operations and cost. Have the team perform routine monitoring, backup and restore, scaling, and upgrade tasks. Measure resource use and evaluate the actual service or deployment configuration; do not substitute an advertised capability for an operational test.
  6. Record compatibility gaps. Document unsupported or changed SQL behavior, required application changes, and workarounds. Recheck these against current product documentation and service terms before making a production commitment.

Where these databases may fit

Vendor materials describe distributed SQL in areas including payments and financial services, identity, retail orders and inventory, gaming accounts and transactions, logistics and supply chains, and systems with distributed customers or spiky workloads. YugabyteDB also describes distributed OLTP and HTAP examples such as personalization and fraud detection. These examples show intended use cases; they are not independent proof that any one product suits a specific application. Cockroach Labs’ distributed SQL overview and YugabyteDB’s features documentation provide the vendor descriptions.
