64GB of RAM is not automatically overkill for video editing. It is a sensible capacity for editors working with 4K or higher footage, long or layered timelines, heavy effects, compositing, and several applications at once. For straightforward 1080p projects, 32GB may be enough. Adobe recommends 32GB or more for 4K-and-higher Premiere Pro work, while Puget Systems recommends at least 64GB for Premiere Pro and scales its workstation guidance higher as resolution and complexity rise. Those figures serve different purposes: Adobe lists software requirements, and Puget describes workstation configurations. Your footage, timeline, effects, other applications, and upgradeable hardware determine whether 64GB is useful or unnecessary.

When is 64GB RAM overkill for video editing?

It is usually more capacity than needed for simple 1080p editing, but it is often a practical middle ground for demanding 4K work. Resolution is only one variable: a short, lightly edited 4K clip can use less memory than a long 1080p documentary with many layers, noise reduction, graphics, and background applications.

Typical workload How 64GB fits Reasoning
1080p cuts, basic transitions, one application Often more than necessary 32GB can provide comfortable headroom when timelines and effects are modest.
4K editing with color correction, titles, and occasional effects Generally reasonable Extra capacity helps with longer timelines, previews, and multitasking.
6K or 8K, RAW media, multicam, heavy effects, or compositing Often a sensible baseline Large frames, caches, and multiple layers can consume memory quickly.
12K, very large projects, or several creative applications together May still be insufficient 96GB, 128GB, 192GB, or 256GB can be justified by the workflow.

Think of RAM as working room, not a direct speed dial. When a project fits comfortably in memory, adding capacity may have little visible effect. When the system runs short, the editor may rely more heavily on storage, causing pauses, slower switching, or failed previews.

What do Adobe and Puget Systems recommend?

Adobe and Puget Systems are answering different questions, so their numbers should not be treated as a contradiction. Adobe’s current Premiere Pro technical requirements, updated September 9, 2026 for listed 26.x releases, recommend 32GB or more for 4K and higher resolution. Adobe also states that its minimum specifications are for editing HD video; read the complete requirements at Adobe’s Premiere technical requirements.

Puget Systems publishes workstation-building guidance rather than a software minimum. Its suggested capacities increase with resolution for both Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve:

Workflow resolution Puget Premiere Pro guidance Puget DaVinci Resolve guidance
1080p 64GB 64GB
4K 96GB 96GB
6K 128GB 128GB
8K 192GB 192GB
12K 256GB 256GB

See the full Premiere Pro hardware recommendations and DaVinci Resolve hardware recommendations for the context behind those workstation capacities. Puget’s 64GB suggestion for 1080p is not a universal requirement, and its 96GB 4K figure is not a rule that every 4K editor must follow. It is planning guidance for systems intended to remain comfortable under demanding workloads.

How much performance difference does 64GB make compared with 32GB?

Doubling memory does not automatically double editing performance. In Puget Systems’ benchmark comparison, a 32GB configuration scored 2.5% lower overall than a 64GB configuration, while a 16GB configuration scored 9% lower overall. Puget reported that the 32GB differences in overall, RAW, and Fusion results fell within its stated normal variation. These are results from that benchmark suite, not a guaranteed gain for every computer or project. Read the methodology at Puget’s RAM-capacity performance analysis.

The practical lesson is that 32GB can be adequate when the application and timeline fit within it, whereas 16GB is more likely to become a constraint. A 64GB machine can feel more consistent during large previews, multicam work, compositing, or multitasking even when an average benchmark score changes only slightly.

Which editing tasks benefit most from 64GB?

Capacity matters most when several memory-hungry conditions overlap. Consider 64GB a capacity purchase when your work regularly includes the following.

4K, 6K, 8K, or RAW footage

Higher-resolution frames contain more data, and RAW workflows add processing and caching demands. Adobe’s 32GB-or-more recommendation covers 4K and above, while Puget’s workstation guidance rises to 96GB for 4K and 128GB for 6K. If you routinely edit 6K or 8K rather than occasionally importing a single clip, 64GB may be a starting point rather than an endpoint.

Long timelines and many tracks

Feature-length edits, multicam sequences, nested sequences, adjustment layers, subtitles, and graphics increase the amount of project state the application must manage. A short social clip may not reveal a difference between 32GB and 64GB; a long timeline with dozens of active layers can.

Effects, noise reduction, and compositing

Color grading, temporal effects, motion graphics, and compositing can create large caches and intermediate frames. DaVinci Resolve’s Fusion work, in particular, can be memory-intensive when compositions become complex. RAM does not replace a capable GPU, but insufficient RAM can still limit how much of the project remains readily available.

Multitasking while the editor is open

Editors often keep a browser with reference tabs, audio software, image tools, collaboration apps, and file transfers running alongside Premiere Pro or Resolve. Those programs compete for the same system memory. Sixty-four gigabytes gives the editor more room before the operating system begins moving data to slower storage.

When is 32GB the better choice?

Choose 32GB when your projects are mainly 1080p or modest 4K, timelines are short or moderately layered, effects are light, and you normally run one creative application at a time. It can also be the sensible choice when your computer has limited upgrade paths and the money would address a more immediate bottleneck such as a weak GPU, an older processor, or slow media storage.

Adobe’s professional video hardware guide describes a good editing workstation as having at least 32GB and says systems may use as much as 128GB. That range reinforces that “enough” depends on the complete workstation and workload; read the guide at Adobe’s professional video and audio hardware guide.

When should you consider more than 64GB?

Move beyond 64GB when your projects repeatedly approach the limit or when the workflow matches the upper end of the resolution and complexity ranges. Puget’s guidance lists 96GB for 4K, 128GB for 6K, 192GB for 8K, and 256GB for 12K in both Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. Those capacities are planning targets, not promises of a particular render time.

  • 96GB: useful headroom for sustained 4K multicam, long-form work, or heavy effects.
  • 128GB: a stronger fit for regular 6K projects and demanding compositing.
  • 192GB or 256GB: appropriate to evaluate for 8K or 12K pipelines, very large compositions, or several memory-intensive applications.

Check whether the motherboard supports these capacities and whether it requires specific module sizes or slot populations. A capacity that cannot be installed or that forces an incompatible mixed configuration is not a practical recommendation.

What other hardware can bottleneck video editing?

RAM is one part of the system. Adobe identifies memory, GPU, storage, and processor as important variables, and its current Premiere requirements call for a fast internal SSD for the application and cache plus additional high-speed storage for media. A RAM upgrade cannot compensate for a GPU that cannot process your effects, a processor that struggles with decoding, or a drive that cannot sustain your media workload.

  • GPU: affects hardware-accelerated playback, effects, color work, and export features supported by the application.
  • CPU: influences decoding, timeline operations, and tasks that are not GPU-accelerated.
  • Storage: separate the system and cache workload from media when possible, and use fast, reliable storage suited to the footage data rate.
  • Codecs and proxies: highly compressed or difficult-to-decode media can remain challenging even with abundant RAM; proxies may provide a better fix.

Use the software’s performance indicators and your operating system’s memory monitor while reproducing the problem. If memory use is not near the limit but playback is still poor, investigate the GPU, CPU, codec, storage throughput, or effect causing the slowdown before buying RAM.

How do you verify that a 64GB upgrade will work?

Compatibility comes before capacity. Do not order a kit solely because it is labeled “64GB.” Confirm the computer’s supported memory type, maximum capacity, slot count, current module layout, and whether memory is soldered.

  1. Identify the exact computer model and configuration. Record the model number, processor platform, installed RAM, and number of occupied and free slots. On Windows, Task Manager’s Performance > Memory page shows installed capacity, speed, and slot usage; the manufacturer’s service manual remains the authority for supported limits.
  2. Check the memory generation and form factor. Desktop and laptop modules are different, and DDR generations are not interchangeable. Match the type specified by the system rather than assuming newer memory will work.
  3. Verify the maximum supported capacity. Check the motherboard or system documentation for total capacity and per-slot limits. Some compact systems have soldered memory and no upgrade path.
  4. Plan the module arrangement. Use a matched kit or modules approved for the platform. Mixing capacities, speeds, or timings can cause the system to run at a lower speed or become unstable.
  5. Install and test before opening a project. Shut down, disconnect power, follow the manufacturer’s handling instructions, then confirm the new total in firmware and the operating system. Run a memory diagnostic and open a representative project before relying on the upgrade.

A specific compatible 64GB kit cannot be named responsibly without the computer model and its existing configuration. If the system is not upgradeable, put the budget toward a platform with the required capacity instead of attempting an unsupported modification.

What problems indicate that you need more RAM?

Memory pressure has recognizable patterns, but none proves RAM is the only cause. Look for several symptoms occurring together during the same workload.

  • The editor and operating system become sluggish when a large project, browser, and other creative tools are open.
  • Playback or scrubbing worsens as more layers, multicam angles, or effects are enabled, while memory usage approaches the installed limit.
  • Applications report out-of-memory conditions, fail to render previews, or close unexpectedly on complex sequences.
  • Storage activity spikes because the system is paging while the timeline is open.

First close other applications and test the same sequence. Then reduce preview resolution, disable heavy effects temporarily, or generate proxies. If those changes solve the issue without high memory use, the cause may be decoding, effects, GPU load, or storage rather than capacity. If memory remains saturated, moving from 32GB to 64GB is more likely to help than changing memory speed alone.

Should you prioritize RAM capacity or RAM speed?

For editing, having enough capacity generally matters before pursuing a higher-rated speed. A fast 32GB configuration that constantly runs out of room can perform worse in practice than a supported 64GB configuration at a modestly lower speed. Once capacity is sufficient and the platform supports the advertised settings, speed and latency can be secondary tuning considerations.

Use the motherboard or system specifications to determine the supported speed. Enabling a memory profile beyond the platform’s validated settings can create instability, and any speed gain is workload-dependent. Stability during long renders is more valuable than a theoretical specification.

What is the practical buying decision?

Choose 64GB when you edit 4K or higher footage regularly, keep several applications open, use complex effects or compositing, or want headroom for projects that are growing in size. Stay at 32GB when your work is mostly straightforward HD or moderate 4K and your budget would solve a more limiting GPU, CPU, or storage problem. Consider 96GB or more for sustained 4K multicam, 6K–12K workflows, or unusually large compositions, provided the system supports it.

The right answer is therefore workload-based: 64GB is neither a universal requirement nor wasteful excess. It is a capacity buffer whose value appears when the project, effects, and multitasking load exceed what 32GB can comfortably hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will 64GB RAM improve export times in every video editor?

No. Export speed is often limited by the codec, CPU, GPU, storage, and the effects being rendered. Additional RAM helps when the export or surrounding workload is memory-constrained, but it does not guarantee a shorter export for a project that already fits in memory.

Can I edit 4K video smoothly with 32GB of RAM?

Yes, many 4K projects run well with 32GB, particularly with moderate timelines, optimized media, and limited multitasking. Adobe lists 32GB or more as its Premiere recommendation for 4K and higher, while workstation guidance may recommend more headroom for sustained professional workloads.

Is 64GB enough for DaVinci Resolve Fusion compositions?

It can be enough for moderate compositions, but complex Fusion scenes, high-resolution sources, and multiple applications may justify more. Puget’s Resolve guidance rises from 64GB at 1080p to 96GB at 4K and higher capacities for 6K, 8K, and 12K.

Does adding RAM fix dropped frames in Premiere Pro?

Only when memory pressure is the cause. Check memory use while reproducing the drop; codec decoding, GPU acceleration, storage throughput, and demanding effects can all produce the same symptom. Proxies, lower preview resolution, or effect optimization may help more than a RAM upgrade.
